Proposed by Professor Katsuya Nagata of Waseda University. E2-PA was co-developed by Professor Nagata and Environmental Management for Sustainability, inc. (EMSI) at the Inverse Manufacturing Forum (sponsored by Manufacturing Science and Technology Center). E2-PA can be used to evaluate products, services and society. Material Intensity, Energy Intensity, Hazardous Material Intensity, Recovery Intensity, and Duration Intensity are the factors that are taken into account within the evaluation using E2-PA. In addition, computer software is currently under development, commissioned by Japan Small and Medium Enterprise Corporation. In this research, E2-PA was used to quantitatively evaluate the environmental-consciousness of plastic bottles and electrical home appliances. The reduction of environmental load was compared between the appliances and then their environmental-consciousness improvements were evaluated.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123721694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A recycling system is not comprised only of its technology because direct and indirect effects of new technology depend on the economic system in which it functions. This study specifically addresses economic activity in product recycling. We elucidate it with economic experiments. Then we compare our experimental output with theoretical equilibrium by the recycling market model, which assumes that the producer, the waste dealer, and the dismantlers collect wastes. Consequently, we show that experimental results do not always support equilibrium. The results imply that social welfare can be steadily maintained to a high degree if the producer collects wastes.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122141726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many, if not most, of the interventions have been uni-directional, geared towards easing financial constraints by the promotion of credit and to upgrading technical skills through vocational schools. Until recently, little attention tended to be paid to product development and the environmental impact associated with MSEs production. More and more often, product development is being identified by different authors working with MSEs in various parts of the world as a key factor for their progress. The development of MSEs depends in great measure on the products they make. The greater competition in traditional markets is leading to a desperate need for product diversification. The introduction of eco-design has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of small enterprises and contribute to their development and sustainability. In the context of MSEs in developing countries, the concept of eco-design needs to incorporate the environmental, social and economic aspects of the design and production process. In these circumstances it can be defined as the process which creates product designs that are sustainable in terms of the environment and resource-use whilst considering the need for the product. It examines the intensity and optimisation of resource-use for product design, while involving local culture and tastes, and the overall production efficiency while simultaneously improving the product's quality to increase market opportunities. This paper analyses the way eco-design contributes to the development and economic and environmental sustainability of small enterprises and presents some products that were designed by Mexican artisans as a result of the eco-design training.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131279990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accuracy of sensors for monitoring and combinations of process activation rules are decided to achieve desired lifecycle, but those may bring unexpected behavior of a maintenance system and will affect the management of lifecycle. This paper describes a simulation-based approach for detecting undesired features of lifecycle to be used in maintenance system design. An improvised maintenance system for an elevator system is employed for explaining the approach. Though the model of functional structure of the elevator and degradation of conditions still contain unrealistic assumptions, simulation of behavior of a maintenance system seems to provide a good estimation of undesired lifecycle features.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131376629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, recycling and refurbishing of household appliances are ecologically and economically compared. The comparisons were conducted by using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and activity base costing (ABC), which are both reliable methods. The results from the analyses show that the refurbishment scenario is preferable from both economic and ecological standpoint. Refurbishment can also be used to a greater extent when the aim is to save nature or to decrease the economic losses that accrue from product defects. Having products refurbished in a central facility gives the manufacturer the opportunity to enhance knowledge about their product's performance throughout its entire life cycle.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126316989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The evaluation function is the total life cycle cost of the product and the scenario considered is product take-back for remanufacturing in leasing or selling conditions. Uncertainty in return of products is incorporated in the model for selling. The model further incorporates a repairing system that is available at low cost in most of the developing countries. In order to reflect the customer behavior towards remanufactured products, the demand for old and new products is considered separately. Simulation has been carried out based on the model and the behavior of the decision related to leasing or selling has been discussed. It has been found that with high demand of old products, common in developing countries, leasing becomes more cost effective than selling.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"168 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131826355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is important to measure citizens' objective \"Willingness to Pay (WTP)\" for removing barriers. It can be measured objectively through the adoption of the \"Contingent Valuation Method\" (CVM) in environmental economics. In addition to the typical method of using questionnaires, citizens have wanted \"group interview\", \"senior simulator\" and \"watching videos which make them understand the effectiveness of improvements\" in the process of judgment. We surveyed how these methods affect the objective \"Willingness to Pay\". From the survey, we found that including \"group interview\" and \"senior simulator\" in the process is more effective for recognizing more objective \"Willingness to Pay\".","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132291625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aitchison","doi":"10.1109/ECODIM.2003.1322629","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ECODIM.2003.1322629","url":null,"abstract":"The production and consumption of manufactured goods across regions and markets has reached a new level of complexity. At a time when products are designed in one region, manufactured in another, and then sold throughout the world, issues of environmental compliance and risk management have become critical design considerations. Product-oriented regulations are being implemented at a rapid rate with substantial implications for design. This significant challenges for those companies eager to maintain high levels of corporate responsibility and low levels of environmental risk and impact. Through productive collaboration with industry associations and specialist consultants, ESHconnect has successfully developed a suite of Web-based tools that inform and resource companies and their product developers. Our content and methodologies help ensure that EcoDesign becomes a robust business process that maximizes trouble-free market access. This necessarily demands an intimate knowledge of regulations that might impact on new products and their life cycle performance. Mindful of cultural factors, legislative complexity and differing time zones, our approach involves personnel based in multiple locations around the world coming together as virtual teams to build and deliver value-added knowledge covering EcoDesign, Product Stewardship, hazardous wastes, restricted substances, energy efficiency and environmental labelling. The paper describes the process and experiences of establishing a global EcoDesign compliance system, including the inherent socio-cultural factors which determine success or failure.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132775318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, chlorine ions cause damage such as corrosion. The author has developed a new type of snow-melting agent that needs a great deal less an amount of calcium chloride and has a larger snow-melting effect than calcium chloride. The agent is a snow-melting agent with a two-layer structure in which a heat storage material is coated with a snow-melting agent. Our two-layer snow-melting agent has a snow melting effect 1.3 times and sliding friction effect 1.5 times greater than the snow melting agents on the market by using a 20% coating. The agent reduces the damage caused by the chloride ions to one-fifth and so it is a snow-melting agent with a small environmental load.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"50 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113943513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
