The background is the large number of existing methods and tools in relation to the low utilization in the industry. The research method has been qualitative research interviews in ten companies. Some of the material is based on a Master Thesis written by Skoglund and Svensson (2002). The education level about DfE is very low and the overall motivation for DfE in the companies seems to be low or nonexistent. The DfE method and tool utilization is zero. One reason for this lack of interest seems to be the low interest in environmental questions and DfE among customers. The number of environmental and DfE requirements are low. The authors noted that environmental improvements have been made but not considered as environmental work, e.g. weight and fuel minimization but they are driven by for example quality or economical reasons. There are two ways to get environmental improvements by using methods and tools, by specific DfE methods and tools and by integration of environmental considerations in the ordinary design methods and tools.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124186269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since there are various uncertainties about the lifetime of durables, the environmental effects from demolished durables are to be evaluated by considering probability distributions. In this research, to consider the uncertainty of waste generation from discarded durables depending on not only physical factors but economical factors, we try to estimate the failure distribution function of the buildings in consideration of the economic factor. By using estimated failure distribution function of the buildings, we evaluate two scenarios. The first scenario is concerned about effects of recovery of waste material. In second scenario, extension of usage life of building is considered.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121586368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the additional consumption causes environmental impacts. In this study, we propose a method to evaluate direct and indirect environmental impacts which are effected by the technology development by using the input and output table. The technology development is described as change of input coefficient of the IO table, and changes in emission of CO/sub 2/, NOx, SOx and SPM and the quantity of final disposal are calculated as the spillover effect. Under a scenario where the automobile sector replaced the steel materials used in car bodies or parts with light nonferrous metal and carbon fiber materials, environmental impacts are estimated. As a result, it is found that the technology development in the scenario makes CO/sub 2/ emission decrease but emission of other air pollutants and the quantity of final disposal increase.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126452499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, an estimation of the potential resources accumulated in the building stock is implemented and the result shows that huge potential recourses are accumulated. Compared with the demand in general use of those materials, the importance of creating new possible demands emerges, such as recycled aggregate for concrete and biomass-use for wooden materials. Secondly, a management system for the re-use of building materials is proposed and the procedural elements as well as the potential developments in the future are discussed.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131385692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recycling processes can realise high recovery when material content and liberation of materials are optimal. However, product designers do not take into account these requirements from the recycling process. This paper describes an approach to help product designers to optimise their product designs for optimal recyclability. The product designer does not have to be a recycling expert, but he has to learn to look at a product from a material and connection view. Connections between materials play a very important role in optimising recyclability. Not only the recyclability of products can be improved by optimising connections, recycling processes also can be simplified if the design of a product and more specific of the product structure and connections are adjusted to recycling processes.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132177736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is expected that the addition of some solidification nuclei for Sn-Ag-Cu solder can refine the solidification microstructure and suppress undercooling. In this study, the effects of the fourth elements, i.e., Ni and Co, on microstructural features of Sn-3 wt%Ag-0.5 wt%Cu lead-free solder and Cu joints were investigated. The interfacial phases of Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu/Cu joints are typical Cu/sub 6/Sn/sub 5/ scallops. Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu (-0.1 wt%X; X=Ni and Co)/Cu joints form very fine Sn-Cu-Ni and Sn-Cu-Co scallops at the interface. The growth kinetics of total ternary compound layers was examined. The apparent activation energies of Sn-Cu-Ni and Sn-Cu-Co layers were 64 and 112 kJ/mol, respectively. The useful effects of preventing solidification defect and improving solder structure are obtained by the addition of Ni and Co.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"189 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124182585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analysis on the potential of Eco-materials, from the "design" perspective 从“设计”的角度分析生态材料的潜力

One of the most important criteria is the external design quality, because the evaluation and the final selection of a product's exterior (outer-most) material is frequently determined by a designer. When an Eco-material is employed to substitute the existing conventional material for a product, the substitute's physical property should not be significantly lower than the existing one. The evaluation of such measures can be done quantitatively. On the other hand, an Eco-material's \"design\" evaluation is very difficult with quantitative measures, because the aesthetic effectiveness of a material is particularly difficult to judge numerically and logically. Rather, its evaluation is done sensuously. In order to evaluate Eco-material qualitatively, an Eco-material evaluation diagram was developed. This diagram can be utilized to analyze and evaluate a material from the design and environmental perspectives. From the evaluation of several Eco-materials by the diagram, it was found that the most important \"design\" criteria for a preferable Eco-material is the uniqueness and distinctiveness of the material's texture. As a future task, a further modification of the diagram can be made so that the diagram can be used as a practical \"tool\" for evaluating materials.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122038998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
