The data collected was an open question questionnaire distributed through a Google form. The result shows most of the alumni of Senior High School argued the class atmosphere was incapable of motivating students to take part. They found the class holding with monotones, traditional settings, and unclear explanations. This condition led them to off mode. Also, an opportunity to practice orally was less because they were just asked to work on the worksheet. An interactive interaction between teachers and students and among students can be found in group discussion. An appropriate language used in explaining allows the students to grab the material better. Providing students opportunities to practice orally and individually makes potential progress. The critical point is learners crave fun and helpful teacher. These responses indicated that a teaching mechanism and the educator's personality would create a conducive learning atmosphere.","PeriodicalId":217459,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Sriwijaya University Learning and Education International Conference (SULE-IC 2020)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121888281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Subjects of the research were cadets of nautical technology study program of Inland Water and Ferries Transport Polytechnic of Palembang. The method used was design research with three stages, those are preparing for the experiment, the design experiments, and the retrospective analysis. Data colection conducted through video recordings and photos to see the learning process in the classroom, written tests, observation and interviews during the learning process with the students. At the informal stage, contextual problems will be used as a starting point for learning to explore students' knowledge. The results showed that the use of problem solving approach in trigonometric learning can help the cadets in understanding about how to solve trigonometric contextual problem systematically.","PeriodicalId":217459,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Sriwijaya University Learning and Education International Conference (SULE-IC 2020)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117097869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Needs assessment is carried out by giving questionnaires to college students so that they can collect information related to their responses to virtual lab implementation on environmental pollution material as an alternative to the real practicum activities in the field. This research is conducted in August 2020 in the biology education program of The Faculty of Teacher and Training Education, Sriwijaya University. The correspondences of this research are 76 college students of the fifth semester. The result of need assessment based on the questionnaire showed that 81.58% of students thought that it was necessary to create a virtual lab as an alternative to practicum activities. 89.48% of students agree that water pollution material can be one of the materials that can be made in the form of a virtual lab. 90.79% of students thought that practicum activities in the virtual lab could be made in the form of games accompanied by pictures to better understanding the topics that are being practiced. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that the development of virtual laboratory applications can be an alternative to help improve concept mastery and overcome the limitations of laboratory facilities.","PeriodicalId":217459,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Sriwijaya University Learning and Education International Conference (SULE-IC 2020)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117104985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
