Up to 2017 there was a slow but steady growth in both quantity and quality of the researches on the Russian history. On the occasion of the year 2017, the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, there was a drastic increase in the research achievements on the Russian history. The early 2020s saw that such a trend didn’t break and its momentum was maintained. 243 pieces of work were produced for the past two years. The remarkable researches were produced in the spheres such as political history, social history, economic history, intellectual history, and art history. In contrast, however, little was produced in some spheres, especially gender history. Further study should be stimulated in those areas in which inertia was observed. Overall, the prospects are far from being bleak, considering the advent of the younger generation of those researchers who delve into the various fresh topics on the Russian history. In the meantime, it is high time to contemplate an important problem concerning the identity of the “Russian” history study. It has been conventional that the studies in the Ukraine history has regarded as a part of the Russian history study. Such a classification will be problematic, given that Ukraine is a sovereign independent state. Some solutions should be groped for anew. A labelling of the “study of East Slavic history” can be a solution to the problem.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135085294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As interests in inter- and multidisciplinary research have recently increased, there has been a tendency to actively digest research outcome in other disciplines such as archaeology, classical philology, and religious studies and to apply it critically to discussions in ancient western history. In the midst of the COVID-19 era, the impact of infectious diseases on ancient society was explored from more diverse perspectives. Topics such as the relation between healing and religion, public power and its role in the face of catastrophes, and ways to represent and commemorate wars and plagues drew a particular attention. It is also noted that the quantity of research output has increased despite the pandemic situation, and that the efforts to reach out more diverse readership have been made. Still, further efforts may be called for to create a common ground for more extended communication and collaboration among researchers with a long-term perspective to enhance a research capacity and academic solidarity within ancient western history and beyond.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135085300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We can find two major trends that are noticeable in this academic period. The first is the emergence of new generation of researchers, and the second is the increase in research in Italian and medical histories. As new researchers who completed their doctoral degrees in Italy participated in domestic academic activities, research on Italian history has increased. The increase in medical history seems to be related to the impact of Covid - 19.BR This article tries to comment on topics such as politics and war, culture, society, economy and exchange, and religion. Some encouraging trends that can be found in the research achievement of 2021 and 2022 include an “increase in new researchers”, “expanding research horizons into new topics such as medical history and women’s history”, and an “increased balance of research topics”.BR On the other hand, this article finds that the tendency toward articleoriented research is a structural factor that prevents academic researchers from having communication with the public. This lack of communication is one cause of crisis in the human sciences including history. Another problem is the absence of a book talk culture. This article therefore suggests that it will be necessary to activate academic debates among researchers through book reviews and book talks, and to share research achievements with the public.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135085296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, scholars in various domains emphasize the intensification of collaborative research, reevaluation of hypothetical and traditional research paradigms, and the promotion of structural history. Simultaneously, there is a discernible trend towards individualized research pursuits. Secondly, the quantitative growth in research output has led to the diversification of research methodologies. However, it is worth reiterating that the mere increase in quantity has not invariably resulted in an enhancement of research quality. An enduring concern is the challenge faced by emerging researchers in establishing and expanding their unique research domains, exacerbated by limitations in accessing new source materials and research topics. To address this predicament, there is a pressing call to explore novel research avenues, revisit foundational scholarship, and develop innovative methodological approaches. Thirdly, the papers highlight the aspiration for collaborative and collective research endeavors that envisage a ‘chemical synergy,’ fostering the emergence of diverse research domains with the aim of forging a novel historical paradigm in the 21st century.BR Despite the ongoing earnest endeavors of Korean historians, the hope remains for historical research communities in Korea that prioritizes empirical and profound analyses over mechanistic, superficial, and fragmented pursuits.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135085299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This growth has been driven by various attempts to shape the perspective of viewing artworks and to develop new methodologies for research. Generally, there are four primary research methodologies, with a significant emphasis still placed on visual interpretation through the analysis of style and iconography. The number of articles exploring the social context of art production or the perception of specific periods has also increased. Additionally, discussions based on the approaches of material culture studies and visual culture studies have also been included.BR In this context, this paper pays attention to reflective considerations on the framework of art historical perception and research from new perspectives that go beyond traditional visual analysis. Furthermore, this paper focuses on research into new subjects that were previously less explored, such as the representation of women in art. These achievements have been driven by a shared awareness within our academic community of the need to explore new perspectives and research directions. It is expected that through these new perspectives and methodologies, which open up new possibilities for interpreting artworks, the qualitative growth of Asian art history will continue to thrive in the future.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135086178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the meantime, Italian history studies have grown steadily, forming a relatively stable academic community, albeit on a small scale. Based on this, studies over the past two years have maintained the same quantitative and qualitative level as the previous period. However, they leave much to be desired, in that, while there are many achievements regarding the Renaissance and early modern age, the achievements on the 20th century decrease, and there are no achievements on the Risorgimento and liberal Italy in a given period. Also, the weakness of political, social and economic history stands out, when compared to the strength of intellectual and cultural history. In this respect, it seems more important than anything else to pursue the balance in Italian history studies. Furthermore, this review suggests that it is necessary to expand the research themes, the problematic and research horizons, and it is important to apply a comparative perspective as a method for such an expansion. In the long run, it is expected that Italian history studies in Korea will move forward slowly, but with motion as before.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135084996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially, the fact that journal publications written in English both by Korean and non-Korean researchers were published in Korean academic journals, along with increase in numbers of submission of overseas academic journals show the possibility of research exchange and expansion. Secondly, the scope has expanded to the issues of production subject, patron, production process, and collection. Universal boundaries of the academic subjects were challenged, pursuing socio-cultural analysis, and the presence of masters, such as monk artists, monk sculptors, and craftsmen of embroidery and handicraft, had emerged. Finally, the change in the topography of research should be noted. Overall, resources such as database (ancient books, ancient manuscripts, Uigwe , newspapers, gelatin dry plate) and e-museum , provided by national and public museums of Korea, were the bases how our academia could result in such remarkable outcome despite the era of Covid-19 pandemic. Now, archiving will be leading the direction of future researches in Korean Art; attention and cooperation from researchers in establishment and sorting of database materials is necessary.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135086173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such an age of crisis as Anthropocene, some argued that we should break away from human-centered thinking and look at history from a longer-term perspective. Along with that, attempts were made to look at nationalism from a transnational perspective and to rethink the problem of memory, history, and the specific space where they meet. Developments have also been made in the field of traditional history of thought. Overall, increases in Western historians’ interest in education and their continued expansion of research into the field of Korean history deserve a positive evaluation.
