The demarcation between the two remains blurred, given the underlying premise that “expansion” is often interwoven with, and in some instances predicated upon, the foundational elements of “continuity”. For the sake of analytical expediency, though, this article situates within the “continuity” category an array of subject matters encompassing the trajectory of unification and European integration, history education and public history, memory studies, the Korean-German entanglements, migration narratives, and also the research on the medieval and Early modern German history. These thematic arenas have continually emerged as salient focal points in German historical research over the preceding decade. Within this “continuity” category, the prism of memory studies conspicuously stands out.BR On the other side of this scholarly spectrum, the “expansion” envelopes geographical, climatic, and environmental dynamics, urban historical trajectories, the burgeoning realm of digital historiography, and the historical exploration of emotion.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135085301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of prominent trends for this period is not only a geographical expansion of research objects, but also a methodological turn in the field of french history. Since several years, noneuropean dimension of French history has been paid attention by many korean historians who were interested in colonial questions. The Mainland France, so called “Hexagon”, is no longer alone geographical research object of French history written in Korea. The region where the legacies of colonialism are controversially treated, such as North Africa, Indochina, and French possessions of Caribbean islands, becomes the main issue and finally, the “Hexagon” is more and more regarded as part of the trans-atlantic network and of the mediterraniean socio-economic system. In this way, the Transnational perspective gains its place in the Korean historiography of French history.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135084997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis focuses on master’s theses, dissertations, papers in art history-related academic journals and conferences. Modern art continued to dominate with a 26:78 ratio compared to pre-modern art. Although classical, medieval, and early modern art had fewer scholars and papers, an influx of pre-modern era scholars over the past decade has increased research activity. Recent trends move away from traditional enumeration of art historical findings to embrace interdisciplinary studies.BR Increased awareness of climate change, the pandemic’s impact, and global environmental issues has led to reflection on anthropocentric thinking and the emergence of ‘anthropocene’ discourse in Western modern art studies. Advancements in digital technology, cyborgs, AI, and the metaverse are influencing Western modern art research. Korean modern art research is integrating Western art history methodologies, notably through collaborative symposia in 2021-2022.BR Historically, there has been a self-deprecating view that downplays the role of Western art history in Korea as only for “internal consumption.” This dichotomy between west/center and east/periphery is detrimental to the future development of Western art history in non-Western countries. We hope this ‘retrospective and forward-looking’ provides perspective.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135086184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the process of reviewing the research achievements by field, we summarized the following characteristics.BR First, studies that reconsider or criticize major concepts, that have been viewed through the lens of internal development theory, have been published. Second, as the international community’s interest in climate crises and disasters has recently increased, papers on epidemics, fuel consumption, and animal ecology have also been published in late Joseon studies. Third, many papers on the history of ideas and culture were published between 2021 and 2022 due to the excavation of literature and artifacts and the revitalization of research in adjacent fields.BR Even if the somewhat sporadic individual studies do not paint a coherent picture of the late Joseon Dynasty, if individual case studies would be solidly accumulated, it will be an important nourishment for the structural understanding of Joseon society. However, long-term efforts should be made to create an academic forum for sharing the problems and arguments of the vast amount of empirical research that pours out every year, and also try to create a healthy academic ecosystem that considers the next generation.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135084998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was recognized that the annual quantitative flow of articles on ‘Korean ancient history’ peaked in 2018 and has entered a downward or plateauing period. It seems to have slightly shrunk compared to the number of articles on ‘Korean history’ and history as a whole showing a recovery in quantitative growth during the same period. However, considering expected decline in the inflow of new researchers due to the decrease in population, it is difficult to deny that we are all standing at or moving towards the end of the Growth Era.BR The decentralization of research topics has been criticized consistently, but diversification is an irreversible trend. Expecting researchers to become part of a large theoretical framework or great discourse again seems to be a hope of the past Growth Era. Instead, researchers may naturally gather around the materials or themes that their own pursuing leads to. It goes without saying that joint research will be more important, but simply putting each arguments together is not enough. It is necessary to increase the results from ‘chemical bonding’ among researchers.","PeriodicalId":215841,"journal":{"name":"The Korean Historical Review","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135085001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is also important to note that new fields like medical history and environmental history have been established. As the traditional research fields also are embracing these new themes, the boundaries separating the fields have become unstable.BR This expansion is taking place not only in terms of subject matter but also in terms of methodology. In addition, intersectionality, a theory on the understanding of interacting multiple social and cultural structures is spreading into diverse fields.BR However, the American historical community, which has continued to develop by accumulating various kinds of researches, is still facing challenges.
