Abstract

It is notable from the survey of research topics and trends in ancient western history from 2021 to 2022 that a considerable number of papers had their focuses on examining the process of cultural exchanges across time andspace and their impact and consequences. As interests in inter- and multidisciplinary research have recently increased, there has been a tendency to actively digest research outcome in other disciplines such as archaeology, classical philology, and religious studies and to apply it critically to discussions in ancient western history. In the midst of the COVID-19 era, the impact of infectious diseases on ancient society was explored from more diverse perspectives. Topics such as the relation between healing and religion, public power and its role in the face of catastrophes, and ways to represent and commemorate wars and plagues drew a particular attention. It is also noted that the quantity of research output has increased despite the pandemic situation, and that the efforts to reach out more diverse readership have been made. Still, further efforts may be called for to create a common ground for more extended communication and collaboration among researchers with a long-term perspective to enhance a research capacity and academic solidarity within ancient western history and beyond.
