Numerous factors, such as mechanical, enzymatic, and biological, are responsible for the development of this complex, multifactorial disease. The connection between inflammation and the development of knee OA is being investigated more and more. Cytokines are thought to be one of the main causes of disturbances in normal cartilage metabolism. This study, designed as a prospective cohort study included 60 patients with knee OA. The examinees were recruited from total population of patients with knee OA, hospitalized or treated as outpatients at Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University Clinical Centre Kragujevac. After the consent was obtained, anamnestic data were collected, blood samples were taken and functional testing was done together with anthropometric measurements. The values of the following cytokines were determined from a blood sample: IL-6, TNF-α, IL-10, IL-17. The average age of patients was 69.10±9.06 years, most of whom were females (78,3%). Both IL-6 and TNF-α correlated positively with WOMAC scores. WOMAC index subscales showed different association with cytokines. In our studies the level of cytocines in the serum of pacients with OA knee is show not correlation with radiographic image. The present study demonstrated than the concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α IL-6) can be correlated with WOMAC scores of knee OA patients. The results indicate that concentrations of TNF-α and IL-6 may affect knee joint function in patients with knee OA.","PeriodicalId":21582,"journal":{"name":"Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research","volume":"42 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41288226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the quality of life is often impaired in patients with stoma. The goal of this study is to determine the quality of life of patients with stoma and cancer, and the relationship between the quality of life and characteristics of these patients. The study was conducted from 2018 to 2020 and included a total of 64 patients of both sexes with colorectal cancer and temporary or permanent stoma. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer with Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQC29-30) and the anonymous WHO Quality of Life Questionnaire SF-36 were used for self-assessment of quality of life. Our study included 39 (61.0%) men and 25 (39.0%) women. 24 patients (37.5%) had colostomy, 14 patients (21.9%) had ileostomy, and 26 patients (40.6%) underwent surgery for resection of colorectal cancer without stoma. A significant number of women were in the group of patients with a permanent stoma (p = 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference in the assessment of general health (p = 0.680) and quality of life (p = 0.721) during the past month in relation to gender. Patients without a stoma rated their general health better compared to those with stoma and the difference reached statistical significance (p = 0.035). There was no statistically significant difference in the assessment of quality of life between the group of patients with stoma and without stoma, as well as between the patients of different age groups. For tumor induction, 1×106 CT26 cells suspended in 100 μl of DMEM were injected subcutaneously into flank of male BALB/c mice. Treatment groups were as follows: Ru-1, Ru-2, oxaliplatin and control (saline). The intraperitoneal administration of the tested complexes began on 6th day after CT26 cells inoculation. Each complex was administered at dose of 5 mg/kg, twice weekly, four doses in total. To assess toxicity, serum values of urea, creatinine, AST and ALT were determined and histopathological analysis of organs and tumor were performed. In order to assess the effects of Ru(II) complexes on markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant defense system, we determined the TBARS, GSH, SOD and CAT in the homogenate of tumor, heart, liver, lungs and kidney tissues. The findings indicate that Ru-1 and Ru-2 exerts equal or better antitumor activity in comparison with oxaliplatin, but with pronounced toxic effects such as reduced survival rate, cardiotoxicity, nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity. The increased index of lipid peroxidation in the tissues of the kidneys and heart, but decreased in tumor tissue, after Ru(II) complexes administration, indicates the importance of the induction of oxidative stress as a possible mechanism of nephrotoxicity and cardiotoxicity, but not the mechanism by which they realize antitumor activity. Additional studies are needed to elucidate the mechanism of antitumor activity and toxicity of the Ru(II) complexes.","PeriodicalId":21582,"journal":{"name":"Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41973670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research is designed as a cross-sectional study. A questionnaire created using the Google Docs platform was used as an instrument. The sample consisted of 89 respondents of both sexes, aged 18 to 23 years. The analysis shows that there is a difference in maintaining hygienic habits before and after the introduction of the state of emergency. In 20.22% of cases, hygienic habits were better during the state of emergency, and after the mitigation of measures, compared to the period before the introduction of the state of emergency, and in 5.62% of respondents hygienic habits were worse, while in 74.16% of respondents there were no change in hygienic habits. The analysis of the use of disinfectants and masks shows that 60.68% of respondents used disinfectants and masks more often after mitigation of emergency measures compared to the period before the introduction of the state of emergency, 5.62% of respondents used less, while in 33.70 % of respondents there were no changes in the use of disinfectants and masks. The results of this study show a positive relationship between hygiene habits before and during the Covid 19 pandemic, and after mitigation, as well as between the use of disinfectants and masks before and during the Covid 19 pandemic, and after mitigation, which justifies further research in this area.","PeriodicalId":21582,"journal":{"name":"Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49401578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We report a rare case of male fullterm newborn who soon after birth presented with respiratory distress. Chest radiograph showed spontaneous bilateral pneumothorax after which a chest drain was placed between anterior and midaxillary line in the 5th right intercostal space. The infant soon presented with tachypnea, dyspnea, muffled heart sounds, acidosis indicating cardiorespiratory worsening. On chest radiograph ‘’Halo” sign appeared indicating pneumopericardium. We believe that spontaneous reposition of a chest drain damaged the pericardial sac which combined with ventilation mechanism (‘’Macklin effect”) most likely led to pneumopericardium. After partial chest drain extraction the infant showed signs of improvement, but had to be closely monitored due to risk of tension pneumopericardium. Careful thoracal drain placement and fixation is crucial to prevent iatrogenic pneumopericardium, which can lead to deadly tension pneumopericardium.","PeriodicalId":21582,"journal":{"name":"Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43118026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gastrointestinal symptoms are predominant including pathological manifestations in the oral cavity, as well as extra-intestinal complications. Lingua plicata (LP) is a condition characterized by an increased number of fissures and grooves at the central and lateral aspects of the dorsal surface of the tongue. LP is usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally, but the accumulation of food in the fissures and grooves can lead to focal glossitis and halitosis. In this study, we analyzed the level of proinflammatory cytokines in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and demonstrated that proinflammatory cytokines IFN-γ, IL-12, and IL-1β were significantly increased in the group of UC patients when compared with healthy controls. Obtained results have shown that 35% of UC patients have lingua plicata. The GCF levels of IFN-γ and IL-12 were higher in UC patients with LP compared with UC patients without lingua plicata. In conclusion, increased GCF values of IFN-γ and IL-12, in UC patients with LP may be considered as a sign of the disease progression and, consequently, of a poor prognosis for patients.","PeriodicalId":21582,"journal":{"name":"Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42645473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Depending on whether the animals received only saline or PFT in different doses (8, 12, 16 ml/kg body weight), and time (1, 10, or 20 hours before sacrificing and blood sampling), all animals were divided into control or experimental groups. From plasma samples we measured following biomarkers of oxidative stress: superoxide anion radical (O2−), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitrites (NO2−), index of lipid peroxidation measured as TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances), and from hemolysate samples activity of the next enzymes: catalase (CAT), superoxidedismutase (SOD) and reduced glutathione (GSH). All mentioned biochemical parameters of oxidative stress were determined spectrophotometrically (Shimadzu UV-1800UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Japan). Superoxide anion radical was a molecule very affected with the PFT administration. we observed the significantly higher activity of superoxide dismutase in all PFT treated groups in comparison with the CTRL group. The highest activity was observed in group treated with the 8 and 12 ml/kg of PFT nearly to sampling (1 hour). Catalase activity was significantly higher in PFT group in comparison with the CTRL, especially in PFT 16ml/kg group (1 hour). In comparison with the CTRL group, the total content of GSH was significantly lower in the groups treated PFT in dose of 16 ml/kg 1 hour and 10 hours before blood sampling. All these changes in oxidative stress markers seems to be very clear, but we can observe that almost all changes are induced in 1 hour after PFT administration. Probably, PFT solution has short-term protective effects on reducing oxidative stress, but no long term-effects. Maybe the chemical and biological instability of PFT solution could be a reason for that transient antioxidative effects, and developing the nano-formulation of PFT could be potential option for resolving the problem with poor pharmacodynamic of PFT.","PeriodicalId":21582,"journal":{"name":"Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research","volume":"63 4","pages":"209 - 216"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41258348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Metformin, the first-line therapeutic agent for type 2 diabetes mellitus, has vascular protective properties, beyond its glucose lowering effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the interaction between metformin and angiotensin 2 in human internal mammary arteries harvested from patients with coronary heart disease undergoing revascularization procedure, by evaluation of vascular function, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the gene expression of nitric oxide (NO) synthases (endothelial – eNOS, neuronal – nNOS and inducible – iNOS). To this aim, vascular samples were incubated with angiotensin 2 (Ang2, 12 h) with/without metformin (Metf, 10 μM) and used for ROS measurement (FOX assay), vascular reactivity in organ bath (contractility to phenylephrine, relaxation to acetylcholine, contractility to NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester/L-NAME) and RTPCT studies. Acute incubation of the vascular rings with Ang2 impaired vascular reactivity (increase contractility, decrease relaxation), increased ROS production, supressed eNOS/nNOS and increased iNOS mRNA expression. Ex vivo incubation with metformin at a clinically relevant concentration reversed all these effects. These data suggest that Metformin might be useful in alleviating endothelial dysfunction by improving the endothelial-dependent relaxation and mitigating oxidative stress in clinical setting associated with cardiovascular disease regardless the presence of impaired glucose metabolism.","PeriodicalId":21582,"journal":{"name":"Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research","volume":"23 1","pages":"201 - 207"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46013349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A wealth of data shows that regular physical exercise is necessary to prevent cardiovascular diseases. In the last few years, a number of new training regimes, usually modified variations of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) protocols, have been rising in popularity among people of all ages. Since exercising is not limited to only healthy people, our study emphasized the benefits of HIIT and MICT in preventing or mitigating cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury. Different kinds of research are being performed, studying the various positive and side effects of these training regimes, all in hopes of finding the most optimal ones. So far, all of them have shown that exercising to any extent, even for a short period of time, is beneficial in one way or another, and outweighs the possible risks it might have. We also revisited some of the known molecular mechanisms responsible for many of the effects of physical exercise and introduced some new findings related to them. Lastly, we summarized and compared the benefits of different HIIT and MICT protocols to narrow down the search for the most efficient training method.","PeriodicalId":21582,"journal":{"name":"Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43912872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
