Thus, this innovation study was conducted to describe Malaysian health sciences students' experiences while participating in the simulation activity, as well as to learn about its usefulness in increasing student learning experiences. Following a classroom lecture on the topic of Malay Cuisine, a kenduri (feast) simulation involving ten traditional Malay table manners was conducted as part of in-class activity. An online survey was used to obtain feedback from 90 undergraduate students (Nutrition, n=43, Dietetics, n=19 and Optometry, n=28), who enrolled in the course Multiethnic Cuisine & Etiquette as elective credits. Overall, students responded very positively to this learning activity. The results demonstrate that through peer-to-peer learning, this in-class simulation has enabled the majority of students to increase their knowledge (95.56%), understanding (97.78%), and interest (92.22%) in Malay food and table manners. This learning method has made both Malay (n=56, 62%) and non-Malay (n=34, 38%) students more appreciative of Malay culture. The findings show that in-class simulation is a useful and effective method for learning about Malay food and table manners resulting in a better learning experience.","PeriodicalId":214089,"journal":{"name":"Asean Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133165724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aspek ejaan diberikan penekanan kerana masih terdapat banyak kesalahan ejaan berlaku seperti dilaporkan dalam kajian lepas, khususnya dalam kalangan pelajar pengajian tinggi. Oleh itu, kajian ini bertujuan untuk membangunkan aplikasi gamifikasi berasaskan ejaan bahasa Melayu bagi mengatasi masalah yang berlaku. Seramai 25 orang pelajar prasiswazah dipilih secara rawak untuk menjawab soal selidik dan praujian bagi melihat pandangan pelajar terhadap penggunaan gajet dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran (PdP) tahap permasalahan ejaan yang berlaku. Eja²BM adalah kesinambungan daripada pembangunan kit video Rakan Bahasa (F.1896) dan aplikasi mudah alih RakanBM (UKM.IKB.800-4/1/3954) yang telah dibangunkan sebelumnya. Pembangunan Eja²BM menerapkan reka bentuk dan pembangunan model ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation & Evaluation) yang diperkenalkan oleh Rosset (1987), dengan menggabungjalinkan elemen budaya, iaitu rumah tradisional Melayu Terengganu sebagai penceritaan gamifikasi, menerapkan ejaan kata dasar/kata tunggal yang lazim salah, dan pelbagai elemen didik hibur, seperti animasi, muzik, dan permainan kuiz mengikut tahap yang ditetapkan, serta kerangka MDA (Mechanics, Dynamics & Aesthetic) sebagai acuan reka bentuk pembikinan gamifikasi dalam gajet. Laporan kajian terdahulu mencatatkan bahawa bahan digital dapat mempengaruhi tingkah laku pelajar dalam proses PdP agar menjadi lebih interaktif, menyeronokkan dan mengujakan, serta mencetuskan motivasi yang lebih tinggi kepada pemain untuk terus mencuba. Sekiranya pendekatan gamifikasi diaplikasikan secara positif oleh pendidik dan pelajar, diharapkan permasalahan dalam PdP bahasa Melayu lebih mudah diatasi, sekali gus dapat memartabatkan bahasa Melayu.","PeriodicalId":214089,"journal":{"name":"Asean Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121604239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various initiatives were made to improve the experience of online classes. The use of online tools such as Padlet and Kahoot helped in generating interactive sessions and communication between lecturers and students. Some students adapted well to online classes, and some found it less interesting and difficult to follow. Engineering courses require strong understanding of concepts and mathematical calculations. Since the transition to the endemic phases, universities have gradually begun shifting back from online to face-to-face classes. However, online classes has its own advantages, and may be still be conducted in certain cases. Therefore, the aim of this research is to understand students' perception and comparison on the effectiveness of online and face-to-face classes for engineering courses. A survey was conducted among engineering courses from five universities in Malaysia. A total of 255 engineering students participated in the survey. Kebanyakan model penentuan gaya pembelajaran yang dibangunkan menggunakan kaedah soal-selidik dan tinjauan yang memerlukan pelajar menjawab soalan yang banyak. Kaedah konvesional ini mempunyai beberapa kelemahan seperti memerlukan masa yang panjang, soal-selidik yang dijawab secara sambil-lewa, kualiti soal-selidik yang rendah serta cara setiap pelajar menginterprestasi soalan yang diberikan. Dengan perkembangan teknologi e-pembelajaran masa kini seperti sistem pengurusan pembelajaran digital (SPP), rekod mentah aktiviti dan interaksi pelajar dengan sistem pembelajaran dapat disimpan secara dalam talian. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji hubungkait aktiviti pelajar dalam sesuatu SPP dalam menentukan gaya pembelajaran mereka. Berdasarkan teori gaya pembelajaran Felder-Silverman, satu model kepintaran buatan telah dibangunkan bagi menentukan dimensi-dimensi gaya pembelajaran secara automatik dengan menggunakan rekod aktiviti pelajar dalam SPP. Model kepintaran buatan dibina berasaskan algoritma rangkaian neural dan teknik pembelajaran mesin terselia. Model rangkaian neural ini telah dilatih menggunakan rekod kekerapan seseorang pelajar itu melawati kandungan-kandungan pembelajaran seperti nota kuliah, video pembelajaran, slaid pengajaran dan latihan dalam talian. Hasil daripada pembelajaran mesin ini, empat model rangkaian neural telah terhasil yang mana setiap satu model mewakili dimensi-dimensi dalam gaya pembelajaran Felder-Silverman iaitu dimensi aktif/reflektif, kepekaan/intuitif, visual/lisan dan berurutan/global. Two important elements of active learning are student activity and student engagement. The objective of this paper is to establish the effectiveness of an Active Learning framework based on multiple approaches to increase student engagement. This research utilizes three techniques that were blended together to optimize the effect of the three important elements of active learning, which are Bring Your Own Device Learning (BYODL), Project Based Learning (PPBL) and Gamification Learning (GL). At the start of the PPBL active learning process, students were grouped in five to six team members and each group was given a specific project to be submitted towards the end of the semester. All assignments were uploaded in the I-Folio system for easy references. For the purpose of continuous BYODL and GL learning, students were given online attendance with QR code scan and questions from previous lessons via Google form at the beginning of each lesson to promote active learning. During the lesson, students were given short quizzes via Kahoot application and PBL question with snapshot answers via Google form and I-Folio assignment system. The results show that these techniques were found to be effective in increasing students’ engagement and involvement in active learning. In conclusion, the framework that blends three approaches together has effectively optimized active learning with more than 90% students’ engagement rate and have proven to be constructive to boost students’ engagement and involvement in active learning.","PeriodicalId":214089,"journal":{"name":"Asean Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130677841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the similar number of credit hours allocated for first degree dietetics students, conventional method of teaching would not be sufficient in preparing them for endless opportunity of working world. Hence, active learning is a timely approach in addressing this issue. The objective of this paper is to introduce a newly created program (DietitianJr@UKMTM) that applied active learning in equipping dietetics first degree students with skills that may be useful for the unconventional future jobs. DietitianJr@UKMTM is an annual program created in fulfilling Patient Education course outcome that involves community. Dietetics students were divided into four groups that introduced them to four main working areas of a Dietitian, i.e. inpatient, outpatient, food service and community service. Several stages were involved starting with lectures and case study discussions on basic concept and protocol of creating patient education material, followed by a need’s assessment survey, creating educational tools and a minimum of four discussion sessions with supervisors. This program was conducted among primary school children (aged 8-11 years) with the objective of introducing healthy eating concept and dietitian career. Results shows a highly positive feedback from the participants for each of the three-year school-holiday program. It is hoped that this fun-learning program will not only provide experience to dietetic students through authentic learning, but also educating the community on healthy eating and the importance role of dietitians.","PeriodicalId":214089,"journal":{"name":"Asean Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116369713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a novel teaching and learning approach being implemented at Malaysian higher education institutions (HEIs), as a transformation initiative to improve the quality of education and to produce graduates who could meet the demands of the 21st century workforce. However, the extend of heutagogy principles being adopted and the challenges faced whilst implementing this new approach remains unclear. This study aims to fill in the knowledge gaps by conducting critical systematic reviews on the practices and challenges of heutagogy approach in teaching and learning at Malaysian HEIs. Research articles and policy papers on the practices of heutagogy approach in Malaysian higher education context were accessed through open-source and subscription databases. The results of systematic reviews found that four principles of heutagogy approach namely learner-centred, double loop learning, non-linear learning approach and a focus on skills development were being practiced at the local institutions. Nevertheless, the study also discovered several challenges, including lecturer, student, and environmental factors, that hinder the implementation of this new teaching and learning approach. The implications of the research findings were discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":214089,"journal":{"name":"Asean Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116875923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
