The objective of this review was to collect updated scientific information on the importance of the presence of flavonoids in bovine milk, regarding their nutritional value and the benefits of these metabolites for the milk and its consumers. Milk decomposition is due to the effect of light, temperature and time on the fat and protein present in it, as well as to lactic fermentation by bacteria. Thus, the control of these three factors or one of them contributes to extend the useful life of milk and other dairy products. Thus, by seeking to delay the rancidification of milk and its by-products, it has been proposed that forage containing antioxidants such as flavonoids should be included in the diet of female cattle, as these, being bioavailable in cattle, also actively appear in the milk in concentrations equivalent to plasma. Additionally, the presence of flavonoids in bovine milk can provide a source of natural antioxidants for the consumer, which is beneficial for the prevention of some pathological processes mediated by free radicals.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"14 1","pages":"137-150"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78147462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stomachs of 137 donkeys (73 intact males, 16 castrated males, and 48 females), aged between 1 to 25 years, were examined, characterized and photographed post mortem. Data on sex, age and pathology were reported on the respective forms and then digitized. Of the total population (137 donkeys), stomach ulcers and associated gastritis were found in 100% of the samples, antral edema in 56.9%, parasites (Trichostrongylus axei) in 10.2%, and impaction in 5.8%. Furthermore, Hemomelasma gastric was found in one stomach (0.7%). As a conclusion, 100% of the evaluated animals presented at least some kind of gastric pathology. Acute gastritis was the most frequent type (71.5%), followed in a smaller proportion by chronic gastritis (28.4%). The study showed a significant statistical dependence between age and the degree of injury to the glandular mucosa (p < 0.05). Thus, it evidenced a high incidence of gastric pathologies in donkeys in different livestock holdings in Cordoba, among which squamous ulcers are the most frequent ones, followed by acute gastritis and antral edema. For this reason, it is necessary to do more research and to raise awareness about the treatment of these pathologies in these animals.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"4 1","pages":"23-34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75588811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is important to develop non-chemical control strategies. Nematophagous fungi can be a viable and promising alternative for the control of these endoparasites. This study aimed to isolate, identify and evaluate in vitro the potential of nematophagous fungi from Cundinamarca on L3 larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes of cattle. 60 soil samples from cattle ranches were sown in Petri boxes containing agar-water for trapping fungi, and three strains of the fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora (L1, XVIII, and XXI) and one of Arthrobotrys musiformis (XXIV) were identified by morphometric keys. 1 x 10 6 conidia or chlamydospores of each fungi were used, which faced 100 nematode larvae. Isolate XXIV ( A. musiformis ) showed greater predatory capacity (96.8%) than isolates ( A. oligospora ) XVIII, L1, and XXI (69.68, 71.1, and 87.62%, respectively). There were no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) among the strains with more predatory capacity. This is the first record of in vitro identification and evaluation of the predatory capacity of A. oligospora and A. musiformis , native fungi from Cundinamarca. The results suggest that these fungi could be used as biocontrol agents of nematodes in cattle.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"98 1","pages":"47-55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86076860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various tissues from animals, kept by different techniques and implanted in recipients of the same or different species, help repair wounds where extensive tissue loss or the inability to scarring is evidenced. Although the benefits of biological membranes outweigh their disadvantages, their use in clinical and surgical routines is rare, largely due to ignorance of their characteristics, handling and implantation. The diagnosis is incidental and surgical removal of the parasite is necessary as a treatment. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and therapeutic management of a Saguinus leucopus with nodules and ileal intussusception caused by Prosthenorchis sp. During the clinical examination, the patient was depressed, prostrate, hypothermic, and presenting low body condition, with generalized skin desquamation, alopecia in the distal third of the tail, and chipped canine teeth. Abdominal palpation evidenced nodules in groins. The blood count presented leukopenia, lymphopenia, and neutropenia; low hemoglobin; hypochromia and mild polychromatophilia. Prostenorchis sp. eggs and strongyles were found in stool. The patient was admitted to surgery, through which ileal intussusception was detected; for this reason, an enterotomy was performed followed by end-to-side enteroenterostomy of the ileum to the antimesenteric border of the caecum. Despite the antibiotic and analgesic treatment, the patient did not improve, it went into cardiac arrest and died. The histopathologic diagnosis was fibrinous peritonitis. This was a typical clinical history of Prosthenorchis sp., in which the patient’s prognosis was bad and the outcome was not favorable, due both to parasitism and nutritional deficiencies present. Surgery is the treatment of choice; however, it is necessary to consider that patients with advanced clinical symptoms have a poor prognosis.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"17 1","pages":"75-83"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73332187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Se estudiaron 1985 animales con edades comprendidas entre los 19 y los 23 meses de edad, alimentados con pasturas tropicales (Brachiaria brizantha, Brachiaria decumbes y Panicum maximun) y evaluados a traves de examen andrologico. Se valoraron las caracteristicas fisicas del eyaculado, la morfologia espermatica y el perimetro escrotal (PE). Tras el examen andrologico, los animales se clasificaron como aptos para la reproduccion (clase andrologica 1); aptos para la reproduccion en regimen de monta natural (clase 2); no aptos para la reproduccion temporalmente (clase 3) y descartados (clase 5). Para comparar las medias encontradas entre las clases andrologicas se utilizaron dos pruebas: la de Tukey, con probabilidad del 5 % de error, y la de correlaciones simples de Pearson, para verificar las relaciones entre las caracteristicas estudiadas. Se encontro que el 84,5 % de los toros son sexualmente maduros. El 39,75 % de los animales aptos para la reproduccion presento un PE mayor a 34 cm, y solo el 0,71 % de la poblacion estudiada exhibio una circunferencia escrotal inferior a 28 cm. Se registraron correlaciones altas favorables entre PE y las caracteristicas fisicas del semen. Se concluye que el PE es una excelente caracteristica para evaluar y seleccionar toros jovenes de la raza nelore.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"66 1","pages":"11-22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72562006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is distributed worldwide and generates a high impact on livestock, due to a decrease in production, loss of genetic potential by early replacement of infected animals, and increase in mortality. Objectives : To evaluate the presence of anti-MAP antibodies in dairy farms in southern Narino and to describe their distribution according to population characteristics. Methods : A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 958 cows over 2 years of age in 16 dairy farms. To determine the presence of antibodies, the indirect Elisa diagnostic test was used (Svanova® commercial kit). Seropositivity was associated with variables of race, age, location, body condition, lactation number, and clinical state by using the chi-square test statistic. Results : There were found 15 farms (94%) with at least one positive animal and 77 cows (8%) with anti-MAP antibodies. A significant association (p < 0.05) with the animal’s body condition was established. Conclusions : Cows with anti-MAP antibodies were found in major dairy municipalities; it was found that MAP-seroprevalence is not connected to age, race, location and clinical status, but it is linked to body condition.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"33 1","pages":"57-66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91085697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is caused by microscopic endoglobular hemotropic parasites such as Anaplasma spp. and Babesia spp. In this study, 131 pure Gyr cows were studied from four cattle farms in Cordoba, Colombia. A blood sample of 5 ml was collected from the coccygeal vein for hematocrit determination and for blood smears stained with Wright’s stain, in order to assess intracellular parasitic forms morphologically compatible with Anaplasma spp. and Babesia spp. Chi-square test was used to determine whether the variables of body condition, mucous color, sex and production system (grazing, semi-confinement, and confinement) were independent from the frequency of endoglobular hemotropic parasites. The study found that 24.43% of the sampled animals were positive for endoglobular hemotropic parasites; 20.61% (27/131) of them were positive for Anaplasma spp.; 3.05% (4/131) for Babesia spp., and 0.76% (1/131) for both Anaplasma spp. and Babesia spp. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were found for variables of mucous color, sex and production system (grazing, semi-confinement, and confinement). This allowed to register for the first time the prevalence of infection by endoglobular hemotropic parasites in Bos indicus cattle, of the Gyr breed specifically.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"112 1","pages":"67-74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76794816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given the socio-economic importance of goat production in the Falcon state (Venezuela), this research aimed to epidemiologically characterize the disease in herds in the Paraguana peninsula. The research is descriptive. Field work lasted six weeks, during which superficial lymph nodes were inspected, and 71 samples of purulent discharge were obtained from animals suspected to suffer from CL, according to their clinical manifestations. Back in the laboratory, specimens were bacteriologically analyzed; C. pseudotuberculosis isolates were compared with the reference strain ATCC 19410. The only risk factor detected for CL (p < 0.05) was the origin of goats by production units; those with the highest prevalence were located in the municipality of Falcon. Injuries in subscapular lymph nodes were the most frequent (p < 0.05) among the diagnosed animals. Penicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and novobiocin-resistant strains were identified. These results are important to raise awareness among producers, given that this activity is of vital importance for the region and in many cases ignorance on the subject was evidenced.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"111 6 1","pages":"35-45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83541031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 1850 they were given sanitary and zootechnical responsibilities, although many of them continued practicing horse shodding. With the creation of veterinary schools, the foundations of modern veterinary medicine were established in Spain; this has a special importance for public health issues, especially regarding figures like deputy veterinary and meat inspector, as they tried to understand the impact of animal diseases on the population who consumed animal meat. Studies in the Historical Archives of Jerez de los Caballeros (Badajoz, Spain) made it possible to analyze how veterinary professionals lived and worked there during the 19th century, how they settled in or left the city, how they treated epidemics in animals for human consumption, and how they suffered the economic difficulties of the period and the City.
