Si-NPs were synthesized using sorghum straw, characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy, SEM/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Assessment of the results carried out on the synthesized Si-NPs revealed the following: FTIR showed absorption bands at 790.20, 1051.10, 1636.30, and 3403.10 cm-1 indicating the presence of Si-H, Si-O-Si, Si-O and Si-OH respectively. XRD analysis showed that the Si-NPs had an average size of 30.46 nm. SEM analysis showed that the Si-NPs were made up of amorphous mesoporous structures. The elemental composition of the sample was found to be 65.33 % Si, 12.77 % O, 11.05 % Al, 5.23 % Fe, 3.42 % C and 2.20 % Na. The result from the germination study demonstrated that as the concentration of Si-NPs increased from (0-8 g/L), the germination rate and vigour index of seeds also increased, with 8 g/L having the highest germinated seedlings. The control which has no Si-NPs recorded the least seedling growth. The study of the germination time also showed that seeds with the highest Si-NPs concentration of 8 g/L, germinated within the least germination period (2 days) when compared with the germination period of the control. This research has shown that increase in concentration of Si-NPs have a positive effect on the germination of Beta vulgaris (Beetroot).","PeriodicalId":213779,"journal":{"name":"Dutse Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":" 88","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141826892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MLE) was used as a plant growth stimulator for Amaranthus hybridus, using two different application techniques (priming and foliar spraying). The treatments used for the experiment were 10%, 20%, and 30% MLE solutions, and 10%, 20%, and 30% mg/L gibberellic acid (GA3) solutions, and distilled water. Viable seeds of A. hybridus were primed with MLE treatments and sown in 21 different polythene bags filled with top soils. Similarly, seeds of A. hybridus were sown in another 21 polythene bags and sprayed foliarly every two days for four weeks. All the 42 bags were arranged in a Completely Randomized Design at the screened house of the Botanical Garden, Lagos State University. The results from the growth analysis showed that although 20% GA3 had the highest value of 14.37 cm for shoot height (p<0.05), 30% MLE was the closest among the MLE treatments with 9.12 cm. While there was no significant difference across the samples for stem girth and number of leaves (p>0.05), there was a standout performer for chlorophylls. 30% MLE recorded the highest values of 9.33 mg/100g, 4.67 mg/100g, 14.00 mg/100g for Chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll, and all with significant differences. Interestingly, all the best performing treatments were from A. hybridus plants cultivated using the foliar spraying techniques, thereby making it a better application technique than the phytopriming. Generally, the 30% MLE displayed the best potential in the stimulation of growth and enhancement of chlorophyll contents of A. hybridus which could be of great value to those in the agriculture, food and pharmaceutical industries.","PeriodicalId":213779,"journal":{"name":"Dutse Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":" 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141827296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 20 different samples were randomly collected from ten (10) different food vendors at the University of Benin Food Court, Benin City, Nigeria. Swab samples were inoculated using streak plate and incubated at 24 hours at 37oC. The samples were sub-cultured after 24 hours and identified based on cultural characteristics, morphology and biochemical tests. The bacteria isolated include Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus from nasal swab samples while Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from hand swab samples. The frequency of occurrence of the bacteria recovered from hand was Staphylococcus epidermidis 7(70%), Staphylococcus aureus 3(30%) while Staphylococcus aureus 5(50%), Staphylococcus epidermidis 2(20%) and Bacillus cereus 3(30%) were recovered from nasal swab respectively. The antibiotic susceptibility and resistance pattern exhibited by the recovered isolates from the nasal swab showed that 10(100%) of all the isolates were susceptible to Pefloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, Streptomycin and Co-trimoxazole(septrin) respectively while 0(0%) of the recovered isolates were resistant to Cefuroxime respectively whereas the recovered Staphylococcus epidermidis from the hand swab had 5 (71.4%) which were susceptible to Gentamycin, 3(42.9%) which were susceptible to Ampiclox, 2(28.6%) which were susceptible to Rocephin, and 5(57.1%) were susceptible to Erythromycin. Consequently, it is suggested that the food vendors should adhere strictly to good hygiene practices and health practices in line with regulatory standards.","PeriodicalId":213779,"journal":{"name":"Dutse Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":" 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141827810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The SA obtained from plant sources were form into three different concentrations (5mg/l, 10mg/l, and 20mg/l) by serial dilution. Moringa plants were treated by spraying with varying doses of SA hormones at week intervals. The treated plants were blocked in screened cages in a completely randomized blocked pattern. Five pairs of freshly emerged Noorda moringae were maintained in the various blocks for mating and oviposition, after which all adult insects were removed thereafter. The treated moringa plants exhibited different responses to budworm development. There was a significant (P<0.001) effect among hormone concentrations and spray regimes, with 20mg/l salicylic acid (SA) showing greater influence on various developmental stages of larval N. moringae compared to lower concentrations (10 & 5mg/l SA) and the control (Distilled H2O). The higher levels of SA at median spray regime (2 weeks after spray) hindered larval development more, as evidenced by low growth rate (RGR) and Larval Fitness Indices (LFI) respectively. Phytochemical analysis of the extracts revealed notable concentrations of 9-octadecanoic acid methyl ester, Methyl tetradecanoate, Methyl 4-hydroxy butanoate, and Hexadecanoic acid methyl ester, which displayed toxic effects on the developing larvae.","PeriodicalId":213779,"journal":{"name":"Dutse Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":" 94","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141825023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study investigates the use of alcohol among inter-city commercial drivers in Benin City. Data on prevalence, pattern, risk and reasons for the use of alcohol were collected using a structured questionnaire. Chi-square was used to compared data from motor parks across the three LGA (Oredo, Egor, Ikpoba-Okha) in Benin City. Linear regression was performed to determine the association between the socio-demographics of the respondents and with rate of alcohol consumption. Results were considered significant at P < 0.05. The prevalence of alcohol use was 100%, more than half (58.1%) of the commercial drivers were heavy user of alcohol. The majority (66.9%) drink spirits, and about one-third (31.1%) have the risk of injuring themselves or someone else during the last year as a result of drinking (P = < 0.0001, χ2 = 58.50), and 67.5% were concerned by relative, friends, doctor/other health workers about drinking and need to cut down on their habit ((P = < 0.0001, χ2 = 27.18). The most common reason for the use of alcohol was coping with stress and job pressure (84.5). Age, educational qualification and monthly income were associated with the rate of alcohol use by the respondents (P < 0.05, OR = -0.239, -0.436, -0.165 at 95% CI). Most of the commercial drivers were observed to be at risk as a result of alcohol consumption. There was an association between age, educational level and monthly income level with the rate of alcohol use.","PeriodicalId":213779,"journal":{"name":"Dutse Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":" 25","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141825190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research paper explores the economic contributions of primary waste scavengers (i.e waste pickers) in Urban Yola North, highlighting their significant contribution in turning waste into money. The paper focuses on how scavenging helps to build a more sustainable urban environment by producing cash, employment, and raw materials for the recycling sector. Drawing on a sample of 205 waste scavengers through surveys and interview, the findings reveal that majority (88.73%) derive economic benefits from their work; in addition to 1.95% presented environmental motivations. More than half of the respondents (54.15%) report a monthly income between N11,000 and N20,000, with smaller proportions earning higher incomes. These findings offer valuable insights into the economic contributions of waste scavengers in Urban Yola North. This research expands our understanding of waste-to-wealth initiatives in similar urban settings, laying the groundwork for broader discussions and strategies to enhance the well-being and livelihoods of waste scavengers, ultimately contributing to sustainable livelihoods in urban centres. The study recommends provision of social security such as social assistance programs and other interventions to reduce their social exclusion, and employer and employee rights should be maintained by law, between the waste pickers and their masters (middlemen) in order to reduce extortion in the industry. Formalization of the occupation will also be considered to improve the nature of their operation and ensure their safety.","PeriodicalId":213779,"journal":{"name":"Dutse Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":" 65","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141825448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

About sixty-seven samples were obtained from the field, thirty of the samples were selected, the thirty samples were divided into three, the first part was used to prepare thin section, the second part was used for geochemical analysis and the third part was preserved. Based on the macroscopic and microscopic studies of the study area, six distinct litho-petrological units were discovered. These includes; Ryolite Dyke, Biotite Granite, Metatexite (Banded Ortho-Gneiss, Stromatic Migmatite), Diatexite (Leucocratic Diatexite, Mesocratic Diatexite, Melanocratic Diatexite), Nebulite and Schist. They were petrographically studied to contain biotite, quartz, plagioclase feldspar, alkali feldspar, hornblende, pyroxene, etc. The presence of orthopyroxenes indicates an intensed prograde metamorphism (granulite facie). The area is affected by NE/SW trending Pan-African structures being cross-cut by NW/SE trending Cretaceous trends as evident from the Rose plot. The ductile stress that affected the terrain brought about the numerous ptygmatic folds which make the area to be declared a Shear Zone. ","PeriodicalId":213779,"journal":{"name":"Dutse Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":" 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141827337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are important in the food and fermentation industry, where they are used for production of various alcoholic beverages, bread, and cheese. Yeast cells have also been used for their role in biotechnology and as model organisms for genetic research. Yeast cells play a critical role in soil ecosystems, contributing to nutrient cycling, plant health, and overall soil ecology. This study focuses on the isolation and characterization of yeast cells from soil samples in the study location. Soil samples were collected from five locations in Caleb University, representing diverse habitats and soil types. Yeasts were isolated using selective media that favored yeast growth while inhibiting the growth of other microorganisms. Isolated yeasts were characterized based on the colonial, morphological and biochemical characteristics. Twenty yeasts isolates were isolated and identified which fell into the genera; Candida species, Geotrichum species and Saccharomyces species. Candida species was most abundant with isolation rate of 45%. This research contributes to our understanding of yeast within soil ecosystems. This study provides insights to soil as a cheap source of yeasts cells. These yeasts could be harnessed due to their potential applications in agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental remediation.","PeriodicalId":213779,"journal":{"name":"Dutse Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":" 43","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141827596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the potential endosulfan-degrading (PED) bacteria were screened and identified from fresh soil samples collected from the Teaching and Research farm of Kwara State University, Nigeria. The bacterial strains were isolated using enrichment techniques and characterized through morphological, biochemical, and molecular analyses. Their potential for endosulfan utilization was assessed in an endosulfan-supplemented mineral salt medium. Three potential endosulfan-degrading (PED) bacterial strains isolated were Achromobacter xylosoxidans strain PED1, Pseudomonas alkylphenolica strain PED2, and Sphingomonas sp. Strain PED3 with the accession numbers MF973060, MF973061 and MF973062 respectively. The optical density (OD) values increased for all the isolates by the third day, and the highest OD values of 0.51 (PED1), 0.52 (PED2) and 0.59 (PED3) were recorded on the ninth day. The observed increase in population density of the isolates in the endosulfan-supplemented mineral salt medium suggests their capability to utilize the endosulfan compound. Further study is required to evaluate the suitability of these strains for bioremediation purposes.","PeriodicalId":213779,"journal":{"name":"Dutse Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":" 41","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141827598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The variations in the optical absorption coefficient, refractive index, extinction coefficient, reflectivity, and optical conductivity was examined over a range of temperatures and crystallographic orientations ([100], [010], [001]). The findings indicate that as temperature rises, there is a general decrease observed in the absorption coefficient, refractive index, extinction coefficient, and optical conductivity. Similarly, reflectivity also tends to decrease with increasing temperature. These findings suggest that Cubic CH3NH3SnI3 exhibits consistent transparency, a stable refractive index, and relatively high reflectivity across different temperature conditions. Its low optical conductivity, typical of semiconductor materials, indicates its suitability for facilitating efficient charge separation and transport within solar cells. This research significantly adds to our comprehension of the optical properties of CH3NH3SnI3, paving the way for its potential use in solar cell applications.","PeriodicalId":213779,"journal":{"name":"Dutse Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":" 95","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141824833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
