The application of LISREL models to 1995 SSM data shows two main routes of cultural reproduction. First, respondents' class of origin determines inherited cultural capital. Then, the inherited cultural capital affects lifestyle and high cultural activities. This process concerns habitus and cultural transmission by the family. Second, class of origin influences educational achievement, which influences destination. Then, destination determines high cultural activities. Also, the second route shows the cultural transmission by school and class conditions.The two main routes of cultural reproduction, family route and status attainment route, are affected by each other; however, substantive differences in the cultural reproduction process exist between men and wemen: (1) Wemen's class of origin has a positive effect on destination directly in contrast to men. (2) Wemen's destination influences their lifestyle directly, unlike men. (3) Men's inherited cultural capital affects both educational achievement and destination, but that of women affects educational achievement only. (4) For women, status attainment by marriage is an important life event, because lifestyle is influenced by destination. (5) Wemen's origin has a direct effect on destination. These findings also support our two main routes-model of cultural reproduction and lifestyle.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123676011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When a brand-switching matrix is analyzed using multidimensional scaling, it is necessary to rescale the matrix because there are differences among the overall sums of the rows and columns that depend on external factors, such as market share. This study introduces a new method that rescales one-mode two-way proximity matrices using entropy which shows the variance of brand-switching. In the present paper, we calculate the entropy of a row and column of a car-switching data, and use the result to reconstruct a new matrix. Then we analyze this matrix using multidimensional scaling. The results suggest that the congurations rescaled using our method can be interpreted as “circumplex”.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121548746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, religions exist as the basis for different cultures. In our Cross-national survey results, it was found that only 30% of the Japanese have religious faith but 70% think that religious feeling is important and that the meaning of religion is different between the Japanese and Westerners based on our cross-national surveys. The meaning of religion can be understood in the relation between religious attitudes and other social attitudes. The structure of thinking about religion and its relation to other items in our East Asia Value Survey were analyzed using multivariate analysis. The results concerning the differences among these areas were as follows. In Japan, Korea and Hong-Kong, satisfaction about daily life and religious feeling are related positively, whereas in Beijing, Shanghai and Taiwan, these are related negatively. Concerning attitudes toward science and technology, in some areas, including Japan, the medium attitude is related to religious feeling. We are continuing our on-going analysis toward seeking the meaning of religion in contemporary societies by including the results of seven Western nations' surveys.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114705183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study employs a residual analysis as a heuristic approach, which is a useful approach to choose explanatory variables effectively. In fact these characteristics are difficult to identify among numerous related variables, and a big residual value may involve the significant factor. The results reveal five major factors to have influences on the number of park visitors in concern: 1) population living in park's service distance; 2) volume of tall trees; 3) number of simple amusement equipment/facilities; 4) width of streets facing to a park; and 5) park elevation relative to surrounding road level. In addition, it was found that a block park has a service distance of 250 to 350 meters.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126309322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as the program has provided no procedure for estimating the variability of the estimated parameters, we could not examine the variability of the results, which might have sometimes led to misuse and misinterpretation of the results. This paper proposes an application of the jackknife and the bootstrap method to estimate the variability of the estimated parameters. Using these resampling methods we also propose a procedure for amalgamation of categories and selection of items. Applications are illustrated with two kinds of cohort data on circulatory diseases in Japan(Komazawa, 1982).","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126357606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The teachers were asked to express freely their ideas on the issue. Two rators coded the contents of 1, 332 free description answers into 91 categories in order to analyze them statistically. The number of answers with each category was counted and the major ideas were reported. Some of the major findings are as follows.(1)There are some ideas which were stated by many teachers and yet there are hardly any opposite ideas to them.(2)Some teachers showed opposite ideas to some other teachers' concerning six different topics on the university entrance examination.(3)The 0-1 type data matrix analyzed by dual scaling produced multiple dimensions major three of which were interpreted. The results suggested that each idea of improvement has both positive and negative aspects. We further discussed what should be taken into consideration to analyze free description answers.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125997854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the beginning of the 1990s, the response rate to these surveys has been decreasing, and is remarkably low in recent days. Since 2006, the average yearly response rate has been under 60%.I believe the main reason for the decline is increasing awareness of personal privacy. As evidence of this, there has been a greater rise in the percentage of people who decline to participate, than in the percentage of those who are not at home when interviewers visit. We have taken steps to improve the situation, such as hiring skilled interviewers, but it has not stopped the decline. At this moment, we do not have a sure-fire method for improving the rate of response.The current fashion is for RDD surveys, and if face-to-face interviews are to survive, I believe we must increase understanding of the importance of opinion polls. To that end, in addition to further improving the implementation of our surveys, we should make every effort to prepare fair-minded questions, analyze and report survey results appropriately and make data available to the public.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121968094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results were compared with those derived by their trial and error method based on the psychophysical point of view, especially in the estimation of chromaticity diagram. The multivariate techniques applied are Torgerson-Gower method(i. e. principal coordinate analysis), Shepard-Kruskal method(well known nonmetric multidimensional scaling), and a new method proposed by one of the authors, T. I. The features of the three methods were discussed during the course of analysing the ERG data. The chromaticity diagram predicted in the present study satisfied the psychophysical requirements better than that predicted by Riggs et al. In addition, the present analysis allowed to estimate the noise component in the observed ERG data and clarified their latent structures.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132121344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
