However, the children called “last 10%,” who are left behind after 90% school enrolment was achieved, are assumed to live particularly in rural area. Thus, policy analysis today is expected to assess their specific needs, and in order to analyze the effects from different life environments surrounding each individual, the methodology for hierarchical analysis is needed. However, such methodology is not yet generalized in the field of education policy analysis in developing countries. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to accumulate the case studies of hierarchical models. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the new methodology of hierarchical analysis into this field of study by proposing a needs assessment model for Tanzanian pupil’s literacy development, with a special attention to hierarchical environmental factors. This study hypothesizes that each individual child lives under two different hierarchical environments, “educational environment at individual level” and “public life environment at district level,” and analyzes how these hierarchical environmental factors affect on Tanzanian children’s literacy development, by using Hierarchical Generalized Linear Modeling.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126801876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When a researcher thinks the amount of data was sufficient and decides to stop collecting data, this index gives us useful information. By the encounter probability, we can know how often we get unknown words. Free description data from two companies was analyzed by some Pareto distributions to decide most suitable model to explain frequency of words. Parameters of these distributions were estimated by using Markov chain monte carlo mehod. Consequently it was shown that these free descriptions were sufficient amount of information by calculating encounter probability.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122734129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study the authors analyzed regional differences of health behaviors and social capital, and their relationship at an individual level, focusing on the M-region in Aichi Prefecture. The result revealed that the elderly in the M-region tended to exhibit better health behaviors and richer social capital. Although some of the social capital indices showed significant associations with the health behaviors at an individual level, this might only explain a part of the differences we observed in health behaviors between the M-region and the other region. We then discussed the role of social capital at a community level to explain the better health behaviors that occur in the M-region, and proposed the importance of sha-en (social relations with co-workers or business partners), as a more fundamental local condition for ‘a healthy neighborhood’.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128966651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is said that joint uses of MDS and cluster analysis is often desirable. In this study, we showed that the joint use of MDS and cluster analysis also worked well in the above case, through the analysis of two-mode three-way proximity data such as several variance-covariance matrices of objects obtained from each condition. We also used an external analysis with MDS to show the information about each of the two modes on the same configuration simultaneously, in order to easily observe the global structure of data through the configuration.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133456276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, each study extracted arbitrary dimensions. In this circumstance, this study aimed to extract the robust “consumer perception of TV commercials” characteristics, with reference to the results of previous studies. In detail, 156 female students underwent an audiovisual experiment to evaluate 20 items regarding “consumer perception of TV commercials” on a 7-point scale for 30 television commercials of food products. Then, I conducted the factor analysis and extracted five factors: “stimulation,” “conveyance,” “sensation,” “utility,” and “dignity.” Furthermore, I checked the reliability, the robustness and the appropriateness of the structures of these five factors.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131579374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PPM is a new technique based on a projective method that uses photographs to capture perceived environments. First, we developed the social identity scale by referring to previous researches on social identity scales and a sense of community scales. Second, 96 university students were provided with a camera and requested to photograph their daily lives in their universities for a week. The Correspondence Analysis showed that the pictures represented some new aspects of the social identities that could not be measured by ordinal social identity scales based on verbal responses. Further, the significant correlations between social identity measured by PPM and social identity measured by verbal responses suggested the validity of PPM. We discussed the possibilities and disadvantages of the PPM as a tool of social research.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126231283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their article has also become a basis for criteria of metabolic syndrome in Japan; however, their article has various problems on statistical aspects. How the criteria on waist circumference should vary was investigated through reexamination based on descriptions in their article. First, their article obtained criteria on visceral fat area (VFA) from data in which males and females were pooled, while our reexamination suggested that we should use separate criteria on VFA between males and females. Second, their article inappropriately used regression lines to estimate waist circumference corresponding to VFA cut-off points. Our reexamination with errors-in-variables models suggested alternative cut-off points of waist circumference at 87 cm for males and 85 cm for females. Our simulation confirmed that the criteria by their article might lead to inappropriate diagnosis which is strict for males and easy for females.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114558593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
