In a pretest-posttest experiment, the measurements are made both at baseline and at follow-up in order to eliminate individual variability. There exist several methods that have been proposed to estimate the treatment effect and/or to test that there is no effects at all.In pretest-posttest designs, screening is often made upon the baseline measurements: that is only the individuals who meet some pre-specified requirement are allowed to enter the experiment. In such cases, we have to take into account the effect of the regression to the mean in the analysis to obtain proper conclusions.In this review article, various topics are discussed which are related to pretest-posttest designs and to the regression to the mean as well. We give mathematical results concerning moments of truncated normal distributions, which are useful to understand the underlying theory of the pretest-posttest data. Extensive references are also given.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123034009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Usually, we can easily obtain information on the degree of price promotion from POS data. On the other hand, unless the investigator collects information on the execution of non-price promotion in every retail store, we can not obtain this information. In this article, we consider the problem of identifying whether or not non-price promotion is conducted. We treat a non-price promotion execute/non-execute as a ‘state’. In that case, we assume that there is an unknown stationary probability matrix which describes the probability of a transition between states. Each state is characterized by a different stationary time series with unknown parameters. The objective of the analysis is to identify the regression model and to assign a state probability to each time instant. Finally, we give a high precision estimator of a past non-price promotion based on the proposed model.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128719428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The wide range of opinions has given rise to an ongoing debate regarding the future role of Internet surveys (in particular, Web surveys) based on the role that self-administration will play in research. We started by arranging a practical procedure for electronic data collection on the Web surveys experimentally designed from the viewpoint of “data science. Aiming to verify the applicability, possibilities, and limitations of Web survey methods, we conducted three experimental surveys during the period from 1997 to 2000. They were designed to enable comparison with each other and with traditional methods such as face-to-face interviews and online surveys using conventional sampling procedures. These surveys provided informative results about the characteristics of Web surveys. In the first survey, consisting of 12 continual surveys of a single panel of registrants, we examined the relationship between the response rates and the questionnaire's design, volume and content, as well as response rate differences among the 12 surveys and the discrepancies in repeated surveys. In the second experimental survey, we carried out Web surveys at about the same time on three different sites together with non-internet surveys using conventional sampling methods. Our experimental design enabled objective comparison of the surveys by using as much identical questionnaire design as possible. Our experimental surveys showed that Web survey results are similar to each other while distinctively differing from those of conventional surveys. In the third experimental survey, we simultaneously carried out a series of comparative surveys in order to examine the general characteristics of Web surveys found during the second experimental survey. Except that the number of sites used was two instead of three, the third experimental surveys were carried out in the same way as in the second trial. We confirmed the results that the same characteristics were evident again in the second survey. We also found that how the registrants of the surveys (named “resources”) were selected and whether the interval between solicitation and survey was short or long would be factors influencing the answers and response-rate. We also found that the respondents do not necessarily represent the resources. In addition, as an addendum in this paper, we report partly the results of a fourth experimental survey which has been carried out in 2001 to 2002 and compare it with the findings of the previous three trials. In particular, we also analyze the itemized causes of “nonresponse” on the datasets obtained from the tracking procedure of tracing electronically each respondent on the WWW. The fourth survey consists of Web surveys on three separate sites while the other surveys were based on conventional sampling methods (e.g., face-to-face interviews","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126871119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We proposed a new indirect method to measure the probability implied by such terms. An indirect measurement was based on the method used by the experiments of Tversky & Fox (1995). We applied the direct and indirect methods to measure the meanings of terms, and validated the new methods. Finally, the differences between the indirect and the direct measurement methods were discussed. We found that in indirect method subjects evaluated the probabilistic terms more literally than in direct method.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126357550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The existence of the response bias in SDS, however, has been suggested by several researchers. The purpose of the present study was to examine precisely the response bias in the Japanese version of the SDS. Data from 2, 097 Japanese high school students are shown to illustrate the response bias related to the positive or negative expressions of items in the scale with statistical methods of analysis, together with several sets of empirical data from otherstudies. The findings were discussed in terms of statistical view. In this paper we discuss the hypothesis testing in that case, i.e., the situation where the degrees of freedom of error are so small that usual test procedures in MANOVA can not be applied for given data. We propose a test procedure with a single test statistic. The test statistic is a multiplication of the sequence of test statistics based on principal component analysis proposed by Dempster (1963a, 1963b). We also propose an influential measure of each individual for the result of the test, and a criterion of how many principal components should be incorporated in the test when the degree of hypothesis is only one. The test procedure for multivariate two sample problem is demonstrated with some data sets appeared in literature.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129052786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially, Goodman's association models(1979)were discussed by reanalyzing the well-known sets of data. This manuscript presents the comparisons of the results by use of association models with those obtained using the canonical correlation analysis to locate the association models in the analysis of ordered categorical data. The examination of the agreement of the association models and Plackett's model(1965)with the bivariate normal may clarify the utility of association models. Then, the inference in contingency tables with ordered categories is mentioned based on Plackett's coefihcient of association. Furthermore, the association models may be generalized tomultiway contingency tables. Some examples are illustrated in the context of potential application of the association models to analyze the various types of ordered categorical data.","PeriodicalId":211147,"journal":{"name":"The Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130693850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
