The Program is designed to engage engineering students with engineering-oriented topics and issues while maintaining Pitt's Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences (and Composition Program's) missions and goals, which include rigorous inquiry leading to fluent and responsible communication of ideas. E/FYEWP faculty initially integrated engineering topics into already existing liberal-arts-oriented writing assignments. However, once we began getting to know our engineering students and their writing, we realized that to best support our students, we needed to treat engineering as more than a “topic.” We needed to construct assignments around engineering as a discipline, which employs significant and particular ways of pursuing insight and constructing meaning. This paper will detail changes made to maximize first year students' engagement with E/FYEWP writing assignments.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116856098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the generic competences to get a university degree, one of them states to “act with ethics, professional responsibility, and social commitment, considering the economic, social and environmental impact of its activity in the local and global context”. In this paper, we explored the experience carried out in the Computing Course. Our objective is to contribute to increase this competence which brings knowledge into play. The project-oriented learning method was used. The project started with the search and selection of information, focused on the social and environmental impact of technological evolution and the responsibility for its use and development. The result was an Infographic, and, in its elaboration, the students also displayed their synthesis skills.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115142023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And now, information and communication technologies have been deeply involved in this process, even more making extensive use of social networks as a pedagogical tool. This article summarizes a teaching-learning experience with quasi-experimental methodological design that uses the social network Facebook to try to increase the academic performance of students. With this purpose, two groups of a compulsory course were selected in the Faculty of Computer Science, one controlled with the traditional method and the other experimentally controlled with the help of the aforementioned social network. Results show an improvement in academic performance of students using a social network.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115475142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the following article, we ought to know if the gradual inclusion of research tasks in different courses and at different levels of the curriculum would improve the student's research skills. In addition to master related topics such as bibliographic material search and classification, description of methodologies followed in research articles, critical analysis, report writing, oral presentation among others. Consequently, the skills gained by the students will aid in the elaboration of the final research project and academic articles requested as part of the curriculum and ultimately to obtain their professional degree. In the following research, we describe the methodology followed, the qualification rubrics used for the different levels; together with the experiences gained, limitations encountered and success cases derived from the application of this gradual approach.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126053240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A large set of exam versions is generated; each student receives a particular version with specific numerical data, and even specific questions. Exams are composed through LaTeX text processing instructions. As this process can be very tedious, Matlab/Octave scripts are included so as to automate the generation of input data and the corresponding answers for all versions. AMC then scans all returned exams, computes the scores and sends the marked exams back to the students through e-mail. Benefits arising from this methodology are as follows: (i) the students receive fast, detailed feedback from which they can self-evaluate their own learning process, and (ii) executing statistical analyses regarding the students' overall performance with respect to a particular question or topic is straightforward.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126175795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to Peruvian Technical Standard NTP 732.001, technological development is the application of knowledge for the creation or improvement of products or processes or management up to the level of demonstrative pilots, and the technological development project activity (TDP), is linked to the design and implementation of a prototype that solves a requirement of reality. The research question is, which approach should address the management of activities RDI so that technological development projects allow contributing to develop new competencies in the engineer and preserve the knowledge generated? The UNPRG's Electronic Engineering Program aims to be a successful program thanks by its competitive professionals, its links with companies for activities RDI, valued by the knowledge generated by its students and professors, and the appropriate approach should be based on knowledge management and interdisciplinarity.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126972662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of virtual labs and equipment facilitates active online learning. This meets habits of today's students who are always online and serves to fully engage them in STEM learning. This paper discusses the challenges and prospects of implementing simulation-based adjustable online learning activities, v-labs and comprehensive e-learning environments for teaching subjects, such as energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, thermodynamics, materials science, and some others to diverse cohorts of students from different parts of the world. The virtual labs were integrated with various online courses, including massive open online courses (MOOC) platforms. The use of these tools results in deeper understanding and transferable knowledge and skills for the learners.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122509030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study details, that of the total of entrants since 2008, 37% of students finished the program, of which, only 15% of students approved all the courses of the curriculum of studies, without disapproving any course; This indicator generates great concern regarding the achievement of skills and continuity of students in the program. In order to solve this problem, academic strategies were applied to strengthen intrinsic motivation, using the implementation of virtual classrooms, technical visits and seminars by experts. Achieving to date a favorable result in the academic performance and the reduction of students who leave the program.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124646069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first year project is gaining importance as a means of encouragement and retention of new students. But there is a clear recommendation to cover the intervening years with a similar experience, in order not to lose the benefits achieved with that first experience. In a computer program, design projects have been implemented for each of the first three years. These years of study are common and then the students can opt for mentions in the areas of software engineering, information systems and information technology, so these projects should cover common content. The results have greatly justified the effort to design and implement these activities, both as for the enthusiastic acceptance by the students and the effect on the local and international accreditations obtained.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132602310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
