The colonial governments took the help of many agencies to prove that the religious systems of the natives and their affiliated cultures were inferior to the superior European culture. The paper argues that the native cultures were not only environment friendly, but also tolerant. The paper illustrates that the current problems like environmental degradation and religious intolerance is a result of the dismantling of these structures.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122815883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solid waste has turn out to be the main concern. Solid Waste Management (SWM) is expensive and complex system for local self-governing organizations as it is directly concerned with the health, environment and quality of life of the local people. Incorrect waste collection practices and improper solid waste disposal can pose a serious hazard of local disease outbreak, water source pollution and greenhouse gases.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121881512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, the work examines various repertoires of resistance employed by the ACT (Affected Citizens of Teesta in general and the indigenous Lepcha Community in particular against the construction of dams in the Dzongu region in Sikkim. Various spaces, particularly cultural, ecological, and political erasure are endangered by the construction of dams across Teesta and the ACT articulates resistance, and engages in constructive development alternatives, in each of these spaces. The discursive articulations of resistance provide a crucial counterpoint to material expressions of struggle. Discursive resistance takes the form of academic analyses and tribal testimonials. Utilizing Warren's concept of testimonials, which has been used by Paul Routledge in his analysis of the Narmada struggle, the study argues that movement identity articulates a unity that effaces internal difference, contradiction, and ambiguity. The paper concludes with some thoughts on the role of academics in highlighting such ambiguities, in the context of collaboration with social movements.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131110835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Raj","doi":"10.5958/J.2249-0035.7.3.041","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5958/J.2249-0035.7.3.041","url":null,"abstract":"In modern societies liberalism is supposed to be the most suitable doctrine for accommodating and advancing individual differences but this principle does not hold true when it comes to handle ethnic or cultural differences. The classical liberal formula of separation of public and private realm and the location of culture within the private sphere leads to the failure of this approach. This happens because this approach fails to capture the significance of culture and ethnicity of individuals and groups. Taking this deficit of liberalism as their point of departure, critics have suggested alternative strategies for accommodating cultural diversity under the rubric of multiculturalism. Multiculturalism aims to facilitate greater inclusion and integration of marginalized groups in culturally diverse societies. However despite its inclusive tendencies multiculturalism is often criticized by many on the pretext that it is against the maintenance of unified national identity and it leads to segregation by undermining interpersonal trust and solidarity in culturally diverse societies. They also feel that multicultural policies are dangerous as they undermine the liberal principles of equality and impartiality. They believe that recognition of group specific rights means denying the equal treatment of the individual and argue that liberalism by protecting the individual freedom of association offers the best possible strategy for accommodating cultural diversity. This article will first try to highlight the different ideas aired by different liberal scholars for adjusting different cultural demands and what is the best defense of liberal principles in order to adjust to cultural demands in a culturally pluralistic society.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132319343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was conducted on fifty working and fifty non-working women in the age range of 20–40 years. To measure the marital adjustment of respondents, the Marital Adjustment Questionnaire prepared by Pramod Kumar and Kanchana Rohtagi was used. Findings of this study indicated that non-working women were better at marital adjustment. It was also found that marital adjustment was better in the later years of marriage as compared with the early years. Women from nuclear families were found to have better marital adjustment than women from joint families.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121785157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
