Responses to different types of probes (explanation, elaboration and category selection probes) were examined in terms of length and quality, measured by number of characters, number of themes, and an indicator for response quality. The research messenger layout, regardless of device being used, had a negative effect on both response length, number of themes and response quality. Further, we found that in both the traditional and research messenger layout, using a mobile device negatively affects the number of characters and themes used in probed responses. We conclude that probing is most effective when a traditional survey is completed on a computer. The research messenger layout was not able to generate responses of similar quality compared to the traditional layout, regardless of device being used.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117117119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are, in order of appearance: Christine Musselin, sociologist at Sciences Po Paris and specialist in research on higher education; Erik Neveu, political scientist at Sciences Po Rennes and known for his work on social movements, gender, cultural studies, and journalism, amongst others; and André Blais, political scientist at the University of Montreal and specialist in electoral analysis and the study of public opinion. These three texts belong to the category of articles we have so far called ‘What is at Stake in my Work?’, in which we ask colleagues who have made what we call a fine career to reflect on the role played by methodology at key stages in their work. Until now, we have tended to spread out such contributions: Philippe Cibois’ in the first issue of the new BMS, in 2018; Nonna Mayer’s in the issue that followed (139); Sidney Tarrow’s in 2019 and François Dubet’s a few months ago. We are very grateful to all seven of them for agreeing to offer an article to a modest journal such as ours. It may not seem very strategic to publish three texts by influential authors together: these have every chance of attracting a large number of readers, as those we have published previously have done. With this choice we wanted to highlight the BMS’s appetite for diversity of scientific approaches and our deep commitment to methodological eclecticism. Although they received the same invitation, our three colleagues offered us texts that are wildly dissimilar, starting with their length – more than 12,000 words for Musselin and Neveu, barely over 5,000 for Blais, whose brevity is in fact deliberate. The tone is more or less sharp, the presentation of the methods implemented more or less detailed. Above all, each of them asserts different scientific choices in terms of research methods and techniques. Christine Musselin shows how her research on higher education institutions developed from a sociological approach strongly linked to a method and a research centre, themselves associated with a prestigious researcher – the sociology of organisations and the CSO, founded by Michel Crozier, in much the same vein as François Dubet previously evoked the sociological intervention and Alain Touraine’s team. Erik Neveu reveals methodological choices constructed voluntarily and by affinities, both positive and negative, in which the research methods are superseded by epistemological orientations. André Blais also strongly asserts his scientific convictions, albeit in a very different tone, although he champions the very methods rejected by Erik Neveu. Yet for both, methodological approaches are applied more or less independently from the type of subject covered. These articles thus feature three prestigious careers, three renowned bodies of work, three widely read and quoted researchers who have each in turn ","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127550853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The answer could be by looking back at forty years of research structured by a reflexive nomadism, an investment in conceptual import-export and a passion for objects which have rarely been the most legitimate for political scientists. What emerges thus are epistemological lessons and suggestions of analytical methods. What could be a panoptical approach of cultural goods? Faire de la recherche est pour moi une œuvre collective qui se réalise en équipe. Cette recherche porte d’abord sur des questions descriptives fondamentales. Pour l’analyse des causes des relations de causalité, on a intérêt à utiliser, lorsque c’est possible, des devis expérimentaux ou quasi-expérimentaux. L’aspect le plus pénible mais aussi le plus crucial est la rédaction des manuscrits, qui est plus facilement supportable à petites doses et à tous les jours. VIRAGE provides two samples of homo-/bisexual respondents who answered the same questionnaire: a volunteer sample recruited through a communications campaign, who responded via Internet; and respondents to a general population telephone survey who identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual. Sexual identification is a sensitive issue, and surveys of private households do not necessarily capture either all victims of violence or all of those who identify as homosexual or bisexual. The general population sample thus cannot be considered representative of these groups. Lesbian and bisexual women in both samples reported more family violence than gay and bisexual men. Homo-/bisexual respondents in VIRAGE’s convenience sample reported more experiences of violence than those in its general population sample. This difference may be explained by various factors: effects of the data collection mode, and of data collection strategies more generally, as well as the heterogeneity of populations in terms of either exposure to violence or the propensity to report it. We use logistic regression methods to understand these differences, controlling for the differences between the characteristics of the respondents in the two samples. In addition to sociodemographic characteristics, we hypothesized that sexual trajectories and practices of sociability among homosexuals and bisexuals could affect the reporting and perception of violence. After these analyses, differences remain, but to a variable extent depending on sex, sexual identification, and forms of violence. The resulting models explain the differences in reporting between samples for men less well than for women. This result can be interpreted as the consequence of a difference between women’s and men’s exposure to violence: independently of the effects of data collection mode and sampling differences, the high probability that female sexual minorities will experience family violence leads to relatively high reporting in the two samples.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"148 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132961686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Faced with these situations, researchers have sometimes considered that their work begins once the conflicts have stabilized, thus favouring archives (written or oral) and secondary sources over observation and interviews collected in context. Despite the difficulties it poses, however, investigation in context offers the researcher, through a sometimes-brutal confrontation with exceptional situations, the possibility of greater theoretical creativity by opening to new objects and new research questions. In return, such research requires a more reactive modality of theoretical elaboration, with a constant reciprocal interaction between hypotheses and data production. Rather than developing these themes in an abstract way, we return to the investigation we conducted on the Syrian conflict. We analyse in particular the difficulties of access, the risks of selection bias, the problems associated with remote research and subcontracting of data production, and the advantages of conducting collective fieldwork.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115214985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Revenant sur une enquête par méthodes mixtes, cet article se penche sur les ressorts de ce phénomène. La méfiance des trans’ repose sur deux principales raisons. La première touche à l’expertise et plus précisément au point de vue des expertċeċs professionnelċleċs, les personnes concernées ayant, pour beaucoup, déjà été objectivées par des expertċeċs médicauxċales et juridiques non-trans’. La seconde concerne la catégorisation du sexe. Certainċeċs ne se reconnaissent pas dans le classement binaire homme/femme opéré par les expertċeċs professionnelċleċs. Cependant, la population trans’ est hétérogène : variable selon le sexe assigné à la naissance, l’âge, la génération et le niveau d’éducation, les critiques et refus de participation proviennent de certains profils sociaux plus que d’autres. Attentif à cette pluralité, cet article donne des pistes pour permettre aux chercheursċeuses de naviguer en terrain trans’, tout en contribuant aux réflexions sur le point de vue situé et sur la catégorisation du sexe en sciences sociales.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128570004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dans le cadre de cette réflexion, nous examinerons les enjeux liés au recueil, au codage et à la numérisation des données de même que ceux liés à la protection et au partage des données dès lors que cela touche au suicide. En effet, comment normaliser une réflexion sur le suicide sans banaliser voire possiblement encourager ce dernier ? Comment parler respectueusement des personnes suicidées et de leur entourage ? Par exemple, quel sort doit-on réserver aux photographies des défunts et des lieux de décès ? En d’autres mots, nous nous interrogerons plus globalement sur notre rôle de chercheur, notamment à l’égard de celles et ceux qui se sont enlevés la vie sans penser qu’un jour leurs dernières paroles, leur dernier geste seraient analysés et mis à jour par notre équipe de recherche.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"133 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120876270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
