By considering traces of interactions in digital environments, it demonstrates the potential benefits of computational analysis in enhancing online ethnography. The application of quantitative methods, which may be unconventional in the field of ethnography, effectively complements qualitative understanding. Computational analysis of digital traces provides a valuable framework for observations within online ethnography. Through a case study of a Russian-speaking sociological online community, this article highlights the points where research questions intersect, fostering a dialogue between computational analysis of digital traces and online ethnography. It describes the implementation of methods such as content analysis, network analysis, and topic modeling, while also reflecting on their analytical capabilities within the context of online ethnography.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134976544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Journals with a high international profile can count on a large number of submissions and select articles that conform to the scientific canons that, for ease of reference, are referred to as “mainstream”. For “niche” journals such as the BMS (Duchesne et al., 2023), they have a specific editorial project that makes them less visible, but also requires them to be in contact with authors likely to respond to this editorial project. The best way to do this is to form partnerships with institutions or colleagues who can put the journal in direct contact with these authors. Historically, the BMS entered into a contract with RC33, the logic and methodology network of the International Sociological Association (ISA), at a time when the tools and techniques for collecting and analysing data in the social sciences were still of interest only to a very limited number of colleagues. This partnership continues, as shown by the autumn edition of the RC33 Newsletter published at the end of this issue. More recently, when Karl van Meter entrusted the journal to us and we refocused the editorial project on the reflexive narration of research experiences, we approached Nonna Mayer and Samy Cohen, who run a seminar at Sciences Po with a similar ambition. Together we created a section named after this seminar – ‘Social sciences in question’ – in which so far half a dozen articles have been published (Baczko, Dorronsoro and Quesnay, 2021; Cohen and Mayer, 2019; Coppedge et al., 2019; Fourment, 2019; de Maillard, 2019; Offerlé, 2019). A new article in this section, by Benjamin Tainturier, Charles de Dampierre and Dominique Cardon, also appears in this issue. The authors discuss how they attempted to measure anti-Semitic discourse on YouTube, using an ‘imprinting’ approach based on machine learning methods and the training of an automatic language processing tool. With the digitalisation of the world, but also the development and professionalisation of the social sciences, survey methods continue to diversify, so that the divide that structured their development – the opposition between qualitative and quantitative approaches – may now seem outdated. For a time, the notion of mixed methods was even interpreted by some qualitative researchers as an attempt to standardise their survey methods, inspired by the quantitative approach. But those days seem to be over. Today, the links between methods, apparently drawing on different epistemologies, seem to open the way to innovative and varied experimentation. In order to get closer to a pool of authors focusing on these issues, we gladly accepted an invitation from the three founders of the ARENES laboratory’s ‘Mixed Methods in the Social Sciences’ summer school, Thomas Aguilera, Tom Chevalier and Benoit Giry, to come and present the","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134977459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research proposes a method of hybrid probability sampling of social media ecosystems (collections of communities) using network theory, stratified sampling methods, theoretical saturation, and widely available social media activity statistics. Because of the unique venue of research, these methods create an opt-in sample, where every member of a community is given an equal chance to participate. The proposed methods were then used to obtain a sample representative of a digital political ecosystem with a population size of 8 million. The results illuminate stark polarization resulting from algorithmic opinion aggregation, with implications in online extremism, media literacy, demographic representation in public discourse, and more.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134976759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Une contribution méthodologique aux études sur les policy feedbacks depuis l'analyse secondaire de données qualitatives. Au cours des dix dernières années, les études sur les effets-retourdes politiques publiques sur les citoyen.nes (qu’on désigne par policy feedbacks) ont connu un regain d’intérêt. Analysant ces récents développements, plusieurs appels ont été lancés pour élargir ce courant de recherches au-delà des expériences que les citoyen.nes font d’une politique spécifique pour tenir compte, au contraire, de la multiplicité des expériences de politique publique qu'elles et ils ont au cours de leur vie quotidienne. Sur le plan méthodologique cependant, la reconnaissance de la multiplicité des expériences de politiques publiques des citoyen.nes en Europe de l'Ouest remet en question (i) les dispositifs empiriques de recherche et (ii) les inférences causales qui sont courantes dans cette littérature. Dans cet article, nous expliquons comment nous avons relevé ces deux défis en tirant parti des possibilités offertes par l’analyse secondaire qualitative. En réponse au premier défi, nous discutons notre approche, une analyse qualitative comparative et longitudinale de données secondaires sans sélection a priori des politiques publiques considérées. Nous présentons comment nous opérationnalisons dans ces données les expériences et les perceptions multiples des politiques publiques des citoyen.nes. En réponse au deuxième défi, nous construisons théoriquement un troisième mécanisme de feedback, qui est normatif et collectif. Nous discutons également de la manière dont nous étudions empiriquement les normes collectives liées aux expériences multiples de politique publique à partir de données individuelles.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132544121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This prize is intended to encourage the publication of articles on social science methods as we at BMS understand it: articles that describe, in a reflexive way, how we carry out our research, rather than texts that tell us how we should do it. Guy Michelat was a storyteller as well as an experimenter and he never tired of looking for ideas to better measure a phenomenon. In doing so, he made a major contribution to the renewal of political sociology in France, particularly in its electoral dimension, which earned him the honours of the French Association of Political Science. Guy took the time to consider the consequences of our ways of asking questions and analysing answers on what we can say about a phenomenon. He did not hesitate to innovate, to do things differently, drawing on methods from psychology in particular. His way of doing research inspires the current BMS editorial team, supported by the CED. The prize will be awarded every two years, but it will contain two awards. Firstly, the Junior Michelat Prize is reserved for colleagues who have defended their thesis less than five years before applying. It will be awarded to a proposal for an article (five pages or about 15,000 characters) corresponding to the BMS editorial policy. The journal’s board will assist the recipient in finalising the article, which will then be translated at the expense of the CED and published in BMS in English, together with the French version online, or vice versa. Secondly, the Michelat Senior Prize, with no age limit on the candidate, will be awarded to articles already completed. It will then be translated by the CED and published in BMS in both languages. The jury will be chaired by Nonna Mayer, former president of the AFSP and one of the first to have done the BMS in 2018 the honour of publishing an article on the making of its research (‘Qualitatif ou quantitatif? Plaidoyer pour l’éclectisme méthodologique’, BMS 139: 7–33). The members of the jury will come from the BMS editorial board. For the first edition, these will be Marc-André Bodet, Mathieu Brugidou, Jérémy Dodeigne, Sophie Duchesne, Claire Dupuy, Florent Gougou and Viviane Le Hay. They reflect in part the variety that the BMS seeks to promote, in terms of qualitative or quantitative sensitivity, more or less constructivist, and belonging to diverse academic and national contexts. The prize will be awarded on the occasion of the ‘Rencontres de l’AFSP’ in July 2023. Articles can be submitted in French or English.
