The case of theatre projects in working-class neighborhoods. Since the 2000s, there has been renewed reflection on the ways in which Social Scientists should look at the articulation between scales of data analysis and observation. Far from being fixed, these scales can evolve over the course of an investigation, through a dialectical relationship between data analysis and its progressive conceptualization. Based on these reflections, this article illustrates how the articulation between these scales was conceived in my PhD thesis. This comparative ethnographic research focused on theatre projects that took place in working-class neighborhoods and on the emergence of a professional ‘world’, at the intersection of urban and cultural policies, professional theatre, socio-cultural activities and social movements. An initial problem statement was possible thanks to the reading of numerous research works, but I widened my analytical focus following a series of observations in the field. This led me to readjust my methodological tools and to rely on the Beckerian concept of the ‘Art World’. However, some modification to this concept was also necessary in order to make it heuristic for my study. The Beckerian theory proved useful for my study as long as we take into account the existence of ‘power struggles’ between individuals who are differently positioned in the social space (public authorities, artists and related workers, social workers, etc.) and return individual interactions to their original social structure.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131135469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A survey of work in organic farming. Working on an object that has been little explored in sociological literature involves trial and error, which means that the approach to the field must be constantly rethought. This is the case with agricultural work, which has hardly been studied from the point of view of the activity and risks taken by the workers. The aim of this article is to describe the difficulties encountered during the production of Master and a PhD’s thesis on work in organic farming. The aim of this article is to show how, on the basis of a project dealing with occupational health among employees in diversified organic market gardening, the survey made it possible to reveal different work and employment configurations involving the opening up of the field of investigation to all organic vegetable production in the region studied.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"214 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117340849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Insights from a research on cooperative renewable energy projects in Europe. The search for causal explanations of social processes is a goal shared by many works in the social sciences. This article deals with this issue by showing how a multi-level comparison can contribute to the identification of causal mechanisms. Based on a research on cooperative renewable energy projects in Europe, I first highlight the tools that can be used to deal with the two challenges for identifying and conceptualizing the causal mechanisms: the dilemma of selecting units of analysis and the collection of empirical data, its analysis and explanation of the results. To deal with the issue of the selection of units of analysis, the universe of investigation of the object treated was distinguished, then three levels of analysis were selected to grasp both the structural and strategic dimensions of the observed phenomenon. To deal with the challenge of collecting and analysing the material, on the one hand, the empirical fingerprints were distinguished according to the levels of analysis, put in relation with four types of evidence via the method of process tracing and on the other hand, graphic representations were made to show the identified mechanisms. I then show that multi-level comparison makes it possible to specify the relationships between levels beyond the mechanisms of influence and circulation and that this type of comparison makes it possible to shed light on mechanisms that combine strategic dimensions and structural as well as cognitive mechanisms.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114495834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methodologically, one of the biggest challenges lay in dealing with its heavy-tailed distribution influenced by the growing separation between China and the United States from the rest of the world. In the presence of outliers along the continuum of military expenditure, we should be paying more attention to portions of the distribution that don’t assume the values reported at the conditional mean. The article uses quantile regression modelling (QRM) to analyse the nuanced relationship between military expenditure and its predictors. It argues that classical linear regression produces average estimates that cannot predict values at different subsets of the data’s distribution, meanwhile QRM has relevant results in the search for noncentral values in the study of military expenditure often laying in the lower and the upper tails of the distribution.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131453380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methodological feedback from the field. This article takes a reflective look at the collection and production of quantitative data from so-called “hidden” and hard-to-reach populations concerning intravenous drug use. It is based on observations of 152 questionnaires administered during the multidisciplinary RESEAU study. It discusses some of the difficulties encountered by the field investigator in establishing and developing a relationship of trust with the respondent, despite the obligatory mediation of professionals in order to establish contact. It also presents the difficulties of positioning the interviewer’s discourse, in tension between distance and advice. This article also exposes the existence of a gap between the technical explanation of practices and the intimate experience of users. Finally, it highlights the difficulties of managing ‘sensitive’ questions and conflicts in the survey relationship. This feedback from qualitative fieldwork within a quantitative questionnaire method highlights the complementarity of these methods and the benefits of their use.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123613436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on recent developments in Geometric Data Analysis (GDA), we combine the use of two distinct statistical techniques: Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) and Class Specific MCA (CSA). Specifically, the approach allows for the systematic investigation of three key aspects: (i) whether and how the dimensionality and the structure of primary axes of geometrical spaces have been stable or subject to change; (ii) how the oppositions depicted by the axes of such spaces have become weaker or stronger; and (iii), how the connection between cultural divisions and class divisions has developed over time. Our exemplary case is Norway and the data stem from five different rounds of The Culture and Media Survey, conducted by Statistics Norway between 2000 and 2016.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121611936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analysis and comparison of eight automatic transcription platforms. This article compares the functionalities and results of eight automatic transcription platforms (Go Transcribe, Happy Scribe, Headliner, Sonix, Video Indexer, Vocalmatic, Vocapia and YouTube), for audio samples in French. We propose an original methodology, designed through an interdisciplinary work, to compare the transcriptions. It combines three complementary approaches: (1) a quantitative approach which compares the textual outcomes using a common metric, the Word Error Rate (WER), (2) a fine-grained approach to classify and understand the errors generated by the platforms, and finally (3) an approach estimating the amount of transcription time which can be saved for each file on each platform. We show that no platform surpassed the others for all the samples, but two nevertheless stood out: Vocapia and Sonix, each with their own areas of expertise. Regardless of the type of file or platform, listening and correcting the text remains a necessary step. However the use of such tools can save up to 75% of time compared with manual transcription. Yet, the use of these online tools can create major problems relating to data confidentiality and security. Finally, we reflect on the interdisciplinary setting that made this project possible.","PeriodicalId":210053,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114909417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
