While Extension traditionally focused on agriculture, health and human sciences, 4-H and youth development, and community development, a collective of Arts Extension professionals also discovered Extension’s long, continuous history of arts engagement. Since the 1920s,Extension personnel have integrated the arts as creative strategies to engage participants through high-quality community efforts. This manuscript is an initial attempt to understand a regional perspective on Arts Extension work. First, the authors provide a chronological overview of the history of Arts Extension within the Midwestern region to explore the nuance of arts integration within the Cooperative Extension system. Then, they shift to highlight current community Arts Extension models in four Midwestern states to establish a preliminary foundation for future understanding of how modern approaches in Arts Extension contribute to local community development.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121556962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This case study explores how the Deep Ellum district has endeavored to keep art, music, culture and history at the center of how the community develops. Several local organizations have organized and channeled the efforts of property and businesses owners, residents and patrons invested in the neighborhood to amplify a shared vision. What makes the joint efforts authentic and robust are the cross-sector engagement and longstanding commitment to Deep Ellum of the stakeholders involved. Strategic planning and an increasingly integrated network of local organizations could not create but merely serve to leverage the passion, artistic contribution, and resource investment already present. The district demonstrates that consistency and collaboration across a variety of stakeholder types can help keep the arts at the center of the neighborhoods’ development.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126453892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the voices of the many authors, we can deepen our understanding of the ways in which these two areas blend, and through this amalgamation, we see that this cohesion can achieve significant outcomes. The book covers three main components: public outreach and civic engagement; place-focused aspects including community development and cultural districts; and arts education as a tool for social cohesion. The threats of deindustrialization, a stagnant economy, unemployment, poor public health, declining social mobility, inequality, and polarization have made small cities the epicenter of a declining heartland. This study used multiple regression to analyze data from 50 cities to examine the role of leadership, social networks, civic engagement, polarization, and the built environment in thriving cities compared to those in distress. The results provide evidence of success of small cities in the heartland. Thriving cities have a densely built environment, multigenerational leadership, and high social capital. The results have implications for local leaders working to improve the quality of place in small cities. The results fortify the need for civic leadership in places that have struggled to be competitive with higher quality peers.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116239348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the lens of agenda-setting theory, this research explores the content of newspaper articles to understand the ongoing challenges in the agricultural sector to frame the necessary policy-agenda for Bangladesh, Canada, and Trinidad Tobago. Qualitative content analysis was applied to analyze systematically selected news articles. The findings indicate several key challenges, such as disruption in supply chain and market, scarcity of farmworkers and their safety issues, dearth of cooperation and collaboration, and wastage of farm produces. The study proposes specific policy agenda for each country and argues that developing the capacity and resilience of the food system requires more cooperation between various actors than pre-COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130788094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Herein, a dispersed Philippine fisherfolk community defined by fish-stocks is engaged to elucidate consensus that can support participatory educational programming. A Cultural Consensus Model is characterized within transdisciplinary Participatory Action Research and Learning on sustainable fisheries and poverty mitigation. The bioregional fisherfolk epistemology on Coastal Resource Management as outlined supports food security. Results present an example for national and international applications using social artistry for curriculum development through a government and non-government organization partnership. Recognizing traditional fisherfolk artisanal epistemologies within professional and paraprofessional Ecohealth certification can support mitigation of chronic poverty and promote sustainability through an ecocentric-anthropocentric balance. This Philippine meta-level change mechanism for SSF could also contribute directly to the need for Indigenous and other local input on governing the global-ocean commons.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131611084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Land – including its associated natural resources, such as water, minerals, and forests – is central to local development activities in many natural resource dependent societies. It is a source of community heritage, group and individual livelihoods options, the basis for environmental health, and communal identities. Wherever they occurred, historical land dispossessions have desta-bilized societies’ resilience (Throne, 2021). This is the situation in Namibia – a country where the privileges earned from historical land dispossession coexists with the sufferings of the dispossessed. The scope of land reform needed to reduce the negative societal consequences of the historical injustices caused by colonial land injustices and neocolonial land governance laxities is ever increasing. Probing such historical dispossessions of land has always allowed scholars to understand the best possible ways to reform the experiences people have faced in the past to better the future. Hence, the search for multifaceted tools (or approaches or strategies or methods) to ensure that current and emerging land reforms address these challenges in ways that quickly respond to local realities through fit-for-purpose land administration (Chigbu, Bendzko, Mabakeng, Kuusaana, & Tutu, 2021). However, no scholar has painstakingly investigated the communal land reform (and its associated societal challenges) in Namibia more than Romie Vonkie Nghitevelekwa (hereafter called the author). In this book, the author provides excellent documentation of Namibia’s land reform beyond what has become the mere recount of the country’s national struggles over land access, land (re)distribution, and security of land tenure. The study aims to explore the process of stigmatization and the extent of social vulnerabilities affected COVID -19 people of Bangladesh. The study used purposive sampling, where a total of 15 different cases were selected from 11 online newspapers in Bangladesh. Results revealed that infected and suspected patients were largely stigmatized through local hatred and eviction, forced quarantining, impeding burial process, hospital and local administration’s mistreating, family-negligence, relatives’ avoidance, and the land owners’ disgracing. The excessive media coverage of maintaining lockdown, quarantining, and physical distance were the major causes of increasing rumor where the poor-income group, female workers, and employees of health-care services were seriously vulnerable. Preparing youth for active participation in a diverse democracy entails supporting the development of diverse social relationships with a particular focus on providing experiences that stimulate positive intergroup contact between individuals from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. This paper outlines a conceptual model from which to understand the complex relationships between intergroup contact, social capital, and civic engagement. Of particular interest is the way in which intergroup contact can bring about changes in attitudes and behaviors relevant to youth civic engagement through the mediating factors of cultural awareness, prejudice reduction, awareness of systemic inequality, and social capital. In considering how these factors support one another and interact to encourage a trajectory of civic growth for diverse democracy, one can recognize and demonstrate a higher relational value of youth civic engagement.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115136698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
