While there is literature examining the role residents can play in the co-creation and co-production, little has been done to examine the relationship between residents’ “civic pride” and the brand, or lack thereof, in their community. We developed case studies on two northern Kentucky communities, Bellevue and Ludlow, examining their attempts to create a brand, and surveyed residents in both communities on their views of “civic pride” and the current branding in their community. In general, we found that residents in Bellevue, which has a brand, had a much more prideful view of their community compared to those residents in Ludlow, which lacked a brand.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127214703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These farmers face numerous difficulties in accessing formal credits. Due to limited access to formal credit, rural farmers are increasingly resorting to sourcing informal credits from community-based organizations (CBOs). Using qualitative data drawn from 24 in-depth interviews with officials of CBOs and nine focus group discussion sessions with experienced rural farmers, we examined how CBOs operate as savings and credit organizations, the impacts of the informal credits provided by the CBOs on rural farmers and the challenges of CBOs. The study revealed that CBOs are increasingly becoming a major provider of credit facilities to rural farmers in Southeast Nigeria. Through investments, savings and credit activities, the CBOs increase their capitals and make them available for loan. Our findings are useful for evidence-informed policy decisions.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130866576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Everyone has wants and needs, feelings and thoughts; painful and pleasant experiences. Despite this common undercurrent, it is widely recognized that the train of global growth leaves many individuals and communities behind. The world is fractured. A new perspective on aid, the localization of hearts accompanied by the globalization of minds and material resources, can help it heal. This article briefly outlines the dimensions that underpin individual and collective experiences, before proceeding with the consequences of this perspective on the present aid landscape. A new paradigm is offered to provide the theoretical basis for a different approach to compassionate giving in a post-COVID world.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122432874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prevailing concept of development – almost exclusively economic – inevitably produces massive exclusion, inside every society and among nations, on all continents. The depletion of the current development model is associated with instability and violence. This requires a new global vision putting in dialogue top-down and bottom-up perspectives, and a shift in the way policies and measures are shaped and in how political decisions and public policies are made. The support of democratization and basic freedoms by heartening broad contribution in political decision-making and local ownership is pondered as key to sustainable development (European Commission, n/d), the basis of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129951620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of the Special Issue is to present articles – empirical, theoretical, policy-essays and cases – applying two research methods: quantitative and qualitative. The fact that the articles have been written by authors – academics, researchers – from different parts of the planet, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, allows for a more global perspective, by exhibiting the different social, cultural, and political diversities of social sustainability and peace for local development. It also takes into account the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve this aim, we shall begin by making a theoretical review of these three concepts from a multidimensional and interdisciplinary perspective, respecting the diversity of the different contexts. During the last 30 years of the Twentieth Century, the discussion of sustainable development was focused on the need to secure a more wholesome natural environment for future generations; yet, it was at the end of the XX century that the international community began to acknowledge the fact that – apart from environmental protection – the central aim had to be the enhancement of human capabilities, together with the improvement of the population’s quality of life. Human development, understood as an equitable and permanent improvement of human quality, was regarded as an end in itself – for the advance of human development, would ensure a more wholesome relationship with the external environment (Anand & Sen, 2000). Biggeri and Ferrannini (2014) define development as multidimensional, multilevel, and dynamic processes, involving multistakeholder as well as multiple local and extra-local relations; for every local development strategy particularly calls for dialogue, consensus of all the political actors, collaboration from different levels of public administration, as well as from the joint work of public and private sectors (Di Pietro Paolo, 2003). It is crucial to acknowledge that local development does not simply depend on local efforts; effective development trajectories can be pursued only if various levels are involved and aligned toward the achievement of common goals (Biggeri & Ferrannini, 2014).","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121841159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, there is a growing consensus, among different social and institutional actors, on the need to find sustainable productive alternatives. Some proposals, such as “sustainable agriculture”, “organic agriculture” or “agroecological agriculture”, provide ideas to contribute to local development, promoting harmonious relations between social actors and nature. This article explores alternative proposals for extensive agricultural and horticultural farming in the district of General Pueyrredon, Buenos Aires, Argentina, inquiring about the continuities, controversies and conflicts generated by its coexistence. Previous research was collected and semi-structured interviews were conducted with key informants and farmers. The “alternative” proposals promote the maintenance of ecological foundations, the well-being of society and individual and collective peace. The development of solutions meets some proposals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127918443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The international community has early recognized sport as a means to achieve peaceful coexistence and promote healthy lifestyles. Modern mega sporting events, in particular, often express the policy orientations of a social conjuncture, in dialog with the realities imposed by globalization. At the same time, mega sporting events help to establish positive discursive links at a global level, achieving consensus on key political issues. In this sense, the United Nations works to promote – among the Member States – sports initiatives that allow synergy with the goals proposed in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, paying special attention to the contributions of sports practices in what they have to do with: alleviation of poverty, improvement on universal education, achievement of gender equality, prevention of diseases, commitment to environmental sustainability, guarantee of peace, and achievement of peaceful resolution of conflicts. Taking the above into account, this article aims to offer the reader a theoretical reflection that immerses itself in the potential of sport as a catalyst for sustainable local development and peace. In order to accomplish that, the unique experience of the City of Buenos Aires (Argentina) as host of the Youth Olympic Games during 2018 will be reviewed, selecting those issues that would allow recognizing this edition of the youth games as an initiative for local development and for the promotion of values in pursuit of sustainability.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115074173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The global pandemic highlights inequalities in the United States from health inequality to social inequalities. Institutional philanthropy can focus on doing more than giving money; organization leaders and program staff can deliberately engage and listen to communities and the public to drive systems change. This commentary examines the role of philanthropic foundations and philanthropic support organizations regarding advocacy, public policy and community listening when philanthropy has been asked to step up to deliver increased funding given the increases in COVID-19 cases and deaths in minority communities in light of the toll the pandemic has taken on minority communities, the unjust death of George Floyd and others and the Black Lives Matters movement. Philanthropic foundation leaders are faced with “the fierce urgency of now” to change organizational behavior from the relational to meaningful community engagement and social cohesion.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126965442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
