They are also, by definition, locally unique. How might advocates of local food systems (LFSs) evaluate the complicated expectations, hopes, and perceptions of those who reside within these systems? In this manuscript, we demonstrate a generalizable survey approach that involves collecting residential perspectives to understand food system performance. We use survey responses from 13 diversely sized and structured communities in the Southeastern United States to understand residents’ 1) awareness of and 2) performance evaluations for 21 different aspects of their local food systems. We use probit and ordered probit models, respectively, to conceptualize how different place-based demographic and geographic characteristics impact these perceptions. By bringing consumer perspectives into view, LFS development personnel and other stakeholders may better understand where their residents place value within their unique systems.KEYWORDS: Local food systemslocal food metrics Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Notes1. For each LFS aspect, the respondent was asked “How would you rate the performance of the following aspect of your community’s local food environment.” They were given the option to provide a performance score from 1 to 5 with 1 = Very Poor; 2 = Poor; 3 = Average; 4 = Good; 5 = Excellent; and 0 = Don’t Know.5. We decided to remove some of the more niche aspects of LFS as they were not relevant to or do not exist in some of the communities we surveyed.6. The question was phrased “Please rate your general interest in locally grown or processed food items.” The options were given on a 5-point Likert scale with 1 = Not Interested; 3 = Somewhat Interested; 5 = Very Interested. We recoded this to a binary variable where values 1 to 3 = 0 and values 4 to 5 = 1.7. In other words, if a person selected “Don’t Know” or left the question blank, this was coded as 0. Any other performance score (i.e. 1–5) was coded as 1.8. Although changes have been precipitated by various forces, including the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the country’s third-sector organizations have been (re)generated through the creation of a productive urban commons. Notwithstanding a vibrant landscape of activity and opportunities, the environment continues to challenge sector entities. Utilizing interviews with 19 sector professionals, our research question focuses on examining current perceptions on the sector’s development, contemporary status and challenges, and future potential. Accordingly, the paper aims to 1) account for some of the political, socio-economic, and ideological shifts in the evolution and priorities of Greece’s Third sector; 2) explore industry experiences in the pursuit of individual and collective civil society agendas; and 3) establish some directions of, and challenges to, organizational continuity and change. Our findings suggest that collaborative efforts illustrate the sector’s progressive capacities, yet these are measured against enduring sustainability concerns.KEYWORDS: Greececivil society developmenturban commonsvolunteeringorganizational continuity Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Notes1. Corporate misanthropy entails an entrenched economic and political desire by corporate or State entities to maintain prevailing hegemonies that protect establishment interests, principles, and goals above all else (e.g. stated altruistic, or humanitarian, commitments). The term also comprises the deliberate (mis)use and abuse of philanthropy (and its corollary, corporate social responsibility) to obfuscate, deflect, ameliorate the deleterious consequences of corporate undertakings (e.g. Fair, Citation2021; Lechterman, Citation2021; Maniates, Citation2019). Relatedly tied to civil society are, also, tangible alignments here with the various discourses around organizational “washing” (e.g. “greenwashing,” “sportswashing,” “genderwashing”), in which commercial, State, and philanthropic stakeholders engage in various acts to masque misanthropic behaviors and actions (see, for example, Boykoff (Citation2022), Fox-Kirk et al. (Citation2020), and Miller and Maxwell (Citation2017)).Additional informationFundingThis work was supported by the Olympic Studies Centre-International Olympic Committee.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135758945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and with economic, ecological, and social crises intensifying, these systems are being exposed as inefficient, ineffective, and unjust. Policymakers have therefore begun exploring Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a potential alternative. This is leading to rising interest in basic income trials, with pilots proposed or in the pipeline in many countries, including Scotland and Wales. However, pilots are often designed without meaningful community participation, which raises significant ethical and practical concerns. Through a series of qualitative workshops in Jarrow, one of the most deprived areas in the UK and an archetypal target for “Leveling Up” policy, we explored and categorized local concerns, hopes, and suggestions for piloting basic income in the area. This article presents those findings and thereby builds the knowledge base around community perspectives on local basic income pilots.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136212990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The U.S. Department of Defense’s Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) program was explicitly designed to combat these intergovernmental challenges at the local level. This descriptive study engages community stakeholders from 55 JLUS sites across the United States to perform the first ex-post evaluation of the program. A stakeholder survey is used to measure the perceived performance and conformance of the plans sponsored by this program. The evaluation criteria examined include the program’s ability to progress regional democratic participation, intergovernmental cooperation, military readiness, and compatible civilian development. Discussions in this study highlight the program’s successes, where it can be improved, and how community leaders can facilitate military installation compatibility with urban societies.KEYWORDS: Local developmentUrban policyland use Planningprogram evaluationintergovernmental relations AcknowledgementsI extend my thanks to all the community stakeholders that contributed to this study for their participation, especially to those currently or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. For rural communities with narrow prospects for dramatic, high-dollar development opportunities, the framework provides a promising alternative strategy, allowing communities to focus instead on the smaller, incremental approaches that can slowdown economic decline and potentially lead toward sustainable renewal. In this paper, we use a wide assortment of publicly available data sources to quantify each type of capital across a study area of 1,442 counties in 17 states. We then employ a set of OLS regression models to estimate the relationship between community capital levels and county job creation rates from 2010 to 2019. Our results highlight numerous findings with implications for how rural counties may adjust their approach toward community development.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"224 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135203401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More specifically, the effect of LEOs party affiliation on the perceived problems associated with early voter registration by mail, same-day voter registration/automatic voting, and no-excuse absentee voting in Michigan by analyzing the responses of 1342 LEOs. The results reveal that the party affiliation of LEOs has no influence on the perceived problems associated with implementing Proposal 3 electoral reforms in Michigan. Additionally, it was revealed that long waiting times, inaccurate voter lists, poll worker error, government support to improve election security, and the size of the population were significant predictors. These results provides support for the rational and institutional perspective on explaining electoral reforms. A detailed discussion of the results, direction for future studies, and limitations was done. Overall, the current study has enormous theoretical and practical significance.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129363914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Communication is essential for local and agricultural development, and the appropriate use of communication approaches promotes development. Two types of data were used: the providers of extension services (state extension, research institutions, and non-government organizations) and the clients of extension services (a sample of 364 farm households and three focus group discussions with progressive farmers). The results found the state extension communicated with farmers using top-down approaches. The communication approaches used by state agricultural extension services were not in line with government policy. Agricultural technologies generated by research institutions were diffused to farmers in a one-way approach. However, non-government organizations used more integrated situation-based two-way communication approaches. The use of communication approach that promotes farmers’ participation was recommended as a way to improve extension service delivery.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124176796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article explores the strategic nature and relevancy of firm-centric brand storytelling to localized entrepreneurship and local development through a qualitative single case study of an Arizona craft brewery. Data originated from a label catalog consisting of 137 unique designs and nearly 40 hours of semi-structured and unstructured interviews with the brewery founder and lead designer. Drawing on visual design storytelling and iconology, analysis revealed how firm-centric branding can be strategically deployed to create local consumption spaces in which consumers can develop deeper and more intimate connections with localized firms within their home communities and locales. The local consumption space developed from firm-centric brand storytelling is characterized by the following features: idiosyncrasy, inclusivity, interconnectedness, and unfolding development. Recommendations for future research and strategic practice by localized entrepreneurs are provided.","PeriodicalId":208905,"journal":{"name":"Local Development & Society","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122681371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
