Its main features are: use of Maple as the engine and implementation language; several methods of giving partial credit; various feedback mechanisms; randomisation of quizzes and questions; versatility in question and quiz design; extensive grade reporting and monitoring capabilities; ability to collect surveys; web interface for both teacher and student. AIM can be used to administer graded tests, homeworks or ungraded self-assessment exercises. A case study using vector calculus was conducted and more courses are being planned for September 2000, including linear algebra, ODEs and precalculus. Preparation is also under way to use AIM to mark a part of the final exam for linear algebra in February 2001.","PeriodicalId":208449,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Workshop on Advanced Learning Technologies. However, in the last decade relevant literature has maintained that most educational software does not meet its promise. One of the reasons for the lack of educational software of high quality is that educational research cannot keep pace with the advances of technology and as a result existing evaluation methods are often inadequate. Yet, in the past fifteen years a number of important issues emerged from research on instructional design and system evaluation that can be used from evaluators of educational software. This paper is an attempt to integrate some of these.","PeriodicalId":208449,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Workshop on Advanced Learning Technologies. IWALT 2000. The basic components and characteristics of the approach are described. The UNIVERSAL brokerage platform is an interactive hypermedia environment offered to the academics and administrators of European educational institutions to plan and select courses. It decouples offers and course units provision on the supply side from enquiry, booking and delivery on the demand side. The most important element that enable this decoupling is the catalogue of offered educational material and the supporting processes, that adequately describes all the properties, educational and technological of the course units.","PeriodicalId":208449,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Workshop on Advanced Learning Technologies. Writing is no longer seen as a solitary task where the writer struggles to complete his work all by himself. This view of writing has prompted the establishment of writing centres or labs in institutions of higher learning in technologically advanced countries. Such writing centres have been set up with the aim of providing one-to-one consultation to beginning writers across the curriculum in a myriad of writing tasks and at various stages of their writing. The paper aims to discuss practices of OWLs in general, and to highlight various aspects writing practitioners can gain from a commendable OWL in particular. Since the early 90s, with the advancement in computer and telecommunication technologies, many of such OWLs have extended their services online via a computer network. Such online services differ in the extent, from the most sophisticated full-fledged OWLs that offer services completely online to pseudo OWLs that use the WWW to merely advertise their physical presence. With the birth of OWLs, students have the option to submit their writing drafts online usually via e-mail, ask questions online, or access the online resources or links on various writing helps.","PeriodicalId":208449,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Workshop on Advanced Learning Technologies.
