It can be seen that low English ability can be an obstacle in some situations. In this case, lectures should prepare themselves with good English ability. The design of this research was descriptive. The aims of this research were to describe the lecturers’ perception in using English in teaching and the reasons of that perception. The data were taken from the lecturers in Padang and analyzed based on some experts. Instruments of this research were questionnaire, interview, and recording. The results showed that the lecturers’ perception in using English in teaching were 31% stated strongly agree, 48% stated agree, 13.5% stated neutral, 7% stated disagree and 0.6% stated very disagree. Therefore, a module need to be developed as one of the teaching materials to solve these problems. The purpose of this study was aimed at describing the process of developing a problem-based learning module (problem based learning) for the material of writing exposition paragraphs for X grade students of SMA N 8 Padang. It also was aimed at producing a problem-based learning module (problem based learning) for the material of writing exposition paragraphs for X grade students of SMA N 8 Padang that was valid, practical, and effective. This research was a Research and Development (R & D) using the 4D development model (define, design, develop, disseminate). The subjects of this research were 27 students of grade X of SMA N 8 Padang. The instruments of this research were the validation sheet of the problem-based learning module, the practicality questionnaire of the problem-based learning module, the performance test of the problem-based learning module, and the student observation sheet. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The number of population were 461 students. The data were collected through interview. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that the problems encountered by the students were the students had less practice in answering HOTS questions, the students do not have enough time to thoughtfully complete the test and the students found many unfamiliar vocabularies. Besides, to find out the causes of students’ problems in answering HOTS questions, the researcher also used semi structure interview. {"title":"The Criticizing Strategies by the National Campaign Team (TKN) and the National Winning Agency (BPN) in the 2019 Presidential Election Debate","authors":"Nurul Rahmadani, Agustina","doi":"10.2991/assehr.k.200819.056","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2991/assehr.k.200819.056","url":null,"abstract":"This research was motivated by the dominant use of criticism by TKN and BPN in the 2019 Presidential Election Debate. Therefore, this research aims to: (1) uncover the types of criticizing strategies used by TKN and BPN, and (2) to explain and describe the use of criticizing strategies in the 2019 Presidential Election Debate. The source of this research data was the verbal utterances sourced from the 2019 Presidential Election Debate video. The data was collected by downloading the debate video on YouTube, then it was transcribed. Based on the listening and the note technique, TKN and BPN’s utterances which were criticized were identified, then it was classified and analyzed based on the research objectives. Based on the results of the data analysis, it was found that the TKN and BPN used three types of criticizing strategies, namely direct, indirect, and mixed criticism. From the 182 data found, there were 107 data which were direct criticism, 64 data which were indirect criticism, and 11 data which were mixed criticism. The use of direct strategy is more dominant, in three main forms, which were negative evaluation, statement of the problem, and rejection. Based on the observation, the students’ still have lack of vocabulary. There are various teaching methods have been offered by the experts, one of them is through of word games. Word games mostly used as it can motivate your learners English. Therefore, this paper explore how word games can be used to improve students’ vocabulary mastery at elementary school level. This study applied classroom action research by using two cycles to find how word games increase the vocabulary mastery of the English language learner at elementary school. The results of pre-cycle show that the score of leaners’ vocabulary mastery is 59 before the treatment. After implementing word game in teaching, the score of the students’ is increased into 68.6. Then, the score in average is increased into 81.7 in the second cycle. Based on these data, the average scores of students are getting improved after they were taught by using word games. Based on the scores obtained, it indicates that the achievement of the students' vocabulary mastery is getting better. It can be concluded that word games can be used to improve the vocabulary mastery. Moreover, word games is also able to attract students’ interest and motivation.
