In particular, probabilistic methods are being actively explored in models of spiking neural processing systems for enabling noisy and low-precision hardware neuromorphic computing architectures to implement state-of-the-art recognition and inference systems. It is therefore important to develop suitable sources of stochastic behavior for these neural processing systems that will allow them to maintain their compact and low-power benefits. Here we present a mixed-mode analog-digital circuit that can be used to control the amount of variability produced by event-based spiking neural networks, which exploits the inherent device-mismatch properties of the analog circuits used in combination with the spiking nature of the neural network. We characterize the properties of the circuit presented and demonstrate its applicability in a neuromorphic processor device comprising 256 adaptive integrate and fire neurons and 256 × 256 dynamic synapses.","PeriodicalId":205556,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS)","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134292523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, UPA schemes are usually designed without taking into account the High Power Amplifier (HPA) nonlinearity, especially in MIMO-OFDM systems which are known to generate signals with a high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR). This paper aims to evaluate the impact of HPA nonlinearity on the transmission of scalable image cotents over a precoded Closed-Loop MIMO-OFDM system when the well-known Content-Based Precoder (CBP) is used for UPA. For PAPR reduction, we have considered the Tone Reservation Using Null Subcarriers (TRNS) technique. Simulations are performed under the IEEE 802.11n standard in a realistic urban environment in presence of a commercial 2W class-AB memoryless HPA from RF Micro Devices. The experimental results in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) and visual quality show that the error-protection of the most sensitive parts of the codestream against channel distortions achieved using UPA is significantly disturbed in presence of HPA nonlinearity. These results highlight the influence of HPA nonlinearity on the scalable image transmission.","PeriodicalId":205556,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS)","volume":"106 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133169761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that this new technique, based on the inclusion of the Guard Interval (GI) signal into the well-known Tone Reservation using Null-Subcarriers (TRNS) technique can significantly increase the PAPR reduction gain. In this paper, we propose to extend the performance evaluation of the HTR technique over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels in presence of a RF Power Amplifier (PA) model with memory effects. Simulation were carried out under the IEEE 802.11a standard in presence of a commercial 2W class-AB PA from RF Micro Devices. The model parameters of the considered PA were estimated by an experimental based method. The evaluation results in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER), Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) an spectral regrowth show that this new technique allows using the PA at high output level and consequently high power efficiency, while maintaining a good transmission quality compared to the classical TRNS method. These results highlight the performances of this technique in presence of PA nonlinearity.","PeriodicalId":205556,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134336285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to carry out such applications in other frequency domains, the instantaneous frequency of the impulse signal is commonly used. This paper describes the design of an Instantaneous Frequency Measurement system in order to show its feasibility for Ultra-WideBand impulse radio radar and imaging applications. The integrated part of the system is constituted of a full-wave rectifier, a delay cell and an analog multiplier. These devices were designed in CMOS 130 nm technology and consumes 95.6 mW for a supply voltage of 1.2V. The post-layout simulations are shown in comparison to theoretical Matlab simulations in order to validate the proposed technique.","PeriodicalId":205556,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS)","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115583720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Equally important, body sensors are more and more used in the medical, sports and space research fields. For instance, the breathing and heart rate signals fluctuate in the 0.5 to 5 Hz frequency range while several of the common biophysiological signals are situated between the 0.1 to 1 kHz spectrum like the electrooculography (EOG), the electroencephalography (EEG), the electrocardiogram (ECG), the electromyography (EMG). In this paper, an active low-pass filter using very high linear pseudo-resistors is presented. The pseudo-resistors allow the realization of very large resistances using small silicon area. More importantly, our proposed linearization technique provides tunable pseudo-resistors with very high linearity measured thanks to the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output signal. Simulations results show that the proposed circuit's cutoff frequency is tunable in a wide range from 34 Hz to 20 kHz. In other words, we we were able to achieve a resistance value as high as 0.46 GO for a THD of −60 dB or 0.1%. Comparatively, for a cutoff frequency of 141 Hz and equivalent resistance of 0.11 GO, our filter achieves a THD as high as −83 dB or 0.007%.","PeriodicalId":205556,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124974781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to its high parallelism, the hardware implementation of large-scale spiking neural networks (SNNs) promises superior execution speed compared to sequential software approaches. Such systems can significantly benefit from the use of networks-on-chip(NoC), as they scale very well concerning area, performance, power/energy consumption, and overall design effort. We developed a hierarchical network-on-chip for a hardware SNN architecture to improve the communication and scalability of the system. The architecture was implemented in an Altera Stratix IV FPGA, and a logic synthesis was performed to evaluate the system, achieving an area of 0.23mm2 and a power dissipation of 147mW for a 256 neurons implementation.","PeriodicalId":205556,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115569076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus of the work is unity-gain bandwidth optimization, which is achieved by means of a procedure based on numerical analysis that allows determining the optimum sizing of op-amp transistors and the compensation capacitance as well as the best splitting of the allowed bias current between the two stages. The paper also provides a simplified algebraic solution for the case of large capacitive loads. The results from the proposed optimization procedure are compared to circuit simulation.","PeriodicalId":205556,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS)","volume":"237 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122980060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present for the first time the fundamental interdependencies between bandwidth, sample rate, the number of samples, and the local oscillator frequencies for ABI-DACs. Furthermore, a mathematical expression for the splitting of the digital signal among multiple DACs is presented. In addition, most practical systems introduce supplementary nonlinearity to improve their performance. Qualitatively and quantitatively understanding the nonlinear behaviour in these devices can highlight important parameters with regard to optimisation and design. Capacitive energy harvesters require an initial electrical bias, resulting in electromechanical coupling. Thus, the electromechanical transducer force is present in all capacitive harvesters. It is the cause of numerous well studied phenomena, such as the modification of the resonant frequency, for alternative bias voltages. The effects of the coupling in two of the most common conditioning circuit configurations has been described and compared with experimental results. Furthermore, semi-analytical analysis of the coupled systems has been completed, giving further insight into the behaviour and potential optimisations.","PeriodicalId":205556,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128704064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
