There is a special interest that these services can be introduced into the second-generation mobile communications systems, so a smooth evolution toward the third-generation can be achieved. The principal challenges are concerned with the radio interface, where the packet reservation multiple access (PRMA) scheme operating under different digital modulation techniques is introduced. The feasibility analysis is realized through simulation. A comparison with the GSM system (a second-generation system) in terms of user capacity, bit error rate and channel access delay is accomplished. The same traffic load was used for all the systems, so a direct comparison can be done.","PeriodicalId":205350,"journal":{"name":"ITS'98 Proceedings. We present discrete channel (DC) models for wireless services, which are based upon nested hidden Markov models (HMM) and take into account soft decision outputs. It is shown that realistic DC models based upon GSM and CDMA radio channels without FEC may have a relatively large number of channel states. The sequence of erroneous frames after decoding in most practical cases may be accurately represented by one-error-state Fritchman models. DC model parameters for ARQ and hybrid FEC-ARQ schemes are presented.","PeriodicalId":205350,"journal":{"name":"ITS'98 Proceedings. SBT/IEEE International Telecommunications Symposium (Cat. This algorithm possesses two main steps, that are repeated until the obtained image approaches the medium axis of the original image. In the first step the contour of the image is marked and in the second step the contour marked is analysed to verify which pixels-on belonging to this contour should be deleted. The FTA algorithm maintains the connectivity and preserves the end points of the final image of the skeleton. It is practically immune to noise and, of extreme importance, has a shorter execution time. Several tests are carried out and the results obtained are very satisfactory.","PeriodicalId":205350,"journal":{"name":"ITS'98 Proceedings. SBT/IEEE International Telecommunications Symposium (Cat. The considered scalability of coded video sequences is based on variations of data partitioning and requantization techniques. These variations contemplate situations in which the reference signal used in predicted (P-type) or interpolated (B-type) frames is based on the full coded signal, or alternatively, based only on the high-priority signal. Also considered are variations of data partitioning with a fixed number of spectral coefficients. The signals relating to the two scales are to be transmitted over a channel formed by a high-priority link, with no loss of cells, and a low-priority, lossy link. The results of transmission over packet networks with various levels of cell loss rate are presented and a few conclusions are drawn.","PeriodicalId":205350,"journal":{"name":"ITS'98 Proceedings. The proposed algorithm combines a linear predictive analysis together with the Mel psychoacoustical perceptual scale. The algorithm was tested for the first 2 formants and produced good performance for male and female speakers, adults and children. In contrast to the classical LPC algorithm which requires variable-order prediction filters to take into account different formant patterns, the proposed algorithm is capable of extracting these formants with a fixed-order prediction filter.","PeriodicalId":205350,"journal":{"name":"ITS'98 Proceedings. The inclusion of loss results in the increase of the critical power of the coupler while the switching characteristics deteriorate. To compensate for this behavior associated with the loss, we investigate the effect of the nonlinearity profile on the performance of an increasing nonlinearity coupler. We have shown that appropriate shaping of the nonlinear self-phase modulation profile is quite effective in recovering, almost completely, the original switching behavior associated with the lossless situation. It is concluded that the exponential nonlinearity profile is nearly optimum for the recovery of the lossless switching behavior.","PeriodicalId":205350,"journal":{"name":"ITS'98 Proceedings.
