How long the seed persists depends on its physical and physiological characteristics as well as on biotic and abiotic environmental conditions. In alien species, the ability to develop a persistent seed bank is associated with their ability to naturalize and become invasive. We carried out an experiment to find out how long the seeds of Heracleum mantegazzianum, one of the most invasive monocarpic species in Europe, are able to persist in soil and explore the effect of environmental conditions on seed depletion over a long period of time. The seeds were buried at 10 localities in different regions of the Czech Republic to cover a range of climatic, edaphic and geographic conditions. After seven years of burial, 0.1% of the seed of H. mantegazzianum, averaged across the localities, were viable, and none survived at five localities, at one of which the seed bank was completely depleted after five years and at one already after two years. The highest recorded survival at the end of the burial period was 0.5% of seed. In general, the average seed-bank survival was very low after five years and never exceeded 1%. We found a significant correlation between the percentage seed bank depletion and the content of total carbon and organic carbon; the effects of other soil characteristics, climatic and geographical factors were not significant. High percentages of seed persisted after the first year at localities with a low carbon content but the percentage depletion after seven years was slower at localities with a high carbon content. In addition, low carbon content and high seed survival after the first year was recorded at localities with nutrient poor soils. The course of seed bank depletion in H. mantegazzianum corresponds to its classification as short-term persistent. Therefore, monitoring well beyond the reported period of seed bank persistence is recommended after full eradication of this species from a site.

The ploidy, genetic and\u0000morphological separation of both taxa is confirmed using flow\u0000cytometry, AFLP and morphometric analyses of 169 plants from 27\u0000populations covering representatively distribution ranges of\u0000the respective species. The species differ in flower colour,\u0000with those of C. greimleri ruby red to brownish-purple and\u0000those of C. waldsteinii pinkish-purple to purple. Potamogeton nerviger was described from Lithuania in 1827 as a proper species. Based on morphological and anatomical characters, its interpretation has since varied, ranging from synonymization with other species to identification as different hybrids and intraspecific taxa. Currently, it is universally recognized as the hybrid P. alpinus × P. lucens. Using a combined molecular, morphological and anatomical investigation we re-examined the identity of P. ×nerviger, based on both original and recent plant material. We report a successful amplification and sequencing of nuclear ribosomal ITS1 region from a 188year-old type collection. This was shown to be genetically identical to the morphologically matching plants recently collected at the type locality. Comparison with molecular characters of the possible parental species shows that P. ×nerviger is not P. alpinus × P. lucens, as currently believed, but another hybrid, P. nodosus × P. perfoliatus, which is currently called P. ×assidens. This molecular identification is also supported by anatomical evidence. In contrast, the actual existence of the hybrid P. alpinus × P. lucens is doubtful. Consequences for nomenclature and identities of records reported from other sites are discussed.

Indicator values for light, temperature, moisture, (soil) reaction, nutrient availability and salinity were assigned to 2275 species and 801 other taxa, using the nine-degree (or 12-degree for moisture and 10-degree for salinity) ordinal scales proposed by Heinz Ellenberg for the flora of Germany. The values are compatible with Ellenberg indicator values, which were used as a baseline, but extensively revised based on our own field observations, literature, comparison with indicator value systems of other countries and an analysis of taxon co-occurrences in vegetation plots from the Czech National Phytosociological Database. Taxa in the Czech flora missing in the original Ellenberg tables were added. Compared with the original Ellenberg's dataset of indicator values, smaller proportions of taxa were classified as extremely basiphilous, extremely oligotrophic or strictly avoiding saline habitats. The revised values were tested by regressing unweighted site mean indicator values against measured environmental variables. In most cases, prediction of environmental conditions was slightly more accurate with the new Czech indicator values than with the original Ellenberg indicator values. The full dataset of indicator values is available in an electronic appendix to this paper.
