XOS have a prebiotic characteristic by promoting the growth of probiotic microorganisms. Xylan containing agriculture wastes <em>e.g.</em> rice straw, sugarcane bagasse, corncobs, cassava peel and waste can be used to produce XOS by a consecutive process of alkali-pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. In this study, we focused on enzymatic production of XOS from cassava peel and waste, which is a low cost material with a relatively high xylan content. The dried cassava peel and waste were ground and sieved to be &lt;100 mesh size, and were then subjected to pretreatment with 0.5% (w/v) sodium hypochlorite solution for 5<!--> <!-->h to remove the lignin in the sample. In this work, the microwave-absorptive polyurethane composites are prepared using natural zeolites of Sarulla North Sumatra and commercial ferric-oxide as fillers. Weight ratio of the natural zeolite to ferric oxide were varied (18:2; 16:4; 14:6; 12:8 and 10:10) by weight. The fillers are prepared using ball milling technique and characterized using Particle Size Analyzer for particle size distribution. The nanocomposites, prepared using in-situ reaction of polyethylene glycol and toluene diisocyanate, is characterized for physical and mechanical properties using tensile strength, thermal properties with TGA techniques, as well as morphological and chemical properties using scanning electron microscopy. Composition and loading of the nanofillers against polyurethane matrices is 20% by weight. Microwave-absorption properties of the nanocomposites is characterized using 8-12<!--> <!-->GHz frequency. Both bacterial strains were able to produce high amounts of biosurfactants interacted with pyrite that had an important role in their adhesion on the surface of pyrite as well as the change of pyrite surface properties. Over the course of the experiments, the pH of the solutions gradually decreased to ∼3, indicating the active oxidation of pyrite minerals by bacteria. The growth of both bacterial strains resulted in the generation of biosurfactants as represented by the decrease of the surface tension of the solutions and the increase of the contact angle of the pyrite surfaces as a function of time. However, the contact angle of pyrite surfaces gradually decreased after 5 days of incubation until the experiments terminated on 30 days. Scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) analyses also confirmed the role of both bacterial strains in changing the pyrite surface properties to be more hydrophobic or more hydrophilic depending on the time of incubation. These results indicate that the changes of pyrite surface properties are clearly as the results of bacterial action, likely serving as both bio-collector or bio-frother and depressant that would be very applicable for flotation processes. These results increase our knowledge on the interactions in pyrite-bacteria complexes and could potentially be a very useful result with real exploitable value for those working on sulfide bioflotation processes.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":20431,"journal":{"name":"Procedia Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.proche.2016.03.068","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91089619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper VTES (vinyltriethoxysilane) and TEOS (tetraalkoxysilane) are mixed in 3:1 ratio. Sol-gel solution was prepared by hydrolysis process of precursors by using ethanol as solvent. After a while a pH-sensitive indicator bromocresol purple (BCP) and surfactant were incorporate into the sol-gel mixture. The percentage of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) which act as surfactant were varied to observe the effect of improving host material's nanostructure as well as the interaction between BCP and sol-gel matrices. The absorption peak of the BCP dye changed significantly in the presence of surfactant compared to pure VTES: TEOS mixture (control) in the range of 400 to 450<!--> <!-->nm. The presence of BCP dye in the sol-gel mixture can be determined via FTIR spectrum with a =C–H stretch in aromatics observed at 3100-3000 cm-1 which represented the aromatic of the BCP structure. The addition of BCP and surfactant had influenced the FTIR spectra of VTES: TEOS sol-gel materials. Addition of an anionic surfactant to the sol-gel mixtures was found to increase the BCP dye and the sol-gel matrices interaction, thus reducing the dye's tendency to leach. This work shows that sol-gel derived matrices yield dyes with sufficient rigid environment and addition of the surfactant helps to improve the interaction of filler matrices. The anionic SDS shows better leaching resistant compared to non-ionic PEG surfactant.
