In this paper, we investigated the high temperature thermoelectric properties of Ca/sub 2/Co/sub 2/O/sub 5/ with Cr substitution. CaCO/sub 3/,Co/sub 3/O/sub 4/ and Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ powders were used as the starting mixture. These powders were mixed by ball milling and sintered by a pulsed electric current sintering method (PECS) in Ar gas atmosphere. Both the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the sintered bodies were simultaneously measured in He gas atmosphere from room temperature up to 1000 K. The electrical conductivity of Ca/sub 2-x/Cr/sub x/Co/sub 2/O/sub 5/ increased with increasing Cr content and reached a peak at x=0.3. The Seebeck coefficients of all the sintered bodies are positive, indicating p-type materials. The power factor of Ca/sub 2-x/Cr/sub x/Co/sub 2/O/sub 5/ increased with increasing Cr content, and the sample with x=0.3 showed the highest power factor 2.9 /spl times/ 10/sup -4/ W/mK/sup 2/ at 800/spl deg/C.","PeriodicalId":203601,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings ICT2001. 20 International Conference on Thermoelectrics (Cat. The annealing effects on the thermoelectrical properties were also investigated. The apparent density ratio of obtained ingot with size of /spl phi/50/spl times/10 mm was larger than 98%. The electrical resistivity /spl rho/ and Seebeck coefficient a were measured as functions of temperature over the range from room temperature to 800 K. The values of /spl alpha/ and /spl rho/ were 90% to those of the smaller sized ingot with /spl phi/20/spl times/5 mm. They suggest that the obtained large ingot has enough performance for application. It was found that the surface of the specimen was covered with a thin film with double layered structure after heating above 923 K in ambient air. This was identified as an antimony oxide-based material. It can be estimated that the thickness of the inner layer will be approximately 370 /spl mu/m after annealing at 873 K for ten years in air atmosphere.","PeriodicalId":203601,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings ICT2001. 20 International Conference on Thermoelectrics (Cat. When coupled with mechanical alloying, this process promises substantial cost savings because of its ability to deliver net shape components, leading to a reduction in the so-called kerf losses and higher material yields. It is also well known that materials produced using one of the various powder processing routes have greater mechanical strength when compared to conventionally grown alloys, leading to an improved reliability. We have produced both p-type (Bi/sub 2-x/Sb/sub x/Te/sub 3/) and n-type (Bi/sub 2/Te/sub 3-y/Se/sub y/) alloys using mechanical alloying and extrusion and have studied the structure, composition and thermoelectric properties of these alloys. By carefully controlling every step of the process we have found that it is possible to produce rods of thermoelectric material, for both p- and n-type alloys, which have good properties. Figures of merit of up to 3.35 /spl times/ 10/sup -3/ K/sup -1/ for p-type alloys and 2.8 /spl times/ 10/sup -3/ K/sup -1/ for n-type alloys have been obtained. A fivefold improvement in the mechanical properties over conventional melt grown material has also been observed.","PeriodicalId":203601,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings ICT2001. 20 International Conference on Thermoelectrics (Cat. The doping elements were Ti, Zr, Mn and Co. Electronic structures calculations of experimental samples were carried out using Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent potential approximation (KKR-CPA) method within the LDA framework. We observed that the room temperature Seebeck coefficient changed from highly negative in FeV/sub 0.98/Mn/sub 0.02/Sb (-190 /spl mu/V/K) to highly positive in FeV/sub 0.85/Ti/sub 0.15/Sb (+140 /spl mu/V/K), being also negative in FeVSb. Except for Fe/sub 0.98/Co/sub 0.02/VSb, all investigated samples exhibit either semiconducting or semimetallic behaviors of resistivity curves. From band structure calculations FeVSb exhibits a narrow band gap (E/sub g/=0.45 eV) at E/sub F/. However, as deduced from the KKR-CPA calculations, a small disorder in FeVSb may substantially modify electronic structure in the vicinity of EF, leading into an energy gap closing. Total energy analysis allowed estimating lattice parameter variation with doping as well as a site preference of substituted atoms in the FeVSb host. Densities of states of Ti, Zr, Mn and Co impurities in FeVSb were computed. The others dopants, Mn impurity in FeVSb form a huge peak in the gap, which can be responsible for unusual transport properties of this system.","PeriodicalId":203601,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings ICT2001. 20 International Conference on Thermoelectrics (Cat. Here, the situation for homogeneous bismuth antimony telluride based Peltier cooler material is discussed, using representative values of constant material parameters in comparison to real experimental data of the temperature dependence of the thermoelectric properties. For the case of a constant pellet cross section, given pellet length and neglecting heat transfer aside, the problem can be treated as one-dimensional. The relation between electric current density j, temperature difference /spl utri/T, and absorbed cooling power or COP, respectively, along a single Peltier element have been considered by ab-initio calculations and plotted for the entire two-dimensional range (over j and /spl utri/T) of relevant operating conditions, assuming constant material properties. Accordingly, the spatial temperature distribution inside the thermoelectric material has been calculated. Differential equations governing thermoelectric transports have been analytically and numerically solved by the software tool MATHEMATICA. This instrument is capable of solving the inhomogeneous second order differential equation for the temperature profile even for nonconstant coefficients with mixed boundary conditions provided. Thus, exact temperature profiles along the pellet can be easily calculated taking into account the correct temperature dependence of the material properties. The maximum temperature difference has been determined for arbitrarily given cooling power or COP, respectively, including zero temperature difference and adiabatic cold side (/spl Delta/T/sub max/) cases. Evidence is provided for a very good quantitative agreement between /spl Delta/T/sub max/ values calculated using real temperature dependent material properties or volume averaged constant values.","PeriodicalId":203601,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings ICT2001. 20 International Conference on Thermoelectrics (Cat. On the atomic scale, to find new multi-component compounds with complex electronic and crystal structures is a way to high-Z thermoelectric materials. On the nano-scale, quantum wells, wires and dots are considered to be the dawn for breaking the traditional barrier of ZT/spl sim/1 existing for several decades. From the point of view of microstructure, inhomogeneities in thermoelectric materials, such as interfaces/grain-boundaries and inclusions, have significant influences on their thermoelectric properties. On the macroscopic scale, the thermoelectric device functions depend on thermoelectric materials used for building the device and device configuration (such as multistage or segmented devices). This review briefly presents the state-of-the-art and perspectives in the multiscale understanding of thermoelectric materials and devices.","PeriodicalId":203601,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings ICT2001. 20 International Conference on Thermoelectrics (Cat. Results of measurement on Ti-Ni family shape memory alloys and metastable austenitic stainless steel SUS301 are presented and compared with other properties such as the electrical resistivity or internal friction, which are influenced by the phase transition and can be used to study the phase transitions. It is concluded that the measurement of thermoelectric properties seems a very useful and cogent tool in the investigation of the behaviors of martensitic transformations. Discussions are made on the behavior of Seebeck coefficient based on the calculated density of states of electrons for various phases of Ti-Ni alloy.","PeriodicalId":203601,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings ICT2001. 20 International Conference on Thermoelectrics (Cat. The Na/sub x/CoO/sub 2-/spl delta// single crystals are prepared by a flux technique, and the flaky single crystals are very thin on the c-axis. The in-plane electrical resistivity (/spl rho/), the thermoelectric power (S) and the in-plane thermal conductivity (/spl kappa/) are measured in the range of 300 K to 800 K. The estimated power factor (PF=S/sup 2//spl middot//spl rho//sup -1/) and the figure-of-merit (Z=S/sup 2//spl middot//spl rho//sup -1//spl kappa//sup -1/) are about 2.4 mWm/sup -1/ K/sup -2/ and 0.12 mK/sup -1/ at 300 K, respectively. These factors increase with temperature, and reach the value of PF=7.7 mWm/sup -1/ K/sup -2/ and Z=1.5 mK/sup -1/ at 800 K, and the dimensionless value of ZT exceeds the criterion of 1. The PF and Z exceed the values of typical \"high temperature thermoelectric materials\". Eight models of Bi/sub 20-x/Sb/sub x/Te/sub 32/ (x=0, 2, 6, 8, 12, 14, 18 and 20) are calculated. The results show that there is less difference in the ionic bond between Te(I)-Bi(Sb) and Te(II)-Bi(Sb), but the covalent bond of Te(I)-Bi(Sb) is stronger than that of Te(II)-Bi(Sb). The interaction between Te(I) and Te(I) in different layers is the weakest and the interaction should be Van Der Waals power. The charge of Sb is lower than that of Bi, and the ionic bond of Te-Sb is weaker than that of Te-Bi. The covalent bond of Te-Sb is also weaker than that of Te-Bi. Therefore, the thermoelectric property may be improved with the adjusting of electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity from changing the composition in the compounds of Bi-Sb-Te. The calculated results are consistent with the experiments.","PeriodicalId":203601,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings ICT2001. 20 International Conference on Thermoelectrics (Cat.
