The paper explored the use of wh-questions in reading comprehension text by Grade 10 English First Additional Language learners at Milton Mpfumedzeni Secondary School at the Vhumbedzi Circuit in Limpopo Province, South Africa. A quantitative approach was adopted because it uses statistics and numbers to predict, discover facts, and test hypotheses while the qualitative provides in-depth knowledge of a phenomenon. Thirty-six participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique because it gives each member of the population an equal chance of being included in the investigation. Also, a convenience sampling procedure was utilised as the subjects are readily accessible although participation is not equal for all members of individuals in the target population and study results are not essentially generalisable. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 22 to maintain in-depth statistical analysis due to its feasibility. Preliminary investigation revealed that participants were incompetent in reading comprehension text but after using momentous strategies, they performed outstandingly. Thus, the paper sanctions using the identified strategies applicable to reading comprehension text.","PeriodicalId":201732,"journal":{"name":"JET (Journal of English Teaching)","volume":"32 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139289905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These tales form part of the prescribed syllabus, CAPS, in South Africa specifically for Grade 9 English First Additional (EFAL) learners. The study explored the perceptions of folktales by 9 learners and 9 teachers. It was a qualitative study using purposeful sampling and an interpretivist research paradigm. The theoretical lens employed was Vygotsky’s constructivist theory. The study found that there are conflicting views on learning African folktales in English. The former Apartheid system’s impact has not completely been forgotten and there were still negative attitudes towards English as the language of the oppressor. Yet participants claimed that folktales needed to be revived and teachers must use narratives closer to their home and culture. Learners were positive towards learning folktales but there were those who deemed the stories as too simple to study in Grade 9. Teacher participants however revealed that learners benefit in that they learn new vocabulary and also about other cultures and life. Comprehensive and purposive sampling techniques were used. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses methods were employed in the study. The least knowledge the teachers owned was CK whereas classroom practice was found to be relatively the highest. They had moderate PK in assessing students’ understanding of topics, in drawing up clear classroom rules, creating a friendly atmosphere, and developing a good relationship with students. However, the overall finding revealed that the teachers were not well equipped with PK. They had moderate PCK in designing instructional objectives and context, and in using appropriate examples to explain concepts related to the subject matter whereas their knowledge of students’ understandings and misunderstandings was inadequate. They had low knowledge to diagnose the notions that were problematic for students and to think why these concepts became difficult. There was a strong positive correlation between CK and classroom practice. The correlation between CK and PK was fair whereas there was a weak positive correlation between PK and classroom practice. There was not statistically significant relationship between PCK and classroom practice.","PeriodicalId":201732,"journal":{"name":"JET (Journal of English Teaching)","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139313985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Initially, error analysis was conducted manually and involved a limited number of corpus. However, computer software advancement has facilitated much larger amounts of data analysis. This study aimed at analyzing the errors identified in undergraduate thesis abstracts written by 28 students of an English Education study program in Jakarta. Data were analyzed using UAM Corpus Tool. The results show that, successively, the types of errors most frequently committed in the corpus are: (1) grammatical errors; (2) phrasing errors; and (3) punctuation errors; while the rarest errors are pragmatic errors and lexical errors. These findings indicate that the students need to improve their mastery of grammatical rules, ability to prevent their first language interference, and skills to use correct punctuation to empower them to write more effective thesis abstracts.","PeriodicalId":201732,"journal":{"name":"JET (Journal of English Teaching)","volume":"79 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139313994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many students and teachers in foreign countries need help to develop their students’ writing skills. Those can be solved by giving a technique that helps students develop ideas to write. One of the techniques is by using direct written corrective feedback. This study investigated the effectiveness of direct written corrective feedback in teaching writing recount text for the first-grade students in one Islamic Senior High School in Pare. Quasi-experimental research was used to determine the different scores between both classes after a treatment. Fifty-six (56) students participated in this study and were divided into two groups (experimental and control groups. The results were calculated using the Mann-Whitney U test since the data were not normal, and it was continued to find out the effect size to strengthen how far the influence of direct WCF was. The results revealed that direct WCF was effective at the medium level for the students’ writing accuracy. Implementing direct WCF for EFL students is suggested since it provides many benefits for teachers and students to boost writing accuracy.","PeriodicalId":201732,"journal":{"name":"JET (Journal of English Teaching)","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Policy analysis is also used at University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. HAMKA (UHAMKA) as a reference material in implementing policies by the university. One of these policies is the policy for the TOEFL test in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UHAMKA environment. This policy requires students who will take the final exam, either through a thesis trial or through publication, to take the TOEFL test with a minimum score of 450. Because of this policy, this research was conducted to find the urgency of carrying out the TOEFL test for these students. This study uses qualitative research methods that focus on reality or facts that occur to the subject being studied. In addition, the population and sample of this study came from students who had taken the TOEFL test which was held at the Language Laboratory of FKIP UHAMKA. The sample of this study was selected using a purposive sampling technique which put forward certain reasons in selecting the sample. Furthermore, triangulation is used in this study. The triangulation of the data used a questionnaire as well as structured interviews. Then, the data obtained through questionnaires and also interviews were analyzed qualitatively descriptively. The expected results of this study are the urgency of the TOEFL test for students who want to take the final exam, followed by the issuance of a Decree from the Dean of FKIP University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. HAMKA regarding the obligation to have a TOEFL certificate with a minimum score of 450 in the FKIP UHAMKA environment as one of the prerequisites for registering for the final exam, either through a thesis trial or through publication.","PeriodicalId":201732,"journal":{"name":"JET (Journal of English Teaching)","volume":"54 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139315921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So, change is inevitable. Our practices, perspectives and assessment procedures must be changed in accordance with the changing law of nature. What was considered best yesterday may not remain best today. It is educators who need to keep themselves abreast of new methodologies, trends and discoveries to cater to the changing needs of students. This study attempts to illustrate how innovative and effective Process of Perfection (POP) method of teaching is and how this method can be adapted in our EFL classrooms to maximise the learning outcomes of students whose English language competence may or may not be high and classrooms may or may not be well-equipped with ICT tools and adequate number of teaching resources. 6 English language teachers and 40 students from the only private school that implemented POP method of Global Classroom curriculum were selected to survey the effectiveness and adaptability in the teaching of the English language. The researcher employed mixed-methods research to undertake the study where two different sets of questionnaires for both the teachers and the students were used to collect data. The findings demonstrated that advantages outnumbered disadvantages in a country like Nepal. Teachers want to use this teaching method because after having been acquainted with this method of teaching, they no longer have difficulty designing hands-on activities. Each textbook contains recommended activities that are designed according to the lesson. And this teaching method basically facilitates three types of learners: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. The students also feel happy as this method is a joyful and effective learning process. However, they sometimes have difficulties grasping the concept of some English grammar lessons that are of higher level.","PeriodicalId":201732,"journal":{"name":"JET (Journal of English Teaching)","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139316191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lesson study itself is a collaborative project where the teachers can share their knowledge and skills to improve teaching performances continuously. Although lesson study is useful, it may have a different result if it is implemented in online mode, particularly during the pandemic situation, because the teachers cannot always meet physically with their colleagues and the students. Thus, the researchers are interested to analyze the lesson study implemented during this pandemic situation. This research aims to find out how lesson study can improve teachers’ learning awareness during this pandemic situation. In this research, the participants are five English teachers from different elementary schools in Indonesia. To gain the data, the researchers implemented a case study method. Besides, the researchers used interview guidelines and an observation sheet. After collecting and analyzing the data, the researchers concluded that the teachers could enhance their learning awareness by implementing the following procedure: knowing their role in the learning process and knowing attractive learning activities.","PeriodicalId":201732,"journal":{"name":"JET (Journal of English Teaching)","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139369165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
