The incorporation of the receptor molecule increases the partition coefficient and/or the ability of the analyte to produce a significant shift in the device properties such as mobility and threshold voltage through dipole interactions. The exposure of the receptor to certain analytes produces a large increase in the dipole moment which leads to an increase in the interaction energy and an increase in trapping effects.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128507145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The THz absorption properties of the structures were modeled using COMSOL finite element modeling software. Optimized thin metal films and thin metamaterial structures were fabricated using standard microfabrication processes on Si substrates. The THz spectral characteristics of the structures were probed using FTIR spectrometer in the reflection mode. The measured THz reflection, from thin film of both broad-band and resonant metamaterial structures, exhibit excellent agreement with their respective models. Both types of absorbers can be incorporated in the fabrication of MEMS-based THz thermal sensors operating in active mode with quantum cascade laser (QCL) sources.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128558208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when standard CMOS image sensors are employed in applications that require the detection of light with a very small spectral width, like 3D-time-of-flight imaging or other applications with laser light illumination, problems arise, that are negligible in standard imaging applications with broadband illumination. For a given wavelength a strong variation of the sensitivity upon small process related variations of the dielectric stack on top of the photodiodes leads to large die to die variations. In this paper a method is presented that decreases these sensitivity variations by introducing multiple optical path lengths of the dielectric stack within each photodiode. Using this method the maximum quantum efficiency variation for process induced thickness variations could be reduced significantly for a broad range of wavelengths without any additional processing steps.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128240796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The principle of the power sensor accomplished with GaAs MMIC process is to measure a certain percentage of the RF signal power coupled from a CPW line by a MEMS membrane. In the method, a phase shift of the RF signal is introduced by the MEMS membrane during the power detection, which affects the phase characteristic of the incident RF signal. In this paper, the lumped phase model of the inline power sensor is given and verified by measured results. Using this model, the effects of the height and the width of the MEMS membrane on the phase of the power sensor are studied. A good linearity of the output response at X-band and a sensitivity of about 52.6 µV·mW−1 at 12 GHz are obtained under the normal ambient temperature. Experiments show that the inline power sensor with the MEMS membrane 100 µm and 147 µm in width respectively has resulted in the average phase changes of about 14% and 33% at X-band compared with that 50 µm in width above the same CPW line.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128721345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One limitation of existing systems is the ability to reliably detect the presence of ice and snow on the road surface. By utilizing infrared detectors sensitive in the water absorption spectral range, it is possible to remotely detect the presence of water on a surface. Using the near infrared spectra to detect water is well known, but further research is desired on methods to distinguish water in the form of water, ice and snow. Remote sensors are easy to install and they have low service costs compared to road mounted sensors. Existing remote sensors are currently expensive, but by utilizing cost effective infrared detectors a sensor has been made that can be deployed at any road weather information system. Laboratory results showed that the sensor gave reliable output that distinguishes between the surface conditions dry, wet, snowy and icy.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129618401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By curve fitting the measured time intervals into the sinusoidal nature of the harmonic oscillator, it is possible to measure acceleration without the need of adjustable parameters (such as bias and scale factor) derived by calibration. Being a function of the accuracy of the time interval measurement, the device sensitivity varies with resonant frequency, clock resolution, and oscillation amplitude. The resonant frequency of the harmonic oscillation and the oscillation amplitude can be adjusted in real time to optimize performance for a specific dynamic range.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129169395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When compared to typical solutions presented in the literature utilizing a voltage integration, the proposed solution is based on a current differentiation. The interface has been designed as an integrated solution in a standard 0.35µm CMOS technology with low voltage (±1V) and low power (430µW) characteristics resulting suitable for on-chip integration in portable sensor applications. Experimental measurements have been performed through a prototype PCB and commercial gas (Figaro TGS series) and humidity (Honeywell HCH series) sensors. The achieved results have shown good linearity and accuracy both for wide variations of floating capacitive sensors, having a baseline or changing their value in the range [pF-nF], as well as for more reduced variations of grounded resistive sensors, ranging from few kΩ to hundreds of kΩ.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125398259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The helical coils of the inductor are formed by serpentine wires to reduce the radial rigidity. Also the inductor is encapsulated by material with high Poisson's ratio. When an axial deformation is applied to this encapsulated inductor, the cross-sectional area of the helical coils will have more evident change due to low radial rigidity and encapsulating material. Therefore, the change of inductance or LC resonant frequency can be enhanced to provide better sensitivity of the LC strain sensor, which are verified by simulated and measured results.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126885939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is proposed here to describe, model and test these methods, by designing them for a micro-flying device. For this purpose, a new bio-mimetic acoustic sensor inspired by the cricket's auditory system was developed and tested. The sound sensor consists of two tiny omnidirectional microphones weighing only 0.1g, equipped with acoustic resonators and a biomimetic temporal processing system. The hearing system was tuned to the carrier frequency of the sound source, which is 4.7kHz (the frequency of crickets' song). The performances of the directional sound sensor were tested and described in terms of their linearity and accuracy, and their robustness to sound disturbances and dynamic sound source movements.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123234461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
