The sensor with simple electrode geometry fabricated by low cost screen printing method detects 103CFU/ml E.coli in spiked blood samples in 30 minutes without any labeling and with less than 3% false positive results which is of great clinical significance. To avoid biofouling, an initial centrifugation is done for the first 15 minutes of the total 30 mins which helps in improving specificity. The battery operated portable electronic circuit is designed with zero offset features to take into account the variability in the sensor fabrication for faithful display of bacteria concentration range. Hence, in comparison to the existing reports, the proposed immunosensor system has an optimum combination of the essential features required for a commercial biosensor.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117349870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our strategy was that the AuNPs were introduced into the electro-microchip by the specific binding of the antibodies and constructs a “bridge” between two electrodes allowing the electrons to pass. The detectable concentration limits for KET and LH were 50 ng/mL and 20 mIU/mL, respectively. Therefore, the developed electro-microchip has advantages for the smaller sample volume (30 µL), rapid quantitative measurement, and smaller detectable concentration than the commercial detection products (KET: 100 ng/mL, and LH: 80 mIU/mL).","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121311508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Usual practices to secure uniqueness of sensor ID is to use MAC or network address or to use a proprietary ID in application layer. In pervasive computing era, it is desirable to uniquely identify a sensor with a URN regardless of types of network to which the sensor is connected. This paper proposes to embed a dual interface RF tag, which records a globally unique ID, EPC (Electronic Product Code), used in business transactions, to sensor microcontroller(MCU). The dual interface RF tag allows us to access its tag data either via RF interface and a baseband interface. This enables a sensor MCU to use EPC to uniquely identify the sensor for its whole product lifecycle. Since EPC have been only accessed through the RF interface, we developed a modified UPnP to automatically discover EPC enabled sensors through the baseband interface for various access networks. Taking advantage of the existing network RFID architecture, we can search services related to an EPC in a form of URL and also can publish and subscribe sensor data service with a standardized web service interface. This paper reports a hardware implementation of dual interface RF tag with a ZigBee transceiver. Timing requirement of RFID protocol to access RF tag's memory can be met by a software control of off-the-shelf MCU GPIO. A 96 bits EPC stored in an dual interface RF tag can be retrieved in 12.3 msec. For the automatic device discovery of an EPC enabled sensor attached to a ZigBee network, a modified UPnP is also developed. The proposal is implemented in a working prototype with 49 sensors which geographically dispersed in 3 locations which can continuously collect 181 sensor data for various applications. We also evaluated the minimum time interval to publish sensor data to find 300 msec is the shortest interval in our implementation. This interval is dominated by the communications capacity between sensor MCU and on-board transceiver chip.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124811763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, an improved prototype of a tactile capacitive fingertip for the hands of the humanoid robot iCub is presented. In particular, a conductive silicone based material has been used to improve the characteristics of the capacitive sensor and an additional silicone foam layer has been also introduced in the sensor architecture to prevent behavior variation due to fingertip deterioration (e.g., caused by object manipulation). A characterization of the fingertip sensing behavior is presented. The three thiolates that were used to encapsulate nano-gold were 1-octanethiol (Au-C8), 4-tert-butylbenzenethiol (Au-TBT), and a mixture of both (Au-C8TBT). The vapor responses using MPC sensing film on both QCM and CR transducers were rapid, reversible, and linear (R2 > 0.99). The Au-C8-coated sensors represented the well known sensing behavior, which holds that sorption mass and resistance changes are correlated. The Au-TBT sensor showed the opposite—a high sorption mass for a QCM signal but virtually no change in resistance for CR. This result contradicts the conventional belief that the degree of resistance change is proportional to the absorbed mass. The mixed-ligand Au-C8TBT film showed alternative vapor selectivity for both CR and QCM transducers that deviated from both Au-C8 and Au-TBT film. The chemical structures of the mechanisms for vapor selectivity for two different transducers were investigated and are discussed here.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129774381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The procedure includes both online measurement and offline inspection. By using the property where the passing time of the cell in the micro channel is a function of the cell stiffness and its size, a real time vision system whose handling frequency is 6 kHz can capture the size as well as the passing time of each cell. During the online measurement, we save two image data at both the entrance and the exit for each cell. In offline manual inspection, all doubtful data are killed so that we can make sure the reliability. Experimental results ensure that the proposed approach can handle 500 cells within 10min in including both online and offline procedures.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117193553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper evaluates the best approach for stroke detection using either accelerometers, gyroscopes or magnetometers, which are embedded into the inertial measuring unit. This work concludes what is the optimal training data set for stroke classification and proves that classifiers can perform well when tested on players who were not used to train the classifier. This paper presents an experimental investigation and analysis of the narrowband on-body propagation channel. This analysis considers each of the factors affecting the channel during a range of stationary and motion activities in different environments with actual wireless mote devices on the body. Use of such motes allows greater freedom in the subject's movements and the inclusion of real-world indoor and outdoor environments in a test sequence. This paper identifies and analyses the effect of the different components of the signal propagation (mean propagation path gain, large-scale fading and small-scale fading) and the cause of the losses and variation due to activities, positions or environmental factors. Our results show the effect on the received signal and the impact of voluntary and involuntary movements, which cause shadowing effects. The analysis also allows us to identify sensor positions on the body that are more reliable and those positions that may require a relay or those that may be suitable for acting as a relay.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116412312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
