However, the recovery is often delayed and incomplete. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) produces a nonthermal effect on living tissues; it promotes healing, remodels and reduces inflammation of an injured nerve. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcome of CTR between patients who underwent postoperative PBMT and without PBMT. <b><i>Materials and methods:</i></b> We recruited 105 patients who had open CTR from January 2019 to January 2021. Fifty-six patients fulfilled the study criteria and were randomized into two groups: with PBMT (<i>n</i> = 28) and without PBMT (<i>n</i> = 28). Demographic and clinical data were obtained preoperatively. The PBMT group had ten 3-min sessions over 3 weeks using 808 nm, 50 mW PBMT to deliver 9 J per session to the CTR incision scar. Clinical outcomes were assessed at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Data analysis was performed with SPSS software. <b><i>Results:</i></b> There were significant improvements in the Functional Status Scale in the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (<i>p</i> = 0.018) and pain (visual analogue scales) in the morning (<i>p</i> = 0.019) at 1 month postoperatively in the PBMT group compared with the non-PBMT group. Improvement of tip pinch strength at 3 months (<i>p</i> = 0.022) and 6 months (<i>p</i> = 0.024), lateral pinch strength at 1 month (<i>p</i> = 0.042) and 3 months (<i>p</i> = 0.05), and tripod pinch strength at 3 months (<i>p</i> = 0.005) was significantly better in the PBMT group. Thumb 2-point discrimination (2PD) at 3 months (<i>p</i> = 0.018) and 6 months (<i>p</i> = 0.016) and index finger 2PD at 3 months (<i>p</i> = 0.039) were also significantly improved in the PBMT group. There were no side effects of PBMT reported. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> Patients who underwent PBMT post-CTR had better outcomes. Assessing anterior segment, particularly immediately after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy, could provide clinically relevant information on ocular dynamics, refractive changes, and complication mechanisms, especially in late postoperative CBDS. <b><i>Objective:</i></b> To explore the acute effects of Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy on anterior segment parameters in late postoperative CBDS. <b><i>Methods and results:</i></b> In this study, 20 patients underwent Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy after cycloplegia, during which milky-white fluid material migrated into the anterior vitreous. Anterior segment parameters were assessed before and immediately after laser using Scheimpflug-Placido topographer. The main outcome measures were differences in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), aqueous depth (AqD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), iridocorneal angle (ICA), corneal volume (CV), and central corneal thickness (CCT) at the baseline versus at immediately after laser. The mean age and duration since surgery for CBDS presentation were 70.25 ± 6.21 and 6.15 ± 1.31 years, respectively. The AqD, ACV, ICA, and spherical equivalent increased significantly compared with baseline (4.18 vs. 4.02 mm, <i>p</i> = 0.001; 177 vs. 173.55 mm<sup>3</sup>, <i>p</i> = 0.004; 51.15° vs. 50.15°, <i>p</i> = 0.023; -1.00 vs. -2.00 D, <i>p</i> = 0.003, respectively). These changes were also associated with significantly improved BCVA an hour after capsulotomy [0.2 (0.05-0.2)] relative to baseline [0.3 (0.2-0.5)], (<i>p</i> = 0.001). According to the use types of energy devices, the patients were divided into laser group and ultrasonic scalpel group, with 65 patients in each group. The baseline data, operation-related indicators, operation complications, postoperative pathological conditions, and follow-up results of the two groups were compared. <b><i>Results:</i></b> The operations were successfully completed in both groups. The median operative time of total thyroidectomy (TT), lobectomy+central lymph node dissection (CLND), TT+CLND in the laser group were longer than that in the harmonic scalpel group, and the difference was statistically significant (<i>p</i> < 0.05). The incidence of parathyroid gland congestion in the laser group (10.3%) was lower than that in the harmonic scalpel group (19.2%), and the difference was statistically significant (<i>p</i> < 0.05). No significant differences were found in operative type, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative drainage volume, operative complications, postoperative hospital stay, and lymph node metastasis rate between the two groups (<i>p</i> > 0.05). No incidence was noted of recurrence, metastasis, or death in both groups. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> The 980-nm/1470-nm dual-wavelength fiber laser had an efficacy in open thyroidectomy similar to that of the harmonic scalpel, was safe and feasible, and less damage to the parathyroid gland blood supply than a scalpel. Meta-analyses were conducted to calculate the standard mean difference with a 95% confidence interval. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed utilizing the modified Jadad quality scale. <b><i>Results:</i></b> The meta-analyses found statistically significant differences between the impact of adjunct aPDT and MD alone on the peri-implant plaque index (PI), probing depth (PD), and bleeding on probing among smokers and diabetics with piM at the final follow-up visit. The teeth were randomly divided into six groups (<i>n</i> = 15) of (1) control (no intervention), (2) photobiomodulation alone (wavelength of 940 nm, 0.2 W, and 4 J/cm<sup>2</sup>), (3) conventional CSF, (4) laser CSF (wavelength of 940 nm, 1.5 W, and 4 J/cm<sup>2</sup>, and power density of 160 mW/cm<sup>2</sup>), (5) conventional CSF plus photobiomodulation, and (6) laser CSF plus photobiomodulation. Measurements were made on clinical photographs and dental casts using the AutoCAD software. Level of pain of patients was measured within the first 24 h after fiberotomy using a visual analog scale. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test (<i>α</i> = 0.05). <b><i>Results:</i></b> The magnitude (<i>p</i> = 0.014) and percentage (<i>p</i> = 0.035) of relapse were significantly different among the six groups, and they were the highest in the control group followed by photobiomodulation alone, laser CSF, conventional CSF, conventional CSF plus photobiomodulation, and finally, laser CSF plus photobiomodulation. Moreover, photobiomodulation plus laser CSF and photobiomodulation plus conventional CSF had significantly different results from the other groups. The six groups had no significant difference in sulcus depth changes, gingival recession (difference in primary and secondary crown height), or pain score (<i>p</i> > 0.05). <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> This study suggests that utilizing photobiomodulation combined with laser CSF or conventional CSF can be effective in reducing relapse. However, further clinical trials are required to support this idea. Subjective (questionnaires) and objective (polygraph) outcome measures were assessed at baseline, 3 months, and 4 years after the final laser treatment. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Twenty patients returned for the 4 years follow-up. The significant improvement in subjective sleep outcomes observed 3 months after Er:YAG laser treatment was still significant 4 years after treatment. No significant improvement or deterioration in objective polygraph outcome measures was observed during the 4 years of follow-up in our study. {"title":"Low-Level Photobiomodulation Therapy Modulates H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> Production, TRPC-6, and PGC-1α Levels in the Dystrophic Muscle.","authors":"Caroline Covatti, Daniela Sayuri Mizobuti, Guilherme Luiz da Rocha, Heloina Nathalliê Mariano da Silva, Caroline Caramano de Lourenço, Adriana Pertille, Elaine Cristina Leite Pereira, Elaine Minatel","doi":"10.1089/photob.2022.0115","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1089/photob.2022.0115","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p><b><i>Objective:</i></b> This study evaluated photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) effects on the factors involved in mitochondrial biogenesis, on the mitochondrial respiratory complexes, and on the transient receptor potential canonical channels (such as TRPC-1 and TRPC-6) in <i>in vitro</i> (mdx muscle cells) and <i>in vivo</i> studies (gastrocnemius muscle) from mdx mice, the dystrophin-deficient model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). <b><i>Background:</i></b> There is no successful treatment for DMD, therefore demanding search for new therapies that can improve the muscle role, the quality of life, and the survival of dystrophic patients. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> The dystrophic primary muscle cells received PBMT at 0.6 J and 5 J, and the dystrophic gastrocnemius muscle received PBMT at 0.6 J. <b><i>Results:</i></b> The dystrophic muscle cells treated with PBMT (0.6 J and 5 J) showed no cytotoxicity and significantly lower levels in hydrogen peroxide (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>) production. We also demonstrated, for the first time, the capacity of PBMT, at a low dose (0.6 J), in reducing the TRPC-6 content and in raising the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) content in the dystrophic gastrocnemius muscle. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> PBMT modulates H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> production, TRPC-6, and PGC-1α content in the dystrophic muscle.
