Jakubowski","doi":"10.4467/24497363rplj.22.005.17070","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4467/24497363rplj.22.005.17070","url":null,"abstract":"The manor and collections of Michał Pawlikowski in Medyka\u0000\u0000In 1809 Józef Benedykt Pawlikowski bought a landed estate in Medyka near Przemyśl from Wincenty Głogowski. Since then until 1939 Medyka remained in the hands of successive members of the Pawlikowski family, who made it their family hearth and main administrative centre of their large estate. Under the Pawlikowskis Medyka was not only a prosperous estate but also an important culture centre. The Medyka manor played an exceptional role between the wars, when it was a renowned literary centre and a painter’s atelier. Michał Pawlikowski (1887–1970), the last owner of Medyka, built a new manor between 1920 and 1927, where he ran a private publishing house called “Biblioteka Medycka” (The Medyka Library). The atmosphere of the place attracted representatives of the cultural elite of the period, famous politicians, outstanding scholars, army officers and clergy. The invaluable archival material and works of art accumulated in the manor reflected his archivist and collector’s passions. This paper presents Michał Pawlikowski as the last owner of the Medyka manor and also as an art collector and patron of the arts. The text discusses the development of the manor in Medyka with special attention paid to architectural achievements of particular members of the Pawlikowski family. The paper also describes at length the residence erected by Michał after the First World War, its architecture and the invaluable collections accumulated inside it, including the legacy of artist Artur Grottger and manuscripts of eminent Polish poets.","PeriodicalId":200415,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przemyski. Stefaniak","doi":"10.4467/24497363rplj.22.003.17068","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4467/24497363rplj.22.003.17068","url":null,"abstract":"The outline of the history of St Michael the Archangel’s Monastery of Dominican nuns in Kamianets Podilskyi (1708–1866) The Dominican monastery in Kamianets Podilskyi was the last pre-partition foundation on Polish land established by the nuns of the Order of Preachers. Józef Mocarski, provincial prior of the Dominican Ruthenian province, in 1708 founded the monastery for the nuns of his order in the recently recovered from the Turks (on the strength of the Treaty of Karlowitz) Kamianets Podilskyi. It was the easternmost Catholic monastery. It included nuns only of noble Polish origin; they were daughters of Podolia noblemen. In 1721 the process of setting up the monastery was completed and it was also then that a small convent church was consecrated, whose patron became St Michael the Archangel (patron of Ruthenia and the Dominican Ruthenian province). The Dominican nuns from Kamianets led contemplative life in strict enclosure. The monastery did well until the decline of the Commonwealth of Poland. In 1787 the monastery was threatened with closing as part of the plans to modernize the Kamianets fortress, which was to be strengthened with the buildings of city convents. Eventually, the nuns were not displaced, as the reorganization plans were not carried out. In 1793 Kamianets Podilskyi was taken over by Russians and the partition period started. Although the monastery was wealthy, the Dominican nuns started to struggle with various problems. A crisis of vocations appeared, which in 1822 was overcome through bringing three nuns from the monastery in Novogrudok, but in 1833 the situation repeated itself. However, a monastery school was set up, which gave the nuns some financial support. In 1839 the last vestition of two nuns took place, and in 1842 on the strength of a tsar’s decree the novitiate was closed, which was an indication of the monastery’s near demise. The monastery obtained a long-range status and existed until the closure of the Kamianets diocese in 1866. Then eight Dominican nuns were sent to the Carmelite nuns of old observance in Dubno, where there was a long-range monastery. That status was lost in 1890 and then the nuns residing there were relocated to the Benedictine nuns monastery in Sandomierz. It was then that three years later the last Dominican nun from Kamianets, Joanna Austutowiczówna, died, closing the history of her convent.","PeriodicalId":200415,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przemyski. A. 7\u0000\u0000The paper presents one of the less known Latin-Polish glossaries of plant names from the Franciscan manuscript codex at present kept at the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague. Even though over a hundred years ago the codex was mentioned among interesting manuscript relics and its links with Przemyśl were suggested, there had never been a thorough analysis of it. Therefore this article is an attempt to trace the provenance of the codex, which turns out to have been from the Franciscan monastery in Przemyśl to Prague. As a result of revived interest in late-medieval and 16th-century herbals, as well as Latin-Polish glossaries of herb names, the author has decided to present that relic. What speaks in favor of that decision is the fact that of the group of 271 plant names, which have been compared with the known dictionaries from Polish codices and herbals, nearly one-third features only in the Przemyśl (Prague) manuscript, thus confirming its value.","PeriodicalId":200415,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przemyski. The author does not focus on the Professor’s biography, however, but on a few selected academic achievements, with a view to presenting the Professor as an organizer of academic life, a person, someone whose life has been a perfect embodiment of a university professor. The main motif of the discussion concerns the links between the circles of Łódź and Przemyśl, which – after the death of Professor Jerzy Starnawski – Professor Wichowa has been maintaining and developing. This paper focuses on the role of the Roman Catholic St. Martin parish church in Krasiczyn during a crucial period in our history, i.e. the birth of democratic opposition based on the “Solidarity” movement and then public resistance after martial law had been introduced in Poland. The article consists of five parts: introduction, presentation of Rev. Stanisław Bartmiński, calendar of events between 1970 and 2008, accounts by people who in the 1970s and later, particularly during the martial law, had contact with the Krasiczyn parish, and short biographies of the interlocutors and people mentioned in the interviews. The publication is complete with the afterword of the then parish priest, Rev. Stanisław Bartmiński. The collected testimonies show the social, cultural and charity-oriented role of the Krasiczyn church rectory and its head priest, in particular Krasiczyn as the place of meetings of peasant activists who laid the foundations of independent organizations of individual farmers, as a relief centre for democratic opposition activists and later a regional relief center for the people oppressed for their Solidarity activity. Part of the material also concerns organizing in the early 1990s camps for children of Polish origin from Ukraine as well as Ukrainian children harmed during the Chernobyl catastrophe.","PeriodicalId":200415,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przemyski. Sebastian Piskorski on the occasion of ordination, vesture and taking vows of Franciszek Szembek’s children – the structure and main issues] \u0000This study is devoted to two sermons by Rev. Sebastian Piskorski delivered during the ceremonies of the first mass of Michał Szembek and taking the veil and religious vows by Teresa Franciszka Szembekówna, Nun of the Visitation – both children of Franciszek Szembek. The paper analyzes the roles of particular elements of the sermons in creating a persuasive message whose aim is to accompany the young in their rites of passage. The preacher shows them what the way they have chosen will look like. He makes them realize the significance of the mission they undertake as well as possible difficulties; he introduces them into the special nature of the clergy, showing them what they give up and what they let themselves in for. Those deliberations, referring to the motifs of mystical meal and mystical way, are supposed to assist them in making a free and conscious decision. What is remarkable is the exceptional skill of the preacher, who has based his discussion on Gospel pericopes devoted to certain days of the liturgical calendar. The invention base for the sermons is the Bible and the writings of the Church Fathers. What is also important is estate-related factors: the significance and consequences of the vows taken and the mission Michał and Teresa Franciszka are to undertake once they become part of the clergy. Time showed that it was particularly Teresa Szembekówna that fulfilled her task, as a promoter of the worship of the Heart of Jesus in Poland; her zeal contributed to Pope Clement XIII sanctioning the worship.","PeriodicalId":200415,"journal":{"name":"Rocznik Przemyski.
