This article explores the construction and development models, as well as practical paths of English aesthetic education courses. {"title":"The Use of Marked English Verbs as a Tool of Protest in African Commonwealth Poetry","authors":"Eric Dzeayele Maiwong","doi":"10.22158/selt.v12n2p175","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22158/selt.v12n2p175","url":null,"abstract":"This paper examines the use of marked English verbs as an aspect of the highly technical manipulation of the English Language by some distinguished African Commonwealth poets, in order to achieve their aims. By using data from African Commonwealth Poetry, selected from the writings of Brutus (1973), Nortje (1973), and Mtshali (1972), and basing the analysis on Markedness theories, Semiotics, and Critical Discourse Analysis in order to buttress its analysis. Among its key findings and contributions, the paper establishes that marked English verbs constitute an efficient tool that enables the three poets in focus to protest against the various injustices of apartheid and that Africanization of the English Language is not the only solution available to African Commonwealth writers, as they grapple with the problem of expressing themselves in a foreign language. Furthermore, the paper has made a pertinent contribution in linguistic studies by proving that the linguistic phenomenon of markedness goes beyond existing linguistic terms like hyponymy and polysemy and can thus not be better expressed by them as some scholars claim. It equally proves that a closer study of African Commonwealth Literature necessitates an analytical study of various parts of speech and not only the bigger units of English. Some musicals will be dubbed in Chinese version for performance, so that the audience can enjoy the plots and songs more deeply. However, the different historical origins, social customs and religious cultures have formed specific cultural backgrounds, which in turn have formed different ways of thinking, values and pragmatic rules. All these factors have become obstacles in the translation of English musicals. As the main content of musicals songs, librettos have become an important medium for audience to appreciate musicals. Therefore, the translation of songs in musicals becomes the most important part in the study of musicals translation. When the families are strong and united, the entire nation will definitely be strong and prosperous. If the families are weak or fragile, the entire society will obviously be fragilised. We set out in this study to probe into the American family unit as depicted in Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie and F. Scot Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. This paper is premised on the hypothetical contention that the American family unit as depicted in the novels under study, has significantly disintegrated, and is in dire need of reconstruction. Individual and Ego Psychological theories constitute the theoretical framework for this paper. The theoretical framework informing the research is that of Collaborative Online International Learning COIL/VE as a strategy to develop Global Citizenship (GC) and Internationalization at Home (IaH) in the three institutions involved. The BRASUIS project involved 26 students from the universities involved and eight international scholars as guest speakers. The project included both synchronous and asynchronous exchanges carried out over 14 weeks. The methodology employed to analyze the impact of the BRASUIS project on the institution’s IaH and GC approach is qualitative, using content analysis to look at data from reflection reports and observations produced by the project participants and lecturers. Results of the analysis reveal a varying degree of institutionalised internationalisation when comparing Brazilian and Swiss institutions and suggest that the BRASUIS project made a significant contribution to the development of GC and IaH in the Brazilian institutions involved and though it was a teacher-led innovation, there is potential to institutionalize VE projects beyond individual teachers’ efforts in those institutions. Color words are often used metaphorically to express and understand the concepts of non-color domains. The research aims to explore the similarities and dissimilarities of metaphors in Chinese and English through examining the target domains (emotion, politics and economy domains) onto which Chinese “红” and English “red” map. It is found that there are more differences than similarities in metaphorical meanings between Chinese and English. The motivations behind these metaphorical meanings are also analyzed. Embodied philosophy brings rich implications for vocabulary teaching in college classroom. The research aims to analyzes the potential strategies of teaching vocabulary on the basis of experiential view of language. At the level of vocabulary teaching, teacher can improve students’ vocabulary memory effect from the motivations of physical experience, environmental experience and cultural experience behind vocabulary. At the level of morphology teaching, teacher can focus on explaining the formation of words regulated by cultural experience based on the experiential perspective to help students master the formation mechanism of words.
