We examined specifically whether analytic thinking style, anxiety, and intolerance of uncertainty account for socio-demographic variability in these dimensions of endorsement and to what extent stress from macro-level threatening circumstances moderates these effects. Two pre-registered studies conducted in Israel (N = 751) and the United States (N = 566) revealed that whereas relations of superstition endorsement with socio-demographic characteristics varied across samples, those with the psychological factors were quite robust. In both samples, analytic thinking style consistently mediated these relationships, intolerance of uncertainty mediated some of them, while anxiety mediated none. Experienced stress positively correlated with superstition endorsement, but evidence for its moderating role on the observed indirect effects was weak. These findings provide insights into the psychological and contextual factors shaping superstition endorsement.
","PeriodicalId":19834,"journal":{"name":"Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin","volume":" ","pages":"1461672251348772"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144743942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using data from the World Values Survey across 75 countries, the findings challenged the prevailing assumption that a social focus is inherently more adaptive for the economically disadvantaged. Instead, results suggested that personal-focused values were more advantageous in low (vs. high)-resource contexts. At the country level, the negative association between self-enhancement and wellness was attenuated or reversed in lower HDI countries. At the individual level, self-enhancement and openness to change were more positively-or less negatively-associated with wellness among lower-class individuals, while self-transcendence and conservation were more strongly associated with wellness among higher-class individuals. These findings highlight the context-dependent nature of value-wellness relationships and the social responsibility of those from more affluent backgrounds.
","PeriodicalId":19834,"journal":{"name":"Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin","volume":" ","pages":"1461672251352006"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144732675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We first evaluated the factor structure of the scale and demonstrated its unique predictive validity in classrooms (Studies 1 and 2), gyms (Studies 3 and 4), and the workplace (Study 5). When seeing classrooms with stereotypically masculine (vs. neutral) objects, women perceived less safety, which predicted less engagement, interest, and intentions to recruit others. When seeing an unwelcoming (vs. welcoming) gym, women (vs. men) perceived less safety, which predicted less engagement, interest, and intentions to recruit others, especially when the gym contained masculine (vs. feminine or gender-balanced) social cues. When seeing a boardroom with unwelcoming (vs. no) social cues, both men and women perceived greater threat, which predicted less intentions to recruit others. By disentangling within-person dynamics from between-person effects, the findings reveal that stronger-than-usual feelings of closeness predicted reduced perceptions of both realistic and symbolic threats over time. Conversely, heightened perceptions of realistic threat significantly undermine feelings of closeness, whereas symbolic threat demonstrates no substantial influence on subsequent closeness. These results underscore the centrality of realistic threats, reflecting concerns such as economic competition and resource allocation strains, in shaping intergroup attitudes in the studied context. By distinguishing between within- and between-person variances, and adopting a longitudinal framework, this study provides novel insights into the mechanisms underlying intergroup relations, offering a robust empirical contribution to the field.
","PeriodicalId":19834,"journal":{"name":"Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin","volume":" ","pages":"1461672251352899"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2025-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144708432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Children from different social class backgrounds watched short animated films depicting two cartoon characters making fair or unfair decisions in resource distribution scenarios. The results revealed that, compared to children from higher social classes, children from lower social classes were more likely to engage in TPIs in realistic distribution contexts. Moreover, when intervening, children from lower social class backgrounds were more inclined to both compensate victims and punish transgressors. In violent intergroup conflicts, such perceptions can be especially dangerous, as they may justify indiscriminate violence against the outgroup. The current research aims to address Jewish Israelis' perceptions of Palestinians' variability following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. We simultaneously conducted two intervention tournaments in which we examined the effectiveness of different interventions in increasing the perceived heterogeneity of Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip (N = 1,564) and of Palestinian citizens of Israel (N = 1,628). Several interventions (Outgroup empathy expression, Opinion variance, Internal criticism, Leadership-people distinction, and Moral exemplars) were found effective, suggesting that outgroup perceptions can be altered, even amid extreme violence. Yet, such collaboration remains rare due to self-interest. A recent study using a game simulating transport collaboration showed that measured perspective-taking (focusing on others) predicted greater inclusion in collaborations and higher earnings. In two experiments (N = 1,446), we experimentally induced perspective-taking for one party before the negotiation to test for comparable effects. While both experiments replicated the effects of measured perspective-taking in behaviors conducive to CO2 reduction (proposing larger coalitions and making more other-serving offers), neither replicated the economic benefits. This suggests that while both measured and induced perspective-taking influence coalition behavior similarly, only measured perspective-taking predicts favorable economic outcomes. Further analyses showed that experimentally inducing perspective-taking only leads to beneficial outcomes if participants actively engage in it. We apply reputation-based theories to predict when and why it occurs. As pre-registered, we predicted: (1) being observed would be associated with larger licensing effects and (2) unambiguous outcomes would have smaller licensing effects. In a multi-level meta-analysis of 115 experiments (N = 21,770), moral licensing was stronger when participants were observed (g = 0.65) than unobserved (g = 0.13). After accounting for publication bias with robust Bayesian meta-analysis, there was moderate evidence for licensing when participants were observed (g = 0.51; BF10 = 9.14), but moderate evidence against licensing when unobserved (Hedge's g = -0.01; BF10 = 0.11). Indeed, in an initial dyadic study of supervisors and their subordinates (N = 330), extraverts expressed their passion more strongly through these stereotypical expressions of passion, and observers perceived extraverts as more passionate than introverts. Across three studies (Ntotal = 1,373), we subsequently developed a more comprehensive passion expressions and behaviors scale (PEBS). Using this measure in a daily diary study (N = 206, k = 1,862), we found that extraverts not only expressed their passion in more stereotypical ways, but through a broader variety of expressions in general.
