Passion for journalism was typical of many prominent personalities of the early 20th century. V. Salskyi considered opinion journalism an essential element of educational activities, and under the war conditions – an effective method of ideological influence on the people, the formation of its national consciousness and patriotism. The military-political figure's first attempts in opinion journalism occurred in 1920, stimulated by his own experience of participation in World War I and the Ukrainian National Revolution, difficult domestic and foreign policy circumstances in Ukraine, and the struggle against Bolshevik Russia. The top of his journalistic career was the emigration period, especially in the second half of the 1920s. The publications with which V. Salskyi collaborated were considered, in particular, «Tabor», «Hurtuimosia», «Tryzub», «Za Derzhavnist».\u0000\u0000The minister's articles were united around national-state issues, the propaganda of patriotism, sincere faith in the Ukrainian cause's success, and, finally, the building of an independent united Ukraine. The central leitmotif of almost all publications is the army, the history of its formation, heroism in the national liberation struggle of 1917–1921, as well as the role in the further struggle for the realization of the national idea. V. Salskyi's articles are analyzed. His articles demonstrated the author's remarkable writing talent; his publications on military-political and military-historical topics showed in-depth knowledge of political science, theory and practice of military affairs, and international politics. V. Salskyi's opinion journalism played a significant role in popularizing the Ukrainian national idea and the development of cultural, educational, and national life of Ukrainians in exile.\u0000\u0000Keywords: Volodymyr Salskyi, Minister of War, journalism, «Tryzub», national idea.

Hrushevsky is a remarkable figure in the Ukrainian history of the late 19 – early 20th century. In recent decades there have been a lot of papers devoted to his scientific and political activities, personal life, and analysis of his scientific heritage. However, M. Hrushevsky's relations with the Ukrainian youth are still one of the unsolved aspects. The main idea of the article is an attempt to analyze the scientist's interpretation of the role and key tasks of the students in the process of national self-identification of the Ukrainians. The aims are to explore the nature of M. Hrushevsky's relationship with young people in educational, scientific, private spheres of life, and to specify the professor's contribution in the case of material support of youth.\u0000The scientist was clearly aware of the exceptional role and mission of youth in the processes of the Ukrainian nation formation and construction of the Ukrainian state, and therefore he tried to promote its establishment and development in every way. He was convinced that the youth is the bearer of the nation's potential and that the future of the Ukrainians depends on its character and well-being. M. Hrushevsky was assured that his own task and the task of the public are the creation of the conditions for the young generation formation, the development of such qualities as initiative, independence, creativity, and responsibility.\u0000The main sphere of relations between M. Hrushevsky and youth was education. In 1894 professor headed the World history department at the philosophy faculty at Lviv University, with a special emphasis on Eastern Europe. He believed that the main condition of the formation of the Ukrainian youth is the creation of the ability to get an education in the native language, as well as the opportunity of being involved in the scientific activity. M. Hrushevsky read original lecture courses in Ukrainian, which were attended by students of different faculties. At the university, he also conducted the practical classes ("historical exercises"), during which he tried to stimulate students' scientific activity and develop their critical view of the world. Professor had the private lessons, too, during which he provided students with the consultations, listened to the research works, and estimated those. Moreover, he allowed students to use his library.\u0000M. Hrushevsky encouraged young people to study science. In the summer of 1904, with the assistance of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, he founded in Lviv the Ukrainian academic vacation courses. The last ones gave to the Ukrainian youth the opportunity to meet and communicate with the Ukrainian scientists from Galicia and the Dnieper Ukraine. M. Hrushevsky himself taught courses on the history of Ukraine. The professor encouraged students to work in the archives and collect materials for the research. He helped them to obtain permission to work in the archives in different countries and searched the financial support for suc

The study of combinatorics in the Ukrainian language of the 16th–18th centuries based on one-type phrases actualizes in the future the need to compare lexical-syntactic combinatorial changes in the Ukrainian language at different stages of its development as a necessary condition for creating a synthetic study on compatibility.\u0000\u0000The scientific novelty of the thesis is that the first time combinatorics (compatibility) in the Ukrainian language of the 16th–18th centuries was studied comprehensively on the basis of combinatorial linguistics in combination with cognitive linguistics, substantive phrases. Special attention is paid to the activities of scientists of the Jan Kazimierz University of Lviv and the Shevchenko Scientific Society in this research branch. Archaeological excavations of the period carried out by the conservator Bohdan Janusz, who represented the State Group of Conservators of Prehistoric Sites, are presented separately. In particular, this refers to the excavations in Holyn' near Kalush at the settlement of the Carpathian Tumuli culture.\u0000\u0000During the Second Commonwealth of Poland, several sites were discovered and researched, including burial complexes in Hryniv, Kolokolyn, Luchka, settlements in Zalistsi, Holyn', Holigrady, and Novosilka Kostiukova, and other important sites. The works of Yaroslav Pasternak, Markiian Smishko, Tadeusz Sulimirski, Kazimierz Majewski, and other archeologists were significant at this time. Their important contribution to the development of methodology and practice of research of sites of the first centuries A.D was noted.\u0000\u0000It is concluded that in the interwar period a process of formation of modern archaeology took place. There was a large number of planned field excavations for which relevant permits from the conservator were obtained, the processing of the results became systemic, and the analysis of discovered materials was conducted with the involvement of the whole set of available methods.\u0000\u0000Most of the research results were published by the authors of the excavations, which allowed them to transfer all the results of fieldwork to descendants as much as possible. The tragedy («Ilovaisk cattle») was in surrounding a group of Ukrainian troops about 1,200 soldiers by the regular units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (RF Armed Forces) and Russian terrorist groups near Ilovaisk, Donetsk region. While leaving the «cattle» through the humanitarian corridor, the Ukrainian soldiers came under shelling by the Russian side. Pro-government circles saw among the causes of such a tragic situation the treachery of the Russian leadership. Previously having agreed with Kyiv that it would release Ukrainian fighters from the encirclement, it eventually committed the shootings. Another reason was the betrayal of some Ukrainian soldiers who deserted from defensive positions, creating for the enemy favorable conditions to encircle. The participants of the events, experts, media partly accused the Ukrainian state and military leadership of inertia, passivity, and ignoring reports about the need for reinforcements. However, some military analysts acknowledged that the Ukrainian military command had done everything possible in the circumstances. Along with Russian intervention as the main part in the Ilovaisk tragedy, some experts saw a benefit for some Ukrainian politicians, as the constant threat factor could be used in the run-up canvassing to the October 2014 snap parliamentary elections. Finally, the criminal case concerning the Ilovaisk tragedy, which continues up today, has already been assessed by the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (GPU). According to assessment, the deaths of Ukrainian soldiers and the loss of weapons and military equipment near Ilovaisk were directly connected with the actions of the RF Armed Forces, which on August 23-24, 2014, treacherously invaded the Donetsk region and murdered Ukrainian soldiers. It was concluded that the Ilovaisk tragedy had not only hard military but also political consequences for the country, in particular, due to the adoption of the Minsk agreements under the pressure of the tragedy, which showed itself in an imperfect «truce», which, was repeatedly violated by the enemy.\u0000\u0000Keywords: Ilovaisk tragedy, Ukrainian public opinion, politicum, mass media, expert circles, Ukraine, Russia.
