The methodological basis of the work is the complex approach to understanding Olena Pchilka’s personality in the light of the memories of her relatives, acquaintances, and colleagues. The relevance of the article is caused by the increasing interest of scholars in such memoirs in general and the need to study the life of Olena Pchilka as a writer, scientist, editor, publisher and an active public figure in particular. The author portrays Olha Drahomanova-Kosach emphasizing the basic human qualities of her character and with the aim of a further perspective of compiling her biography. The materials of the study will also help to deeper estimate Elena Pchilka, who is traditionally until nowadays, regarded only in the context of researching the life and literary activities of her daughter, Lesia Ukrainka.\u0000\u0000Keywords\u0000Olena Pchilka, biography, memoirs, contemporaries, family, portrait.

The author has collected materials about Larysa Kosach-Kvitka’s correspondents from the circle of Serhii Merzhynskyi’s relatives and friends: Konstantin Merzhynskyi, Serhii Eliasberg, Viera Alexandrova, and Yevhenii Chirikov. The case study focuses on the digitized documents of that period, which are now stored in the National Historical Archive of Belarus (Minsk) and the Russian State Historical Archive (St. Petersburg), and previously published record-keeping books of the Russian Empire (lists of nobles and landowners of the Minsk province, ranks of state control of the country in the early XX century). The little-known biographical data of the writer's acquaintances, with whom she contacted in person in Minsk and corresponded after returning from Belarus, have been supplemented with details. The circumstances and nature of Lesia Ukrainka's communication with each of these addressees are clarified, adding some hues to their portraits. The article provides brief information about the future fate of the playwright's Minsk correspondents. The author sheds light on the causes of insufficient study of this issue in the Soviet period by stating that they are partly connected with the noble origin of the addressees or with their civil position after the October coup of 1917, in particular, regarding the Merzhynskyi and Chirikov families. The key findings of the research argue the need for further biography study of Lesia Ukrainka's correspondents, the results of which will be beneficial for the compilers of the encyclopedia of the writer, the compilation of which was discussed at the events devoted to the 150th anniversary of the playwright's birth.

In 1946, the Soviet state security authorities accused her of being a «parricide» and a member of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). The article's relevance is due to the need to determine whether V. Zhurbenko was an OUN member. The article also illustrates the illegal mechanisms used by the Soviet repressive authorities. The research's main source was the V. Zhurbenko's archival-criminal case, which is stored in the Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Lviv region. As a result of the study, it was found that V. Zhurbenko participated in the activities of one of the OUN grassroots units in Dnipropetrovsk in early 1943. She did not join the OUN, but her contacts with OUN's member N. Voronina, who was also an agent of Soviet special services, played a tragic role in her later life. Having received a pedagogical education, V. Zhurbenko worked in the incomplete secondary school of the village Khidnovychi in the Drohobych region. In late 1944 – early 1945, she corresponded with N. Voronina. She was arrested in October 1946. During the investigation, V. Zhurbenko was forced to confess to belonging to the OUN. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Soviet concentration camps. After J. Stalin's death, when the totalitarian regime weakened somewhat, V. Zhurbenko tried to achieve justice. As a result, her case was double-checked (in 1955 and 1959), and eventually, V. Zhurbenko was rehabilitated. She was able to prove that the criminal case against her had been fabricated by an MGB investigator who had used the beating and threats. Thus, the authors found out that V. Zhurbenko was not a member of the OUN, although some contemporary historians were convinced that she belonged to this organization.\u0000\u0000Keywords: Varvara Zhurbenko, MGB, OUN, Dnipropetrovsk, Drohobych region, military tribunal, rehabilitation.

Competing for influence in the political arena, this party, with its inherent conformism, was able to gain the support of the Polish government and regain control of its societies: Stauropegion, «People’s House», «Halychyna-Ruthenian Matica». The problem of fighting for the right to the «People’s House» – the only society for which government commissioners were appointed – has long gripped all Ukrainian politics, becoming the cause of inter-party conflicts and intra-party quarrels of Russophiles, the issue of political bargaining between parties and government in election battles, an indicator of relations with the state and one of the main public discourses.\u0000\u0000It is shown that the struggle for the «People's House» was an important prerequisite for the split of the «Russian People's Organization» (RPO) in 1926. A group of people led by M. Bachynskyi, L. Cherkavskyi, and O. Lysiak left the RPO and founded the Russian Agrarian Party (RAP), explaining this by the desire to create a «healthy opposition» to the Russophile leadership and more actively defend the rights of the peasantry. RAP members enlisted the support of Polish government officials to seize the «People’s House» and win seats in the 1928 and 1930 elections. In the elections to the Sejm and the Senate in 1928, with the assistance of the Polish government, the RPO and the RAP united, but never received a single mandate. In the 1930 election campaigns, the RAP ran on the same electoral list as the pro-government BB party and won two seats.\u0000\u0000An attempt is made to please the Polish authorities with the head of the RAP M. Bachynskyi, who declared the difference between the ideology of his political force and all Russophilia, positioning its members as «Ruthenians» who, unlike the RPO, did not seek unification with Russia (but at the same time they continued to profess the idea of the unity of the «Russian» people and used the term «Russian» to mean Ukrainians of Halychyna).\u0000\u0000M. Bachynskyi's anti-Ukrainian position on complex aspects of Ukrainian-Polish relations is highlighted. This Russophile figure negatively assessed the patriotic Ukrainian forces, including the GCC, which he accused of not stopping the Polish-Ukrainian war of 1918–1919 by its clergy. He also did not condemn the «pacification» carried out by the Polish government against the Ukrainian population, opposed the introduction of national identifiers «Ukrainian», «Ukraine» and others. For the first time, the archives of the Stanislav Voivodeship show attempts by the Polish authorities to support Russophiles from the RAP, calling the members of this party «Ruthenians», just as the Poles called the entire Ukrainian people.\u0000\u0000It was the agreement policy and unpopularity among the masses that led to the

The history of the war in relation to cities is a less researched topic. Many open questions regarding the history of Berehove still need to be clarified, including the period of the Rákóczi War of Independence. The aim of our research is to present a section of the historical past of the town of Berehove with the help of new archival sources, which show the uniqueness of the history of our region and the country. The centre of Bereg County was the third scene of the Kuruc flag-unfolding. On the one hand, the modest source base, on the other hand, the unanswered questions raised make our theme topical. In order to reconstruct the contemporary history of Berehove, we used primary sources and contemporary diaries, which are available in the Transcarpathian State Archives. Therefore, we present the events with the help of archive sources and academic literature. Berehove’s role in the war of independence is significant as it was the first town to get under the insurgents’ rule, Ferenc Rákóczi II also maintained a castle here and many inhabitants of the town became Kuruc warriors. In our study, we processed the transition of Berehove, the first Kuruc town, to the side of the war of independence and the consequences of this. The chief judge of the town, in whose hands the military or police force was not yet concentrated at the time, was among the first to stand by the side of the national liberation war, followed by several residents of the town after the flag-unfolding. The results include a description of the letters written to the prince by the people of the town and the answer given to them, where the most burning problems of the poor city dwellers appear. Furthermore, tracking the fate of the town’s chief judge after the war of independence is also described in the paper. Berehove has preserved the cult of the Rákóczi War of Independence for centuries, as many monuments testify to this day and it is revived every year.

Hrushevskyi's early interest in Ukrainian activities in his youth. He considered sub-Austrian Halychyna a potential center of the national movement under the «Ems Ukaz» (Ems decree) of 1876 and repressions against Ukrainians in Russia. As stressed, in the diary, which the young Mykhailo kept since 1883, he regularly wrote down his impressions of events in Halychyna. Under the ideological influence of V. Antonovych, O. Konyskyi, and I. Nechui-Levytskyi, through the mediation of members of Kyiv society «Stara hromada», he, in the mid-1880s, he worked out the relationships with the Halychyna populists (O. Barvinskyi, I . Belei and others), and was published in the local press. With the I. Nechui-Levytskyi's support, in June 1885, was published the first article of M. Hrushevskyi in the newspaper «Dilo».\u0000\u0000Later he repeatedly published his works in the updated magazine «Pravda» (since 1888), which became an all-Ukrainian periodical (published in Lviv since 1867, intermittently).\u0000\u0000It was discovered that at the suggestion of O. Konyskyi M. Hrushevskyi prepared an article under the pseudonym M. Serhienko, which opened the first volume of «Notes of Shevchenko Scientific Society» in 1892 and marked the beginning of his many-years collaboration with scientific journals in Halychyna.\u0000\u0000Furthermore, highlighted that M. Hrushevskyi, as well as ukrainophiles of Naddniprianshchyna (the territory of Ukraine, which was part of the Russian Empire), to create the best conditions for the development of Ukrainian national movement in Halychyna, supported the policy of the Polish-Ukraine mutual support, known in history as the «New Era» (1890–1894).\u0000\u0000In the context of the «New Era» policy, from 1891, M. Hrushevskyi's moving to Halychyna to head the Department of History of Ukraine at the Lviv University, was discussed. People of Halychyna insisted on the candidacy of Professor V. Antonovych, who was a scientific supervisor of M. Hrushevskyi; I. Belei and O. Barvinskyi even visited Kyiv in 1893 to persuade him to agree to move to Halychyna, but to no avail. In the autumn of 1894, M. Hrushevskyi on the recommendation of V. Antonovych, for patriotic reasons, headed the newly created department, which started a new Halychyna period in his life and work (until 1913). The scientist's multifaceted activity is revealed, which was an essential tool for constructing the historical memory of Ukrainians: he contributed to the organization of extensive publishing activities in the Ukrainian language, the development of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, founded his historical school, a prominent representative of which was I.
