There are different successful approaches to the teaching of grammar, which might be interesting to explore. Aside from the famous traditional grammar teaching, there are others such as communicate approach to grammar teaching, isolated and integrated approach, as well combination of both isolated and integrated grammar teaching. The current study is interested in exploring the different views on grammar teaching as well as understanding how English teachers perceive grammar teaching itself.The result of the recent study has been able to give insights that grammar is still considered important by a group of people that has been trained in a specific course of grammar teaching (pedagogical grammar class). Recognizing the standpoint of a group of people who will be assigned the role of teachers is important, because it suggests how grammar will be taught in future language classrooms.","PeriodicalId":194512,"journal":{"name":"Journal Polingua: Scientific Journal of Linguistic Literatura and Education","volume":"216 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132148025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This was a survey to twelve Indonesian students at their first year at Flinders University. The survey used adapted and revised questionnaire about autonomous learning which was answered on-line by respondents. Survey Gizmo was utilized for this purpose. Analysis of the data by using SPSS ver. 15.0 showed that most Indonesian students from various different background such as gender, age, hometown, occupation, and field of study have already aware of autonomous learning at almost the same level. Little different of autonomous learning level appeared on the comparison to hometowns of respondents. Respondents from Java had higher level of autonomous learning than those from outside Java. Since this study involved small proportion of Indonesian students in a specific place of Australia, similar study needs to be conducted with wider scope to find out the real condition.","PeriodicalId":194512,"journal":{"name":"Journal Polingua: Scientific Journal of Linguistic Literatura and Education","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129253179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teaching mathematics and science in English, in this context, is the teachers’ use of English as amedium of instruction in delivering the content subjects: mathematics, biology, chemsitry and physics. In particular, teachers use English in order to open classes/greet students, review previous topics, inform topic(s) to be learned, ask questions, answer questions, explain concepts, give directions, and do parting, all of which are embodied in words, phrases and sentences. However, these classroom activities might not be easily accomplished as teachers’ English skills are not well prepared. Since they are not the English specialists, they likely use strategies in their classroom communication with their students. They use strategies in order to make their messages comprehensible to students. Their “language” (words, expressions, phrases, and sentences) should be simple and understandable so that students can figure out what is presented and taught easily. This paper is intended to report a case study on (1) types of communication strategies employed by the teachers in teaching mathematics, chemistry, and biology in English; and (2) why they use such kinds of communication strategies in teaching mathematics, chemistry, and biology in English. The data obtained from observations (through videotaping), interviews, and questionnaires indicate that the teachers deploy several communication strategies with different reasons in teaching","PeriodicalId":194512,"journal":{"name":"Journal Polingua: Scientific Journal of Linguistic Literatura and Education","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131172433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The term of English as an International Language, or EIL has been growing in TESOL field. And then, the issue about teaching focus is still fresh to discuss. The variety of cultures using English has stirred the language teaching to focus on the language use instead of the language form. Finally, technology implication such as online learning in TESOL classrooms is now increasing. To sum up, the issues link much with the importance of intercultural competence in second language teaching; therefore, some adaptations to the ELT teaching method in EFL context such as in Indonesia need to be adopted.","PeriodicalId":194512,"journal":{"name":"Journal Polingua: Scientific Journal of Linguistic Literatura and Education","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125848297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
