In addition, discrimination and stigma related to obesity remain widespread in our society. In this scenario, the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity (SEEDO), in collaboration with 38 recognized scientific societies and 12 patients' organization, has elaborated the Spanish guideline for obesity management in adults, referred to as the GIRO guideline. GIRO aims to drive a shift in obesity management and serve as a guide for healthcare professionals (HCPs) to address this chronic and multifactorial disease.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A comprehensive systematic review was conducted and completed with experts' contribution, with a particular focus on Spanish society. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. Existing studies have suggested that cholecystectomy may be linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, though there is yet to be quality investigation of its associations with important ectopic fat depots - hepatic fat and intrapancreatic fat. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship of cholecystectomy with both hepatic and intrapancreatic fat.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The study involved 367 participants who underwent abdominal scanning, with hepatic and intrapancreatic fat quantified using gold-standard MRI-based methods. Linear regression analyses were adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, BMI, fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin, triglyceride, LDL-C, and HDL-C.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>In the most adjusted model, cholecystectomy was significantly negatively associated with hepatic fat (β coefficient = -3.671; p = 0.019) but not intrapancreatic fat (β coefficient = 0.133; p = 0.586). In analyses stratified by BMI, this association with hepatic fat was significant in the obese group only (β coefficient = -7.163; p = 0.048). The association with intrapancreatic fat was not influenced by BMI.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Cholecystectomy is significantly associated with lower hepatic fat in obese individuals. This study aimed to examine the association between obesity and dental caries in adults using a nationally representative sample.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This study employed data of US adults aged >20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) pre-pandemic cycle. Obesity was defined using the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. Dental caries were assessed using the Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (DMFT) scores.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Most participants were categorized as individuals with obesity based on the WHR (74.5%) or BMI (72.7%). A significant difference in the DMFT scores and missing teeth was observed between individuals with normal weight and individuals with obesity. After adjusting for the sociodemographic variables, individuals with obesity had a 0.11 higher DMFT score (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.01 to 0.23). A significant association was observed between the WHR and DMFT scores when age was excluded from the model, demonstrating a higher coefficient of 0.17 (95% CI: 0.05-0.30).</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>A positive association was observed between obesity and dental caries in the US adult population. However, age was found to be a confounding factor in this relationship. Economic impact of overweight and obesity has not yet been investigated in Türkiye at a national level. This study aimed to investigate the impact of obesity on healthcare costs in Türkiye and to estimate the overall national economic burden of obesity.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The study was based on a cross-sectional analysis of retrospectively pooled data from 2009 to 2014 payer claims data and 2014-2019 Türkiye Health Survey (THS). In the first step, obesity-related annual per person overall health expenditures in adults with obesity were calculated and calculations were also made in subgroups of payer and healthcare categories. In the second step, using the developed model, the national economic disease burden of adult obesity was estimated, along with the projections for the estimated expenditures over the next 30 years. Economic values were adjusted according to US dollar values of 2021 purchasing power parities (PPPs) (PPP 1.0 = 2.782 TRY).</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The annual healthcare costs were significantly higher in individuals with obesity than in those with normal body mass index (BMI) (odds ratio 1.243; 95% confidence interval: 1.206-1.281), and the cost increment was positively correlated with higher BMI (by 117% in class I obesity vs. 169% in class III obesity, p < 0.001). In the year 2021, obesity-related direct and indirect costs in adults were estimated to be PPP 27.4 billion and 39.5 billion, respectively. The total economic burden was estimated to be PPP 66.9 billion, which is equivalent to 2.6% of gross national product. Direct medical cost of obesity corresponds to 8.4% of total health expenditure in Türkiye.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Obesity is both an individual and social health problem, which emphasizes the potential role of a range of stakeholders, besides the health sector, in addressing this problem. Moreover, parents generally misunderstand their children's weight status. The correct perception of overweight/obesity in early childhood is very important for children's growth and development. The purpose of this study was to investigate parental perceptions of children's weight status.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>We analyzed data from a questionnaire study conducted among 1,971 preschool children in local kindergartens from December 1, 2021, to January 31, 2022, and classified the participants as having non-overweight and overweight/obesity according to the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) criteria. Parents were asked whether they perceived their children to have non-overweight or overweight/obesity. We analyzed the related factors that parents underestimated or overestimated their children's weight status.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The rate of overweight/obesity in preschool children was 17.9%. Parental perceptions of children's weight status were inconsistent with children's real weight (kappa = 0.351, p < 0.001). The correctness of mother's perceptions of children's weight was higher than that of father's. Among children who were affected by overweight/obesity, 68.5% of parents underestimated their children's weights. Mothers with overweight/obesity had a 1.56 times greater risk of underestimating the children's weight than mothers who were affected by non-overweight (p = 0.010, odds ratio: 1.56, 95% confidence interval: 1.11-2.18). Children's sex and families with siblings were independent risk factors for parents to overestimate children's weight.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Parents were highly likely to misinterpret the weight status of their children who were affected by overweight/obesity. Yet, evidence regarding the association between long-term stress and levels of appetite-regulating hormones in humans is lacking.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>We included 65 patients with obesity (44 women) to investigate the cross-sectional association of long-term biological stress (scalp hair cortisol and cortisone) and long-term psychological stress (Perceived Stress Scale) with overnight-fasted serum levels of the hormonal appetite regulators leptin, adiponectin, insulin, pancreatic polypeptide, gastric-inhibitory peptide, peptide tyrosine-tyrosine, cholecystokinin and agouti-related protein, adjusted for age, sex, and body mass index.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Hair cortisone and, in trend, hair cortisol were positively associated with cholecystokinin (p = 0.003 and p = 0.058, respectively). No other associations between stress measures and hormonal appetite regulators were observed.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Long-term biological stress, measured using scalp hair glucocorticoid levels, is associated with elevated levels of circulating cholecystokinin. This study aimed to ascertain the specific association between obesity and wet OAB for females and males using five obesity measures.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This cross-sectional study included 29,041 participants from the 2005-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. The outcome was the risk of wet OAB. Five obesity measures were exposure using quintile, including body mass index (BMI), waist-to-stature ratio (WSR), body fat percentage (BFP), fat mass, and lean mass. The associations were elucidated using weighted logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The elevated BMI, WSR, BFP, and fat mass were positively associated with the risk of wet OAB in both sexes, which was evident in females. Interestingly, lean mass was adversely associated with the risk of wet OAB in both sexes. In RCS analysis about BMI, WSR, BFP, and fat mass, monotonically increasing nonlinear associations were found in males, while positive linear associations were found in females. Besides, negative linear and nonlinear relationships were shown between lean mass and the risk of wet OAB in females and males, respectively.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Obesity was positively associated with the risk of wet OAB in both sexes. This study aimed to analyze the pain experience and mental health impairments of youths with extreme obesity compared to those with mild and moderate obesity (BMI=30-39.9) by considering gender differences.METHODSCross-sectional data of 431 youths (M=16.6; SD=2.3; 53.1% female) were analyzed. Of these, 159 (36.8%) youths were characterized by extreme obesity. Self-reported sociodemographic data, pain-related variables, depression, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were assessed with standardized questionnaires. Data were analyzed with univariate tests and logistic regression models.RESULTSYouths with extreme obesity reported more pain in the last 4 weeks (p=.018), increased pain-related impairments in daily life (p=.009), more pain-related days of absence (p=.030), higher depression scores (p = .030), and reduced HRQoL (p=.005) compared to youths with mild and moderate obesity. In regression models, extreme obesity and pain in the last 4 weeks were associated when additionally including sex and age in the model (odds ratio 1.88; 95 % confidence interval 1.16 - 30.40, p=.010). In the subgroup of extreme obesity (n=159), women (n=83) reported more pain in the last 4 weeks (p=.001), higher depression scores (p<.001), and lower HRQoL (p<.001) compared to men (n=76).CONCLUSIONThese findings underpin the need for standardized assessments of pain and mental health, especially in the treatment of female youths with extreme obesity. This study aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the research landscape in the field of obesity and asthma.METHODSA bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection database to identify papers published on obesity and asthma between 2013 and 2023. VOSviewer software was utilized for statistical analysis and visualization of collaborative networks, research trends, literature sources, citation analysis, co-citation analysis, and keyword analysis.RESULTSA total of 3406 records from 1010 journals authored by 17347 researchers affiliated with 4573 institutes across 117 countries and regions were retrieved. The number of publications and citations increased annually. The United States and China contributed the majority of records. Major nodes in the collaboration network map included Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, University of Newcastle, Karolinska Institution, University of Toronto, and Seoul National University. Prolific authors included Anne E. Dixon, Erick Forno, Lisa G. Wood, Deepa Rastogi, and Fernando Holguin. Research trends and hotspots focused on metabolism studies, Mendelian randomization, gut microbiome, inflammation response, gene, biomarker research, and comorbidities were identified as potential future research frontiers.CONCLUSIONThis study provides a comprehensive overview of the current research status and trends in the field of obesity and asthma. The aim of the present study was to investigate long-term weight development following children participating in one of two pragmatic family-centered lifestyle interventions for children with obesity. Methods This real-life observational study included Danish children 4-17 years of age classified as having obesity. Data from 2010-2020, from two community-based family-centered lifestyle interventions (designated hereafter as the Aarhus- and the Randers-intervention) were merged with national registers and routine health check-ups, including height and weight. Adjusted mixed effect models were used to model changes in Body Mass Index (BMI) z-score. We performed exploratory analyses of the development in BMI z-score within stratified subgroups of children treated in the interventions before investigating potential effect modifications induced by sex, age, family structure, socioeconomic or immigration status. Results With a median follow-up of 2.8 years (interquartile range: 1.3;4.8), 703 children participated in an intervention (445 the Aarhus-intervention; 258 the Randers-intervention) and 2,337 children were not invited to participate (no-intervention). Children in both interventions experienced a comparable reduction in BMI z-scores during the first 6 months compared to the no-intervention group (Aarhus-intervention: -0.12 SD/year and Randers-intervention: -0.25 SD/year). Only children in the Randers-intervention reduced their BMI z-score throughout follow-up (Aarhus-intervention vs. no-intervention: 0.01 SD/year; CI:-0.01;0.04; Randers-intervention vs. no-intervention: -0.05 SD/year; CI:-0.08;-0.02). In a subgroup comparisons combining the two interventions, family income below the median (-0.05 SD/year, CI: -0.02;-0.09), immigrant background (0.04 SD/year, CI: 0.00; 0.07), or receiving intervention less than one year (0.04 SD/year, CI: 0.00;0.08) were associated with a yearly change in BMI z-score. In addition, effect modification analyses did not observe any interaction by sex, age, family structure, socioeconomic or immigration. Conclusions Although the more dynamic intervention with longer duration obtained and sustained a minor reduction in BMI z-score, the clinical impact may only be modest.
