The crack propagation behaviors on two different slip planes ({1 1 0} and {2 1 1}) have been investigated. A self-adaptive time step algorithm has been proposed to increase the stability of the simulations. It has been found that the slip plane significantly affects the propagation speed of the crack.","PeriodicalId":192889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122254656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This microfluidic device was tested for electrochemical glucose detection, and the results showed that the glucose can be detected with a linear response up to a concentration of 5times10-3 mol L-1. Because of the small amounts of fluids and enzyme used in microchannels, this approach offers a number of technical advantages, such as portability, shorter analysis time and lower consumption of expensive analytes.","PeriodicalId":192889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130178877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have directly grown Ge QDs by physical vapour deposition (PVD) on Si(111), Si(100) and some of its vicinal surfaces and studied innovative bottom up techniques to order such nanostructures. Specifically, we harnessed naturally occurring instabilities due to reconstruction and intrinsic anisotropic diffusion in Si bare surfaces, such as step bunching and natural steps occurring in silicon vicinal surfaces, to order the QDs both in one dimension and in the plane. We have also shown the use of controlled quantities of surfactants, like Sb, dramatically improves the desired ordering. Moreover, we have assisted these self-assembling processes using top-down approaches like Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling and STM nanoindentation to control the nucleation sites and the density of the Ge QDs. Real-time study of growth and self-assembly has been accomplished using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy imaging in UHV. An explanation of the occurring processes is given, and a software routine is used to quantify the ordering of the QDs both in pre-patterned and bare surfaces. Applications, mainly in the field of Nanocrystal Nonvolatile Memories, are discussed.","PeriodicalId":192889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127170707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Principle Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to the SIMS data, revealing chemical changes to the surfaces, in particular the extent of hydrogenation. The hydrogen content of the HOPG surface is observed to increase with systematic increases in power of the plasma treatment. These results are supported by Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA) measurements that show a similar increase in hydrogen content. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) measurements provide insight into the morphological changes to the surface caused by the treatment, via investigating plasma-created features that are observed to increase in coverage with the increases in plasma power.","PeriodicalId":192889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122485960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When different laser excitation wavelengths were used: namely, 1064 nm, and 532 nm; the observed PL emission yield changed substantially. Since the excitation volumes of these two wavelengths are significantly different in silicon due to sample absorption, they provide a means of probing defect related luminescence as a function of the excitation depth. An additional advantage of using the 1064 nm excitation is the inclusion of the phononic silicon (Raman) band which overlaps with the PL spectrum allowing it to be used as a scattering quantum counter. This provides a means of normalising the luminescence yield for samples prepared under different conditions.","PeriodicalId":192889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133175875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We compared the time dependences of the drain current for direct current (DC) measurement and alternating current (AC) measurement with a lock-in amplifier. Drain-current fluctuations were highly suppressed by the AC with lock-in method in the small gate voltage regime. On the other hand, the current fluctuations for DC measurements were not so suppressed even if the integration time was increased from 80 mus to 10 ms. The frequency dependence of the current noise power spectra of the DC measurements was approximately 1/f while that of the AC measurement was approximately 1/f2. These results indicate that the use of AC with a lock-in amplifier is very suitable for the suppression of current fluctuations.","PeriodicalId":192889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121594092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We model the van der Waals forces utilizing the Lennard-Jones potential and assume that the carbon atoms are uniformly distributed over the surface of the carbon nanotube, so that a discrete sum of the atomic potential energy between the carbon atom and the molecule can be approximated by a line integral. The circular orbiting frequency of the system can be estimated by investigating the minimum energy configuration of the effective potential energy. An instability calculation is performed to ensure that the circular orbit remains stable, and the classification of the atompsilas possible loci is determined numerically. We find that the circular orbiting frequency of the proposed system reaches the gigahertz regime, which suggests that such a system has potential to be utilized as an ideal device in future technological development. We also briefly show that the results obtained from the above system can be extended to a fullerene orbiting around the outside of a carbon nanotube without conceptual difficulties, but with increased mathematical complexity.","PeriodicalId":192889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129930940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To explore the influence of nano-scale surface roughness on bacterial attachment this study utilized as-received and chemically treated glass surfaces as substrata for bacterial adsorption. Surface modification via chemical etching resulted in a 70% decrease in the nano-scale roughness of the glass surface with no alteration of its chemical composition. We have observed that bacteria belonging to three different taxa, while adhering to the modified surface, exhibited similar attachment tendencies to the un-modified substratum, however the number of attached cells increased threefold. The increase in extent of attachment was also associated with bacterial morphologic and metabolic changes. The results obtained suggest that nano-scale surface roughness might strongly influence bacterial attachment.","PeriodicalId":192889,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology","volume":"47 15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130710339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
