The waveform implements a coherent BPSK modulation with a rate 1/2 turbo code on a software radio test-bed. All baseband transmitter and receiver functions are performed by software modules hosted on commercial hardware, specifically programmable digital signal processors and a general-purpose microprocessor. The software radio interfaces with standard UHF satellite communications transceivers at their 70 MHz intermediate frequency. Bit error rate performance is measured and compared with laboratory hardware loop-back tests and Monte Carlo simulations.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. The proposed SPT-SLCMV is an improved version of an SPT-LCMV beam-former as it can minimize the degree of freedom loss and eliminate the desired signal cancellation phenomenon under coherent interference situations. These advantages are obtained by successively applying sub-constraint matrices divided from a whole constraint matrix to remove any correlation between the desired and interference signals. As a result, the proposed beamformer can solve the degree of freedom loss while maintaining the performance of the conventional SPT-LCMV beamformer.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. This program was conceived to address the need for secure, seamless, multimedia, on-the-move communications across heterogeneous ad-hoc and infrastructure-based wireless/wireline networks in a highly dynamic environment. In the target environment the communicating entities are moving, and the infrastructure itself is also mobile. This dictates the need to provide continuous and uninterrupted communications services through smooth handoffs among multiple wireless networks with similar characteristics on the ground (called horizontal handoff) and through smooth handoffs among multiple near-ground and space networks with widely varying characteristics (called vertical handoff). In support of this program, Rockwell Collins is extending and integrating current commercial and DoD ad hoc networking technologies to provide new capabilities to support improved mobility and quality of service for the next generation Tactical Internet (TI). This paper describes the system concepts, the advanced networking technologies, and the wideband Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) prototype that is used to demonstrate them.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. In the proposed scheme, the well-known constrained minimum output energy (MOE) detector is designed under the condition that the frequency offset estimate of the desired user is known. Then, the frequency offset estimate is obtained by searching for the value which maximizes the output energy of the conditional MOE detector. Finally, the frequency offset estimate is used for the conditional MOE weight vector, and the joint work is completed. The analytical expression for the estimation error of the proposed frequency offset estimator is derived and compared with simulation results. Other simulation results show that the frequency offset estimate is very close to the true value and the bit error rate (BER) of the proposed scheme is comparable to that of the MOE detector with perfect frequency offset compensation.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. These applications demand greater communication capacity generally accompanied by an associated increase in required spectrum. Mobile tactical satellite terminals support the warfighter and typically use smaller aperture antennas, often referred to as \"disadvantaged\". Non-processing (\"bent pipe\") satellite transponders operate with limits on bandwidth and power. Typical usage drives the operator to trade-off between power and bandwidth to maximize transponder efficiency. The cases for power-limited and bandwidth-limited transponder use lead to some interesting observations, and hence, directions for optimizing satellite utilization. While higher order modulation waveforms can better serve the larger terminals by increasing their bandwidth utilization, smaller tactical terminals suffer from limited satellite transponder power. This paper details several examples for bandwidth and power limited cases with particular attention given to optimizing the warfighter's satellite usage. A recently developed and proven waveform known as the advanced waveform provides the warrior the capability to double the effective data rate, or double the number of terminals under the satellite or halve the antenna aperture size.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Simulations are often performed in a digital computer using a simulation environment or directly programming in C or Fortran. With error rates down to 10/sup -12/ simulation times can be prohibitively long and with the new forward error correcting (FEC) codes BERs down to 10/sup -17/ could be considered. This paper describes an environment, which significantly reduces simulation times. It is based on a platform that utilizes field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology. FPGAs can be programmed to carry out operations in parallel so all of the components in a communication link can be implemented directly. Also the speed of operation of FPGAs are such that most parts Of the link can be operated in real time. In some applications faster than real time may be possible. The FPGA type of environment also provides convenient interfaces to the real world. Therefore real parts of a communication system can be easily added and provide \"in-situ\" simulations. Also direct comparisons can be made with the totally simulated counterpart. The paper presents a typical application concentrating on one component of a communication system. In this case, a convolutional encoder and Viterbi decoder. The information to be transmitted is simulated using a pseudo random noise generator core in the FPGA. Different distributions of noise are added to the link in appropriate places to simulate real noise effects and the demodulated, decoded output of the communication channel is compared with the original input. Speed-ups of several orders of magnitude can be realized with this system and runs taking days may be reduced to just several seconds of operation.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Military networks have requirements for security, jamming and spoofing resistance, voice transmissions, and range that are often not feasible to achieve with off-the-shelf commercial products. These networks may also require multiple users to share a variety of services such as file transfer, e-mail, situational awareness reports, and voice over a single channel. Performance is often limited by the number of devices and interfaces at each station. With software-defined radios that incorporate unprecedented digital signal processing power, coupled with industry standard interfaces such as the Internet protocol (IP), the radio chassis can literally become a \"system in a box\". Channel access protocols can also benefit greatly from being integrated with the radio modem. The RF Communications Division of Harris Corporation has developed a black-side (post-encryption) channel access protocol based on the well-known MACA protocol. This protocol performs well on real-world networks facing such challenges as voice priority over data, \"hidden nodes\", and varying channel conditions. Wireless IP networking capability based on this protocol has been implemented and fielded in Harris's software-defined Falcon II Tactical Radios. This paper discusses the benefits/tradeoffs of embedded black-side channel access protocols and presents test results from a typical military communication system based on the Harris RF-5800V-MP radio.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Unfortunately, most tactical command and control vehicles only have line of sight (LOS) tactical radios that are severely range-limited. These tactical radios, without the assistance of radio relays, do not provide coverage over the needed 10's of kilometers of the battlefield. One alternative to provide beyond LOS communications is to use satellite technology. In the past, this was an expensive alternative for continuous communications, and ground terminals capable of supporting medium data rate (MDR) satellite communications (SATCOM) service on-the-move were not available. However, the competition in this market over the past few years has significantly decreased the cost of both the satellite equipment and satellite time. The MITRE Corporation is investigating the technology of SA TCOM on-the-move (SOTM) for the US Army Ground Mobile Forces. The focus of the project is to develop the capability using current Ku-band commercial satellites and eventually migrate to future DOD-owned Ka-band satellites that will support high bandwidth on demand type services (i.e., Wideband Gapfiller Satellite). The primary effort of the project is to develop a low-cost integrated terminal capable of providing MDR performance (256 kbps target). There are several technological hurdles to overcome in the design and building of a SOTM terminal designed for operation over commercial Ku-band satellites. This paper focuses on the modem performance in this system including the background analysis done, determining the need for a spread modem, the parameters required for the modem and the methodology and results of both lab testing and field testing of the modem. The performance of the modem was evaluated in an environment with noise, multipath, changing Doppler and frequent signal loss. Finally, the satellite channel was validated through signal and delay spread testing.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Efficiently mapping the logical layout of multiple VPNs over a service provider network is an important and challenging traffic engineering procedure. The use of sink-tree (multipoint-to-point) routing paths in a MPLS network makes the VPN design problem different from traditional design approaches where a full-mesh of point-to-point paths is often the choice. The clear benefits of using sink-tree paths are the reduction in the number of label switch paths and bandwidth saving due to larger granularities of bandwidth aggregation within the network. In this paper, the design of multiple VPNs over MPLS, using sink-tree routing, is formulated as a mixed integer programming problem to simultaneously find VPNs logical topologies and their dimensions to carry multi-service, multi-hour VPNs traffic from various customers. Such a problem formulation yields an NP-hard complexity. Here, we propose a heuristic aiming to scale the VPN design problem by choosing a small-but-good candidate set of feasible sink-tree paths to solve the optimization problem over. Numerical results are given showing the advantages of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002.
