In this paper we describe the design and demonstration of a set of simple routing protocol mechanisms that substantially improve the transmission of real-time multimedia streams over a multihop wireless mobile ad hoc network. The public demonstration of these mechanisms at the final DARPA GloMo PI meeting showed smooth audio and clear video over the ad hoc network throughout the demonstration, despite frequent routing changes taking place as a car implementing one endpoint node moved continuously. We implemented our routing extensions in the dynamic source routing protocol (DSR) running over standard 2 Mbit/s Lucent WaveLAN-II radios; the two endpoint nodes ran standard Microsoft Windows NetMeeting, communicating entirely through normal IP packets over our 8-node DSR ad hoc network.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. This well-known behavior is the basis of signature analysis intrusion detection systems. This work presents a new attack signature model to be applied on network-based intrusion detection systems engines. The AISF (ACME! Intrusion Signature Format) model is built upon XML technology and works on intrusion signature handling and analysis, from storage to manipulation. Using this new model, the process of storing and analyzing information about intrusion signatures for further use by an IDS become a less difficult and standardized process.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. On the other hand, uncoded orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) is MUI-free by design, but faces challenges arising from the fading-induced loss of multipath diversity. We wed the advantages of CDMA with those of OFDMA. We design a group-orthogonal multi-carrier CDMA (GO-MC-CDMA) scheme that minimizes MUI subject to the constraint that the full multipath diversity is enabled for all users. Each group of GO-MC-CDMA users shares a properly selected set of system subcarriers. MUI only exists among users in the same small-size group, which renders the application of low-complexity multiuser detection per group practically feasible. Simulation results illustrate the merits of GO-MC-CDMA over competing multi-access alternatives.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. While the raison d'etre of SDR is somewhat different for military and commercial applications, they share similar challenges in implementing a true SDR. A true SDR faces numerous hardware and software challenges, many of them still to be addressed by research. In the literature concerning SDR software architecture and requirements, the technology requirements tend to be sidelined. This is mainly because, in the JTRS program, the focus is on voice and low data rate applications; also, the frequency band is limited to UHF. On the other hand, the implementation cost is less of a concern for now. However, by the emergence of advance warfare technology where it is required to transport more bits per warrior to accommodate video and telemetry data, and also by introducing initiatives similar to the JTRS to other communication systems, the technology requirements of SDR have to be revisited. The paper focuses on the hardware technology aspect of SDR. The main technical objective of SDR is a versatile reconfigurable platform, which provides interoperability. The main blocks of a true SDR are: intelligent antenna; programmable RF modules; high-performance digital-to-analog (DAC) and analog-to-digital converters (ADC); digital signal processing (DSP) techniques/technology; interconnection technology.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. We then studied the use of a rate 1/2 turbo code compared to a rate 1/2 convolutional code in the context of such a system. The downlink modulation used was DPSK. Channel interleaving was used to transform pair or burst errors caused by DPSK demodulation or fading respectively, into less correlated error events. This paper presents comparative simulation results for the end-to-end bit error rate performance of the two forward-error correction schemes when the uplink, downlink, or both links are affected by benign and by fading channels. In the fading cases, a unique metric transformation was used to improve the end-to-end BER performance.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Unlike wired access networks, fault tolerant wireless network design can be costly, and highly complicated due to unique characteristics of wireless mobile networks, such as user mobility, that can significantly worsen network performance after failures. We present a novel network design model that incorporates the effect of user mobility for fault-tolerant wireless access networks. The problem was formulated as an integer programming (IP) model to minimize the total network interconnect cost while user demands and survivability requirements are satisfied.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Mobility of the nodes in the network causes creation of new links or breaking of old links, changing network routes dynamically. These changes require a proactive routing protocol to regularly broadcast updates in the network to enable other nodes to maintain correct routing information. The performance of a proactive protocol depends on the particular strategy the protocol uses to broadcast these updates. The updating strategies used by the current proactive protocols to broadcast detected link changes in the network are found to be inefficient. We propose three new strategies for broadcasting proactive updates in the network. Analysis of these updating schemes using simulations shows that the proposed schemes lead to significant savings in the amount of routing control traffic generated in the network. At the same time, the performance of these schemes is satisfactory in terms of the data throughput, route success rate, etc. For example, for a moderately sized network, simulation results show that the proposed schemes can lead to more than 45% savings in terms of routing control traffic, while maintaining decent performance of the network.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. The task of stabilizing the antenna mount on a moving platform as well as the capability to operate on more than one frequency band presents multiple challenges to the terminal designer. A team of companies have joined together to design and produce the next generation in marine stabilized multiband satellite communications terminal. Austin Info systems, Inc. (AIS) teamed with Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN), Orbit CT&T Marine Division, and Ki Company to produce the 106M4S3 Satellite Terminal. The system consists of a 2.7-meter carbon fiber reflector system using the AIS patented multiband feed technology. The system provides continuous transmit and receive capability in C-band and Ku-band without the need for mechanical changeout of the feed assembly. The C-band is also provided with selectable circular or linear polarization. The system is supplied with dual band satellite electronics. The system uses X over Y pedestal technology to eliminate cable wrap. The system is capable of being provided in a single or dual terminal configuration. A complete monitor and control system is provided from below decks. Although originally designed for operation in C and Ku bands the system is capable of being expanded to provide coverage of other bands including X and Ka bands. This paper provides details of the design and operation of the system.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. We consider a suboptimal implementation of this prescription, with a view to hiding high volumes of data in images with low perceptual degradation. The three main findings are as follows. (i) Scalar quantization based data hiding schemes incur about 2 dB penalty from the optimal embedding strategy, which involves vector quantization of the host. (ii) In order to limit perceivable distortion while hiding large amounts of data, hiding schemes must use local perceptual criteria in addition to information-theoretic guidelines. (iii) Powerful erasure and error correcting codes provide a flexible framework that allows the data-hider freedom of choice of where to embed without requiring synchronization between encoder and decoder.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002.
