Propagation losses experienced by terrestrial jammers will be comparable to losses seen by the target radio links, with multipath fading, and power failing off faster than 1/r/sup 2/. An intelligent distributed jammer can partly overcome excess propagation loss by exploiting the proximity and small number of targets in each node's coverage region to extract information needed for frequency following or synchronized pulsed jamming. The coverage radius of an individual jammer node is an important system parameter, determining the number of nodes required. and the resulting jammer cost. A set of equations are presented that give the probability of jamming a target receiver randomly located inside a fixed range, when both communications and jamming signals suffer from Rayleigh fading. and average jammer power falls off faster than line-of-sight power. An upper bound on jammer performance improvement with intelligent jamming is found by assuming the nodes are able to extract desired target signal information. and calculating the improvement in jammer reliability with a fixed coverage range. Both frequency followers and synchronized pulsed jammers are examined. Performance improvement is greatest when each node's coverage region contains a limited number of distinct communications sub-networks.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. The initial prototype has been installed at USA Pacific Command and Army Signal Command. This system uses principles of thermodynamics to model network conversation characteristics. Observing the properties of entropy, energy and temperature within the system develops a notion of baseline operating conditions. Perturbations in these properties are considered potential intrusions for further investigation. System functions are decomposed into a network sensing device, a real-time processing component and a forensics component. State definitions for a variety of conditions are discussed. Finally, examples of valid intrusions and other network perturbations in real traffic collected in network operation center backbones are presented. Preliminary results indicate this system has significant potential for revealing anomalies in large network systems.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Communication among nodes is achieved through two distinct layers that are characterized by clustering of nodes and separation of communication channels. Nodes are grouped in a disjoint manner into clusters, each cluster consisting of one or more members. One node that is one hop away from the other members in the cluster is designated as a leader or clusterhead; it acts as a communication portal for members to reach out to other nodes within or outside their clusters. We propose a cluster assisted routing (CAR) protocol that reduces the copies of route discovery messages significantly by utilizing cluster information. One distinct channel is dedicated to inter-cluster communication and the other to intra-cluster communication. Communication overhead is balanced between these two channels since the clusterhead handles more packets while the number of clusterheads is much less than that of members. This model also improves the cost of path discovery and maintenance as well as expected data delivery time.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. The FCS/OF will operate as a cohesive, mobile, lethal, survivable, and sustainable land combat force capable of rapid deployment and immediate employment upon arrival and able to defeat threats in the 2010-2025 timeframe. This is to be achieved through network-centric operations wherein the force is realized through the network. In this paper we consider three echelons of the objective force, the FCS at the lowest level, above which resides the unit of action and the unit of employment. A communications network architecture study has been conducted to determine how the mobile nodes of the FCS/OF network may be best configured to realize this force. The study has examined a number of potential architectural topologies and the performance that can be expected from each. Trade studies were conducted to assess the relative merit of various technologies to the FCS/OF network on the basis of measures of performance such as capacity, connectivity, coverage, protection, and scalability. The result is a recommended communications architecture that will most readily achieve the goals of the FCS/OF. A flat architecture at the lowest echelons exploits mobile ad hoc networking with directional antennas for terrestrial communications. Range extension is realized through relays of various forms including unmanned aerial vehicle and satellite communications. Unit of action communications are organized into subnetworks with relay to lower and higher echelons, as well as joint and coalition forces. The unit of employment network enables command and control on-the-move and reachback to continental USA and external forces.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. The emphasis is on the performance in terms of adjacent channel interference (ACI), bit error rate (BER), coding gain over conventional waveforms, and the ability of the radio to acquire these waveforms while being subjected to a Doppler frequency of /spl plusmn/1200 Hz. This paper first introduces the mathematical representation of the dual-h quaternary CPM waveform. Then the principle of the data demodulation including carrier and symbol timing acquisition and tracking using the MIL-STD-188-181B-specified preamble is illustrated. Finally, with the use of computer simulations, the spectral envelope and bandwidth efficiency of these efficient waveforms are compared to conventional counterparts.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. However, the reachability of Bluetooth networks is limited by the weak error control coding used by the predefined packets. We propose a method for improving the performance of Bluetooth by using custom error control coding in general, and turbo codes in particular. An important aspect of the proposed technique is that it is compliant with the Bluetooth standard, and therefore requires no hardware modifications. More specifically, the AUX1 user-defined packet is used to transport rate compatible punctured turbo codes (RCPT). The result, as shown by a combination of analytical/simulation results, is a dramatic increase in throughput and decrease in latency at low signal to noise ratios.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. The image compression scheme is based on a phase dispersion technique originally developed for the design of pulse compression radar waveforms. The technique forms the basis for a lossless, invertible transform that converts sub-band coefficients to an intermediate domain. This image compression scheme generates significance map bits, which must be transferred across the HF link error free (hard bits) as well as magnitude vectors, which can sustain some degree of received errors (soft bits). The paper gives a brief overview of the image compression scheme followed by a discussion of three transmission schemes. The first transmission scheme investigated is the forward transmission HF modem. In this technique an HF modem is utilized set at an appropriate on-air data rate for the current HF channel conditions. This is a one way broadcast technique with no feedback from the destination. The second transmission scheme investigated is an automatic repeat request (ARQ) technique. This technique utilizes requests from the destination to resend data packets received in error and guarantees error free transmission of the image data. The third transmission scheme examined is a hybrid scheme, which couples an ARQ technique for the error free delivery of the hard bits with a forward transmission HF modem to provide good protection for the soft bits.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Previously studied methods including differential detection, limiter discriminator (LD) with maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD), and LD with multiple symbol correlation incorporating Viterbi algorithm (VA) based receivers are reviewed. These previously studied methods offer performance within approximately 3 dB of the coherent detection of US DoD-RCC-IRIG 106/00 and international CCSDS standardized Feher (see US Patents: 4,567,602; 4,644,565; 5,491,457; 5,784,402; 6,198,777, International Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) No: PCT US99/17995; International Patent No. WO 00/10272, February 2000) quadrature phase shift keying (FQPSK). virtual diversity, comparator-counter, and other architectures are introduced as other alternatives for robust operation and fast synchronization in a frequency selective environment. Virtual diversity employs several \"free-running\" and offset carriers placed in distinct receiver paths. Each signal is evaluated in its BER performance with selection of the path with the best performance. This architecture has the potential of better BER performance for high bit rate applications. The comparator-counter method utilizes a comparator to detect zero crossings and counters placed in quadrature paths to detect the number of zero crossings. The information obtained from these counters is then evaluated to determine the transmitted bit. This method potentially offers simplicity with a relative ease of implementation. Areas for comparison of all of the above mentioned methods include overall BER performance, simplicity with ease of implementation, and robust operation.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Radios procured in the future must conform to the requirements under the JTRS. These requirements include open architecture, software programmability, use of commercial-off-the-shelf technology, and the ability to transmit or receive at any frequency between 2 MHz and 2.5 GHz. Line of sight communications such as ship-to-ship, ship-to-plane, or ship-to-shore, usually occur in the 30 to 400 MHz frequency range. The wide scale deployment of a JTRS compliant radio is one factor in the need for an advanced RF distribution system. Reducing the number of antennas while increasing communications capabilities presents significant new challenges in the area of electromagnetic interference (EMI). The requirement to reduce EMI is probably the most significant factor in the need for an advanced RF distribution system. One approach to reducing the EMI is an interference mitigation system that taps off some of the transmitted signal, changes its phase by a known amount, and adds it to that at the receive antenna. An advanced RF distribution system is needed to accommodate JTRS compliant systems on US Navy ships. At a minimum the distribution system should accommodate the spectrum of line of sight communications for the JTRS. This is a significant challenge in the area of communications for the US Navy, in the twenty-first century.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. As the number of groups increases at the cost of system complexity, eventually becoming a FHMA system, the worst case performance of FH-FDMA with the clipper receiver is gradually improved, while that of the NED receiver is hardly improved when SJR is less than 10 dB. Although the clipper receiver has a practical disadvantage because the clipping level depends on measurements of the signal output energy, the FHMA system with the clipper receiver can be an effective solution among the FH-FDMA systems in the presence of worst case band MTJ if a clipping level can be feasibly set.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002.
