This paper provides an outline for an alternate method of demodulation. The pulse count demodulation scheme is typically used as a method for demodulation of FM voice signals. The pulse count demodulator does not require fast A/D converters or automatic gain control anywhere in the receive path of the radio. Thus, the receive radio architecture can be designed without these components, decreasing the power requirements and size of the RF portion of the receiver. This paper investigates the performance characteristics of the CPM signal as demodulated through the pulse count demodulator. Some analysis is performed on the extent of the limitations in amplitude and phase accuracy and resolution. The design of the PCD is discussed and this paper provides the simulated results that represent the ultimate performance of the CPM waveform as demodulated through the pulse count demodulator.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Each packet transmission includes an acquisition preamble, and the preamble sequence is changed at the boundaries of predefined time epochs based on a pseudorandom sequence generator. The acquisition algorithm considered in this paper exploits knowledge of the preamble sequence employed during each time epoch to adaptively choose the acquisition threshold. The performance of the adaptive-threshold acquisition algorithm is evaluated and compared with one previously considered in Noneaker et al. (2001) in which the threshold is fixed. It is shown that the adaptive-threshold algorithm results in good average performance, even with a large a priori uncertainty in the signal-to-noise ratio. It is also shown that the average performance with the adaptive threshold is superior to that obtained with the fixed-threshold algorithm of Noneaker.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. Ray-tracing or FDTD methods do not provide insights into the relationship between reflector configurations and the performance of long-range prediction. Therefore, we present a novel model that: (1) creates non-stationary datasets to test our previously proposed adaptive long range prediction algorithm, which enables practical realization of adaptive transmission techniques; (2) classifies the reflector geometries that have typical or most severe parameter variations, so that the reflector configurations for test datasets can be appropriately chosen; (3) provides limits on the speed of adaptation needed for an algorithm to predict the channel significantly into the future, and thereby reveal the timing of future deep fades, etc.; (4) illuminates the origins of the temporal and statistical properties of measured data. The algorithm performs similarly on channels given by the physical model or actual measured data, but differently on a channel simulated by the stationary Jakes model. The insights of the model accurately describe the performance of the algorithm in several scattering environments when prediction is employed with adaptive power control and adaptive modulation. Moreover, we study limits of the long-range prediction at frequencies other than the observed frequency, of importance in correlated uplink and downlink transmission, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and frequency-hopping systems.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. For ionospheric scintillation fading we construct a channel impulse response function using a mutual coherence function. For terrestrial multipath we use a channel impulse response function based on a tapped-delay line model. We solve the combined model numerically using the Naval Research Laboratory Impulse Response Function Simulator code (NCIRFS) for several modulation waveforms for both frequency selective and frequency nonselective fading conditions. We compute the delay spread for a simulated ground terminal in an urban and maritime fading environment. For an urban or maritime scintillation environment we find that the delay spread is a multiplicative combination of both multipath and ionospheric scintillation fading and can extend over several modulation periods. We present results for several waveforms and for combinations of fading and multipath environments.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. However, most of the researches concentrate on adopting the integrated service (IntServ) or differentiated service (DiffServ) over the tunneling section between the home agent and the foreign agent. Also, most researches seem to neglect admission control considering handoff and the QoS architecture. In the big picture for QoS, the end-to-end QoS can be guaranteed by combining, intra-domain QoS and inter-domain QoS. So, if it is possible to guarantee intra-domain QoS, inter-domain QoS can be guaranteed by negotiation between domains. We present the intra-domain QoS guarantee mechanism, which can support host mobility. We redefine intra-domain QoS as an interoperation of micro-level QoS and macro-level QoS, considering protocols that support host mobility and currently discussed in IETF Mobile IP WG. For the microlevel QoS, several admission control mechanisms may limit the handoff dropping and cell overload probability in wireless network. But, it is not enough. Whenever the mobile host moves between different subnet, it may be blocked if available bandwidth is not reserved between gateway home agent and current gateway foreign agent. So, new admission control considering mobility in the macro-level QoS has to be developed. In our proposal, bandwidth broker (BB) in DiffServ network performs the admission control based on the available bandwidth between the gateway home agent and the current gateway foreign agent in addition to neighboring gateway foreign agents, where the mobile host may possibly visit during the lifetime of the connection.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. When the CP length is smaller than the channel order, a time domain equalizer (TEQ) can be used to shorten the channel impulse response. For full-duplex DMT systems with overlapped upstream band and downstream band, an echo canceller is needed to separate the signals transmitted in opposite directions. The complexity of the echo canceller is proportional to the length of the echo impulse response. This paper proposes a new algorithm for these full-duplex DMT systems that is able to reduce the effective channel and echo impulse responses using a single TEQ filter. Computer simulations show that the proposed algorithm has better throughput performance for the channel path and better generalized signal-to-interference ratio for the echo path than some existing algorithm.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. This demonstrates significant improvement in performance over chaotic synchronisation based approaches. The technique also solves problems of phase slips and advances (which cause symbol deletions and insertions). Methods to reduce the complexity of the solution, without significant loss of performance, are described. The paper discusses the communication method from an information theoretic viewpoint, which demonstrates that the method has an inherent coding mechanism, which requires little excess bandwidth to achieve effective coding gain.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002. The goal is to maximize the average throughput of the system. We present a numerical analysis based on a basic queueing model and compare the proposed techniques with the existing DCA scheme. The SCA assigns and fixes a partial set of OVSF codes in the binary code tree so that the average throughput is maximized for randomly arriving call requests. The configuration of the best partial set of OVSF codes depends on the ratios of the mixed call arrival rates. When the system becomes heavily loaded, SCA begins to outperform DCA in terms of average throughput. Another advantage of the static assignment is that it does not require any complex reassignments of codes to support a newly-arriving call. The EDCA resorts to a stationary dynamic call admission policy that accepts or rejects a newly arriving call on the basis of the state in the Markov decision process modeling call arrivals and departures. EDCA allows code reassignment to maximize the spectral efficiency. We derive an optimal EDCA policy through linear programming to solve for the optimal policy of the Markov decision process. Comparing DCA and EDCA, it is indicated that the greedy policy of DCA may not be optimal in terms of the long-term average rate of the total data served. Simulation and numerical evaluation confirms that EDCA performs better than DCA as the traffic load increases and high-rate calls become dominant.","PeriodicalId":191931,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2002.
