Particularly, in developing economies, the demand for energy is high in various sectors including residential, agricultural, industrial, medical and economy. The energy for these sectors comes from conventional (e.g. fossil fuels) and non-conventional (e.g. wind, solar, biomass, biofuels) sources. The production of petroleum-based products, i.e. the main conventional resource, was increased by 2.2 million b/d (barrels per day), while the natural gas consumption grew by 195 billion cubic meters. Thus, the annual growth in the consumption of conventional sources of energy favors their exhaustion in the near future. Besides, their extensive consumption causes severe environmental pollutions that risks the health of human as well as other beings. Therefore, we must switch from the consumption of polluting-conventional resources to green and renewable ones. In this regard, the production of biodiesel/biofuels, which are produced from the green and environmentally friendly resources, like vegetable and animal oils, have attracted the attention of various sectors. Among these, the utilization of vegetable oils as feedstock for the production of biodiesels is found to be more effective, owing to their availability, diversity, and their versatile properties. According to Statista, the annual production of various vegetable oils was ~ 204 million metric tons (mmt) in 2018-19, which was higher than 2017-18 by ~ 6.7 mmt. The extensive production of these vegetable oils (VOs) has also facilitated their application in the production of functional materials and compounds, which directly reduced the production cost and consumption of fossil-based products. During the past decades, our group has extensively utilized vegetable oils as active materials and synthetic medium for the synthesis and development of functional polymers, paints, nanomaterials, hydrogels, artificial tissues, etc. that confirms the diversity and applicability of VOs as promising alternates. This suggest “that everything made from fossil fuels (materials) today can be made from a tree (sustainable resource) tomorrow”.","PeriodicalId":18897,"journal":{"name":"Natural products chemistry & research","volume":"12 1","pages":"9-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79426332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result of the potential for new drug discovery, scientists from different disciplines, such as organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, pharmacology, biology and ecology have become interested in marine natural products. This interest has led to the discovery of almost 8,500 marine natural products to date and many of the compounds have shown very promising biological activity. The ocean is considered to be a great source of potential drugs. The chemical compounds, which are isolated from marine sources usually consists of nitrogen containing heterocyclic rings. Several sydnone derivatives show a broad range of physiological activities, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties. Hence, chemists have been enthusiastically pursuing the synthesis of such derivatives.","PeriodicalId":18897,"journal":{"name":"Natural products chemistry & research","volume":"42 1","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78559279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Primitive people have trusted nature for food, shelter, clothing and medicine to cure ailments. These humans distinguished useful herbs with beneficial effects from people who were inactive or toxic. According to literature approximately 50,000 plant species are stated to possess medicinal properties. Thus, the basis of modern medicinal drugs such as aspirin, morphine, digitoxin and quinine were synthesized through scientific validation of herbal medicine. Plant based drugs awareness advanced gradually and has been passed on, therefore setting a foundation for several traditional medicine systems round the globe.","PeriodicalId":18897,"journal":{"name":"Natural products chemistry & research","volume":"410 1","pages":"1-2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76628870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite its abundance in the Peruvian coastline, little or no importance has been given to its study, especially in the extraction of its secondary metabolites. In this work, we screened Lessonia trabeculata extracts for cytotoxic activity against human breast cancer cells. Only hexane extract was observed to be active against these cells. Both the chloroform and methanol extract were inactive. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the L. trabeculata hexane extract resulted in the isolation and identification of fucosterolusing NMR spectroscopy. The IC50 measured for hexane extract from L. trabeculata was 129 μg/mL and 75 μM for fucosterol, compared to mithramycin, a positive control. This study on the secondary metabolites of the Peruvian seaweed L. trabeculata is the first of its kind. The data obtained represents an interesting doorway for further studies.","PeriodicalId":18897,"journal":{"name":"Natural products chemistry & research","volume":"7 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88295919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most parts of the plant have been used over the years for both medicinal and psychoactive purposes. This study was aimed at evaluating the sub-chronic toxicity of the seed extract of Datura metel on selected liver and kidney parameters and Packed Cell Volume (PCV). Twenty rats were used for the subchronic study and were grouped into 5 groups of 4 rats each. Control group was administered 0.5 ml of normal saline while the other groups were orally administered 300, 1600, 2900 and 5000 mg/kg body weight of extract for 28 days. There was significant (p<0.05) reduction in PCV in all test groups when compared to the control group. The groups administered 1600, 2900, 5000 mg/kg bodyweight showed significant (p<0.05) increase in sodium, chloride and potassium. There was significant (p<0.05) increase in serum total and conjugated bilirubin, and aspartate aminotransferase in groups administered 300 and 1600 mg/kg bodyweight while the groups administered 2900 and 5000 mg/kg bodyweight showed significant (p<0.05) reduction. The findings from this study have demonstrated that seed extract of D. metel might be deleterious to the red blood cells and may affect liver and kidney function.","PeriodicalId":18897,"journal":{"name":"Natural products chemistry & research","volume":"43 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81754450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The plant reportedly has wide range therapeutic effect for treating ailments and skin infections. In this study, dried and pulverized Datura metel leaves and flowers were both successively extracted using n-hexane and methanol, and then characterized. Methanolic leaf extract had the highest percentage recovery yield (23.5%). Chemical analysis of both sets of extracts revealed the presence of Alkaloids, Saponins, Tannins, Flavonoids, Phenols, Glycosides and Reducing sugars. The methanolic portions contained steroid compounds in the flowers but not in the leaves while Terpenoids were absent in the flowers but present in the leaves. FTIR manual peak results suggest that the leaf extracts contain more of the same bioactive compounds than the flowers. Animal treatments with methanol leaf extract initiated the fastest hair growth in 5 days, and the shaved areas were completely filled with hairs in 13 days. Hexane flower extracts produced the longest regrowth hairs (80.6%) after 30 days. The experiments clearly demonstrate that D. metel leaves and flower extracts, when mixed together in aliquots, can provide much improved hair growth formulations.","PeriodicalId":18897,"journal":{"name":"Natural products chemistry & research","volume":"131 1","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88986480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
