The WebQuests model, which has been used in educational practices since the nineties, employs these resources in inquiry-oriented lessons in classrooms. The literature emphasizes that WebQuests are more effective when exploring the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy (i.e., the capacity to create, evaluate and analyze). However, studies also point out that many WebQuests do not properly explore learning at these levels. This paper proposes a method and prototype for the construction of WebQuests aiming to stimulate the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. This model is based on norm concept from Organizational Semiotics with the objective of proposing best practices to be considered during the WebQuest design. The article presents the evaluation of the model in an empirical study with three lessons performed with fifty-one primary (elementary) school students. The results reveal improved student performance in post lessons tests, as compared with randomly selected control groups. The paper ends with a discussion of the results, limitations, challenges and future research.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"451 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131774366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Middle Schoolers Out to Save the World (MSOSW) energy monitoring activities acquired stronger beliefs about the existence of climate change and generally became more positive in their intentions to take action to slow the pace of climate change. Findings regarding beliefs were replicated at all four sites (p <; .05), while two of the four sites also had significant (p <; .05) gains in their intentions. The purpose of the MSOSW project is to direct middle school students' enthusiasm for hands-on activities toward long-term interest in STEM while guiding them to solve real-world problems. These findings provide credible evidence that project activities can foster positive outcomes in a wide variety of climate zones and school environments.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134270995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PLATE-PBL is a Moodle plug-in based entirely on the meta-model of the PBL scripting language. The plug-in dynamically transforms lesson plans developed by a special visual script editor, it then interprets and instantiates equivalent lesson plans in the Moodle's runtime. Lesson plans can also be designed from within the Moodle plug-in using the same meta-model of the PBL scripting language. This is due in part to the use of Model Driven Architecture (MDA) paradigm in the development process.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"27 16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116764046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, analyzing educational designs and evaluating the level of tool-supported guidance provided towards reflective remedying actions is not a trivial task, especially for novice STEM teachers. In this context, the paper presents the design and preliminary evaluation of an inquiry-based STEM Teaching Analytics Tool. This tool aims to visually analyze and evaluate existing educational designs in terms of the level of technology-supported guidance they offer and support teachers' reflective (re) design. The preliminary evaluation results attest to the high levels of accuracy of the proposed Teaching Analytics Tool and provide evidence of its capacity to inform future Teaching and Learning Analytics tools for facilitating STEM teachers to engage in data-driven reflective (re) design of their practice.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129954178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, scaffolding is crucial as transfer of learning does not occur naturally and teaching-learning strategies found to be effective for experts may not be adopted similarly for novice learners. We hypothesize that if we can help students to model in relation to the ecosystem, they should be able to identify or discover opportunities, strategically assess technologies and create new innovations and interactions for e-commerce Websites. For goal-based scaffolding, we use technology-assisted design thinking, embedded formative assessments. We study more effective ways to develop: a) skills useful to the design and development of sustainable Web systems and services and possibly sustainable smart services in the future by relating business to technology and impacts on society, b) epistemic agency for lifelong learning.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127860019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Design of vCLOT combines the immersivity of virtual worlds with the power of knowledge structures. Immersivity provides learners with the opportunity to make decisions at every level of the game. This transfers control of interaction to the learner, enabling the learner to be actively engaged in knowledge construction process. Knowledge structures are a neat way to represent domain and learner data. The user interface of vCLOT is designed and implemented with Open Wonderland which is an open-source 3D toolkit. The learning goal which is to learn about blood clotting process, is aligned with the game goal, which is application of blood clot process steps to heal an injury. The game goal is presented as a quest in which the learner interacts with concepts by either dragging them or synthesizing them from other concepts. Learners complete the quest on successful formation of blood clot which in turn implies that they have learnt the blood clot process. We plan to do a usability study to improve the system before starting actual intervention.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121245394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By identifying the hot video segments (via video seek event counts) and weighting the keywords of hot video segments, we are able to establish the \"keywords cloud\" of each learning topic. This feature is valuable for learners to quick identify the most important or difficult concepts of each topic. Inspired by the idea of Better Life with Wisdom Creation, the authors designed a project & problem-based learning initiative, Smart Cup, to explore the application of Maker concept in education. The paper illustrates how learners' design, programming and 3D modeling skills are acquired and enhanced through the process of making a Smart Cup, with its features demonstrated and actualized with 3D printing. A project-based learning model is also proposed in the paper as a reference for other Maker Education initiatives and practitioners. Our initiative indicates that learners' ability to innovate and integrate multi-skills is essential to practicing Maker Education.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132074091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Learners utilize tablet computers to record sounds and images to complete their dramas as the means of increasing their motivation in learning. We name such freeze-frame comic dramas on tablets as the Video Comic Drama. In order to enhance students' participation in class, we suggest to perform dramas in groups. We ask instructors to do heterogeneous grouping based on students' learning situations. Students follow the instruction given by the system to complete their own four-cell comics in groups. We have observed that in group activities, group members would create social interdependence within their groups because students had mutual goals to achieve, which helped increase the opportunities for peer discussion. Both overachievers and underachievers have become more engaged in the activities. Moreover, the teacher may soon realize the learning situation of each student with a tablet, and conduct the group work demonstration in class. The demonstration enables students to learn from peers and to do reflexive thinking on their own dramas. The Video Comic Drama has been applied in the fifth-grade English course in an elementary school for one and half years. Both the interviews with teachers and the analysis of questionnaires showed that the Video Comic Drama largely improved all students' learning motivation and participation.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"286 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130973754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
