The findings reveal that the suggested formats and methods were very well received by the participant teachers. Regarding the level of confidence of their competencies in using ICT in their classrooms they were diverse, but the average was mediocre. The findings also indicate small differences on the levels of this particular aspect on the basis of previous participation of the teachers in an online training course and strong correlations among the different competencies. These findings create the extra requirement to incorporate in the design of the blended training environment elements that will help the teachers feel more confident in that aspect, and especially empower those that have not participated in such a training course. The findings can be relevant and informative for the higher education authorities and teacher training institutions responsible for designing professional training schemes for ELT pre-and in-service teachers.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124124451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous work has analyzed APAs in CALL systems, but results were contradictory and inconclusive regarding to whether APAs help students perform better or not. Additionally, none of the studies we have found studied APAs in CALL systems lecturing about the English present perfect tense, which is considered one of the main issues Brazilian students face when learning English as a foreign language. This paper describes the design, implementation and analysis of an APA integrated to a CALL system to help Brazilian students of English as a foreign language learn the present perfect tense. Thirty-nine Brazilian undergraduate students were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups, to evaluate whether the addition of an APA with features like talking, moving and pointing helps students improve performance. Pretest and posttest results were evaluated using statistical tests, which showed a significant increase in performance of students who interacted with the agent, when compared to correspondent outcomes of students in the control group.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114314309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cognitive motivational affordances are factors that enhance the cognitive engagement with the learning task. The social motivational affordances are factors that promote social interactions among students. The paper review some of the empirical studies that are conducted in an educational setting to test the effectiveness of specific game design elements on certain psychological outcomes such as motivation, attitude and enjoyment or behavioral outcomes. Results indicated that different game elements can promote different cognitive and/or social motivational affordances depending on the aim of using the element and the context where it has been used. Understanding cognitive and social motivational affordances of gamification can help educators and instructional designers to design effective gamified online courses that can invoke both cognitive and social outcomes.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114431717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We developed a web-based learning environment to foster the competence of innovation, one of the essential competencies required for today's software development. The proposed system includes the modules of creative thinking skills and instructional scaffolds that have been known to promote creativity. In this study, we provided an open data that downloaded from local government, the data recorded many attributes of historic sites of Tainan city. Students were asked to propose and implement an innovative application based on the data. The three-part study investigated if: i) students of the experimental group (EG) significantly have better fluency than students of the control group (CG), ii) there is no significant difference in flexibility but the EG still has better flexibility than the CG, and iii) the EG significantly outperforms the CG in originality. Analysis of the divergent thinking phase demonstrated that the proposed system can help students generate creative ideas. However, they may not use their creative ideas to develop innovative software because of their limited coding ability or the feasibility of their ideas.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114743513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we introduce an interdisciplinary and collaborative research project that engages students in learning both science and technology by developing educational videos for science explanation. In this project, students from the Digital Media course are paired with students from the Introductory Physics I course. They work together to create videos with blended digital media, such as images, animations, audio, and videos, to explain physics concepts and phenomena. The strategies for successfully conducting such an interdisciplinary project are discussed in the paper. The assessment results demonstrate the effectiveness of this project in student learning regarding understanding physics concepts, understanding the importance of digital media, and using digital media technologies. Results also show that this interdisciplinary project enhances students' communication skills and help them to learn skills and knowledge in the other STEM field by working together.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123564600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to develop an online multimedia learning system, TEDQuiz, for English language learners to practice their listening skills. The system is comprised of an easy-to-use browser extension and a personalized online learning management platform. This can help learners to manage listening materials by automatically generating multiple - choice questions, synchronously connecting to friends in a social network website and personally managing their learning progress and word bank. The use of the system involves six steps: skimming, asking questions, listening, answering questions, linking and reviewing. Taking TED talks as an example, users can skim the website, have guiding questions, listen to talks, answer the questions, link to a social network website, and review their profile on the TEDQuiz website. The experimental results demonstrate that students with the TEDQuiz system spent more time on video watching. In the questionnaire, students had a positive view of the functions of the TEDQuiz system. They thought it is useful and helpful, and they were willing to use it in the future. We also found that the usefulness factor was statistically significant in predicting the future usage of TEDQuiz.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131045848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several techniques such as mathematics pedagogy and game design lenses [12] were studied in the development of this investigative process. Game design lenses are tools developed for examining game designs. The game design lenses were analyzed and mapped to several mathematics-specific teaching and learning theories. The authors present a mapping of the lenses to the learning theories and the resultant process investigates and incorporates suitable theories into a mathematics game design. This paper presents a process for incorporating necessary teaching and learning theories into mathematics learning games.","PeriodicalId":188900,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 16th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127837179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
