The main challenges of mmWave communications are deafness (misalignment between the beams of the transmitter and receiver) and blockage (severe attenuation due to obstacles). Due to deafness, prior to link establishment between a client and its access point, a time consuming alignment/beam training procedure is necessary, whose complexity depends on the operating beamwidth. Addressing blockage may require a reassociation to non-blocked access points, which in turn imposes additional alignment overhead. This paper introduces a unifying framework to maximize network throughput considering both deafness and blockage. A distributed auction-based solution is proposed, where the clients and access points act asynchronously to achieve optimal association along with the optimal operating beamwidth. It is shown that the proposed algorithm provably converges to a solution that maximizes the aggregate network utility within a desired bound. Convergence time and performance bounds are derived in closed-forms. Numerical results confirm superior throughput performance of the proposed solution compared to existing approaches, and highlight the existence of a tradeoff between alignment overhead and achievable throughput that affects the optimal association.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116926028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, there is a non-negligible energy toll called cross-factor that encompasses the energy drained while a frame crosses the network stack of an OS. This paper addresses the challenge of deepen into the roots of the cross-factor, deseed its components and analyse its causes. Energy issues are critical for IoT devices. Thus, this paper conceives and validates a new comprehensive framework that enables us to measure a wide range of wireless devices, as well as multiple devices synchronously. We also present a rigorous methodology to perform whole-device energy measurements in laptops, a more generic and suitable device to perform energy debugging. Finally, and using this framework, we provide a collection of measurements and insights that deepens our understanding of the cross-factor.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134549137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The DHSSR is a mechatronic display of virtual curves intersecting 3D virtual objects, and aims at allowing designers to evaluate the quality of shapes during the conceptual design phase of new products. The DHSSR consists of a 6DOF servo-actuated developable metallic strip, which reproduces cross-sectional curves of 3D virtual objects. Virtual curves can be interactively generated on the 3D surface of the virtual object, and coherently the DHSSR haptic interface renders them. An intuitive and natural modality for interacting with the 3D virtual objects and 3D curves is offered to users, who are mainly industrial designers. This consists of an immersive virtual reality system for the visualization of the 3D virtual models and a hand gestural interaction approach used by the user for handling the models. The system has been implemented by using low cost and open technologies, and combines a software engine for interactive 3D content generation (Unity 3D), the Oculus Rift Head Mounted Display for 3D stereo visualization, a motion capture sensor (LeapMotion) for tracking the user's hands, and the Arduino Leonardo board for controlling the components. Results reported in the paper are positive for what concerns the quality of the rendering of the surface, and of the interaction modality proposed.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115416615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is an emerging technique which allows to monitor Earths surface parameters. Recently, this technique has been applied to soil moisture monitoring. In this paper, a prototype of a GNSS-based passive radar, able to exploit GNSS reflected signals from ground for soil moisture monitoring applications is presented. The prototype is able to handle signals coming from three antennas: one up-looking Right-Hand (RH) Circular Polarized antenna, for the direct signal from satellite, and two down-looking antennas, one RH and the other Left-Hand (LH) Circular Polarized, to measure the signals coming after reflection from ground. It is made of low-cost hardware and it is small and lightweight in order to be mounted on board an aircraft or a UAV. It basically serves as data grabber: the collected data are stored to memory for off-line processing. The design and development of the prototype is illustrated and early results of an in-field test campaign are also presented.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127206738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
