In this paper a simulation approach based on Matlab Simulink considering road and vehicle dynamics it is applied to the simulation of an Urban Bus. The objective of the control strategy implemented is the subdivision of energy sources to guarantee propulsion and operation of vehicle's auxiliary systems. We realized the control using if-then rules considering the dynamic of every single component of the vehicle. The attention is then mainly focused on the driving cycles analysis in order to evaluate in an efficient way the performance of the vehicle during an actual mission profile.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125203681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Computational effort reduction is one of the main targets for the network equivalent representation, even if results reliability remains a key point to be verified. In this paper an improved model is proposed, based on the most commonly used composite load models. Its main property is the generalization ability: the equivalent model can be applied to networks in various configurations, e.g. with different power absorption or different share of load types. A measurement-based procedure for load modeling is presented and discussed with simulations. Thanks to the combination of two optimization algorithms, namely the genetic algorithm and the grey-box approach, the procedure reaches high accuracy levels with a huge variety of load representations.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115840805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using atomistic empirical tight-binding simulations we show that random alloy fluctuations lead to statistical spread of the momentum matrix elements and the emission energy, and that the two quantities are correlated for the ground state transitions. These fluctuations can be related to lateral fluctuations of the electronic states and quantum confined Stark effect. From simulations on statistical sets of random samples for different Indium concentrations, we extract mean “macroscopic” emission spectra. The behaviour of the ground state transition momentum matrix elements with Indium content is found to correlate well with experimentally extracted spontaneous recombination parameters. A systematic reduction of these matrix elements with respect to results obtained without considering alloy fluctuations suggests that standard simulation models based on homogeneous media may overestimate LED efficiency by roughly 10%. A qualitatively different behaviour between flat band QWs and QWs with strong quantum confined Stark effect is found and explained by the localization behaviour of electrons and holes.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131306162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Governments and other public sector bodies are making significant investments in the development of EVs and introducing various tax credits, incentives and subsidies. In addition, energy companies and other industries have set their sights on electric vehicles. In particular, EV development is being strongly fueled by consumer demand stemming from economic and environmental factors. The scope of this work is to present a representation of the spread of EVs in some European countries, in order to address an integration of green energy with recharge of EVs with particular attention for Italy. The States concerned are United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Norway, Italy. Each state has its policy for incentives, divided in assistance in purchasing and benefits in use. It was described policy incentives held in recent years and the results were reported suggesting to implement a policy of incentives, for purchase and use.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130692859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So far, Earth observation has been carried out only through satellite images, which are limited in resolution and suffer from important barriers such as cloud occlusion. Microdrone solutions, providing video streaming capabilities, are already available on the marketplace, but they are limited to altitudes of a few hundred feet. In contrast, UAVs equipped with high quality cameras can fly at altitudes of a few thousand feet and can fill the gap between satellite observations and ground sensors. Therefore, new needs for data processing arise, spanning from computer vision algorithms to sensor and mission management. This paper presents a solution for automatically detecting changes in images acquired at different times by patrolling UAVs flying over the same targets (but not necessarily along the same path or at the same altitude). Change detection in multi-temporal images is a prerequisite for land cover inspection, which, in turn, sets up the basis for detecting potentially dangerous or threatening situations.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127490168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we provide a solution based on smart entity views and on pre-defined analysis operators which exploit keywords available in the entity view together with similarity information to produce summary information about the view contents from both a thematic and analytics perspective. In particular, smart entity views can be analyzed according to the following exploratory paradigms: entity expansion, entity visualization, and entity analytics. The proposed approach is discussed by referring to a case study of twitter dataset related to the “Expo2015” event as target entity.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124435663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This element belongs to the Series-Elastic-Actuator (SEA) category, as it provides a mechanical stiffness in-series with the active motor, and provides measurement of the torque by means of its deflection. This allows presented exoskeletons to realize an intrinsically safe (as for the compliance) and controllable (both in position and torque) interaction with the user. The two cases respectively deal with upper-limb post-stroke rehabilitation and powered assistance for the lower-limbs. The former exoskeleton - namely NEUROExos - was used by therapists to record experimental torque-angle profiles from desired rehabilitative sessions on the subject's impaired limb, in order to assess quantitatively the current joint resistance and evaluate patient's progression. The latter exoskeleton - namely APO - allowed the implementation of a torque control for gait assistance. Both systems, despite being rather powerful and in close contact with the human body, embeds safety checks and features, which allow them to safely operate in physical contact with the user, without the risk to harm him/her.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121618416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two different solutions are presented: switched reluctance and brushless DC motor drives. The reliability issues and the requirements for the degraded operating modes of the flap application are illustrated. It was conceived to figure out how CAS work and what their weaknesses are, either in a design or in a retrofitting phase, from an energy conversion standpoint. It can be used to evaluate energy savings resulting from retrofitting works, before setting them in place, or to design a new compressed air system from scratches, hence the aim is not only educational, but it is functional to support facility managers. The original ModSCA frame is designed in Simulink in a modular way suitable for further developments, as the ones described in such a work. Special attention is focused on the following topics: (i) further development of the network layout, implementation of new modules (ii) to dynamically assess pressure drops in filters and (iii) to assess the energy role of mass losses. A new control scheme, based on Model Predictive Control (MPC), for variable speed compressors, has been included and some simulations are shown. Besides, an electrical equivalence of the CAS is introduced and its effectiveness shown, as a standalone simulation; this approach shows to be suitable to be embedded in ModSCA, in a further release. The improvements in the behavior of the simulator against real complex system make it keen to be used both by industry and academia.","PeriodicalId":187166,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Leveraging a better tomorrow (RTSI)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120962528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
