As graduates, we have been growing and developing over the years with the motivation to reach a day such as this one. We have dreamed that, after years of putting much effort and time into our studies, a door to a new world will be opened to us, so we shall be able to help people on their path to health using the knowledge and skills that we have acquired. Therefore, we are finally here today in front of the door and we are waiting to open it slowly before crossing over the threshold at doctors' surgeries, health centers, hospitals and clinics. Each one of us, in our own way, is following our dreams.

Little is known about the usefulness of LUS in different types of pneumonia. Therefore, we analyzed and compared the sensitivity of chest X-ray (CXR) and LUS in different etiological types of CAP in children. \u0000Methods: We performed a prospective study in 166 children with CAP, who were admitted to the hospital. The participants were stratified into bacterial (n=80), atypical bacterial (n=32) and viral (n=54) pneumonia subgroups, according to the laboratory and microbiological results. LUS and CXR were performed on all patients at admission. \u0000Results: Pneumonia was detected with LUS in 161 (97.0%) participants and with CXR in 137 (82.5%) participants (p<0.01). The sensitivity of LUS was calculated as 97.0% (95% CI, 93.1%–99.0%), and the sensitivity of CXR as 82.5% (95% CI, 75.9%– 88.0%), p<0.01. In patients with bacterial CAP, infiltrates were detected with LUS in 79 (98.7%) and with CXR in 67 (83.8%) of cases (p<0.01); in atypical bacterial CAP, with LUS in 30 (93.8%) and with CXR in 28 (87.5%) (p=0.69); and in patients with viral CAP with LUS in 52 (96.3%) and with CXR in 42 (77.8%) (p<0.01). \u0000Conclusion: We have determined that LUS is an excellent tool for diagnosing CAP in children. LUS is at least as sensitive as CXR in all types of CAP in children and will probably replace it as the investigation of choice in CAP.

Recently, less extensive procedures such as extracapsular dissection and before that partial parotidectomy were introduced. We analyzed the data of patients treated with either partial or superficial parotidectomyand compared recurrence rates and postoperative morbidity. Methods: WA retrospective analysis of all the patients with pleomorphic adenomas who were treated at the Department of Otolaryngology from 2002 to 2016 was performed. The patients’ data were analyzed for outcome measures: facial nerve deficit, margin status, Frey’s syndrome, tumor size, duration of surgery and tumor recurrence. Results: During this period, 186 patients with pleomorphic adenomas of the parotid gland underwent surgery, 177 of these for the first time. Nine patients were referred to us with recurrence from another institution. Among these 177 patients, 86 were treated by partial parotidectomy, 75 by superficial parotidectomy and 16 by total parotidectomy. Transient facial weakness and the duration of surgery differed significantly between the different types of operation. Frey’s syndrome and recurrence rate were not significantly different between the groups. Conclusions: Radical surgery could be achieved with limited removal of the parotid while the recurrence rate was the same between the groups.

Two subgroups were established (“before” and “after”). The rate of elective caesarean section before 39 weeks gestation, the rate of neonatal respiratory disorders, and admissions to the neonatal intensive care unit were compared between the subgroups. \u0000Results: A total of 1881 elective caesarean sections were performed from 37 weeks gestation (1.083 [57.6%] in the before sub–group and 798 [42.4%] in the after sub– group). In the after sub–group there was a 9.8% reduction of procedures performed before 39 weeks gestation. Of the newborns, 1.59% had various respiratory problems (2.3% and 1.00% in the before and after sub–groups, respectively; p = 0.08). Six of 30 (20.0%) newborns were transferred to the neonatal intensive unit (4/22 [18.2%] and 2/8 [25.0%] in the before and after sub–groups, respectively). \u0000Conclusion: The policy reduced the rate of elective caesarean sections before 39 weeks gestation and the rate of neonatal respiratory disorders, even though the incidence of these disorders was rather low, even before the new policy.

Urodynamic testing is essential for diagnosis, but a gap exists in the usefulness of simple assessments that do not provide sufficient data, and devices that provide the necessary data, but are used primarily in clinics and clinical trials. This study considered the existing methods of urodynamics testing and developed a device that was both effective and suitable for home use. \u0000Methods: A review of existing urodynamic methods led to development of a capacitive device. We created a device with sensor electrodes placed on the outside of a specimen container. The functionality of the electrodes and performance of the novel capacitive device were compared with that of a gravimetric device (Dorado KT, Laborie Medical Technologies, Mississauga, ON, Canada) used at the University Clinical Center, Maribor. \u0000Results: Measurements of fluid volume (p = 0.936), maximum (p = 0.327), and mean (p = 0.136) flow observed with the two devices were not significantly different. Graphical analysis of collected volumes and flow variation over time show a high degree of overlap. \u0000Conclusion: Compared with previously developed urodynamics testing devices, the capacitance method and the performance of this device represent an advance. The precision of the measurements needs improvement and did not fully address the recommendations of the International Continence Society, but he use of additional sensor electrodes is expected to improve performance. Extending the functionality as a standalone capacitive device for home use and upgrading with wireless access by mobile systems would allow for additional benefits beyond current voiding diaries.

Initial perfusion via the carotid and femoral arteries is followed by immersion in a cadaver storage basin in embalming solution for at least 4–6 months. After this, cadavers are stored in plastic bags in refrigerators and are used for months to years. \u0000Results: Since 2008, we have successfully embalmed 16 cadavers using Thiel's method. Due to the beneficial characteristics of this method, Thiel's embalmed cadavers have become an important part of our education and research. Despite initial technical difficulties, we managed to upgrade the method and assure better long–lasting preservation. \u0000Conclusions: Thiel embalmed cadavers resemble realistic living bodies and serve as an appropriate model for teaching and research.

Since it has been established that smoking impairs wound healing, we wanted to determine if smoking increases the incidence of themost common complications that follow the LLETZ procedure and how it affects their intensity and duration. \u0000Methods: We included 434 patients that underwent the LLETZ procedure between 1993 and 2015 in the Department of Gynecology and Perinatology, University Medical Centre Maribor. Patients were asked to assess the intensity and duration of abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding and vaginal discharge after the procedure, and to complete a questionnaire on a daily basis. Data obtained from the questionnaires were then analysed. \u0000Results: The study group consisted of 237 (54.6%) smokers and 197 (45.4%) non-smokers. After the LLETZ procedure, 237 (54.6%) patients noted the occurrence of vaginal discharge, 193 (44.5%) lower abdominal pain, and 181 (41.7%) vaginal bleeding. No significant difference was observed in terms of the incidence of the observed events when comparing smokers and non-smokers. The duration and intensity of vaginal discharge and pain were not significantly different between the two groups. Non-smokers experienced bleeding that was more severe than smokers. \u0000Conclusions: According to the results of our study, smoking did not increase the incidence of vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, and lower abdominal pain following the LLETZ procedure, nor did it crucially influence their duration and intensity.

It is the most common cause of cardiovascular diseases and is a major epidemiologic concern in modern society. The pathophysiology of atherosclerosis includes two main events: endothelial injury and vessel wall inflammation. Recent findings indicate that the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis involves dynamic changes in epigenetic modifications and gene expression in a cell type- and stage-specific manner. Epigenetics is the study of gene expression and involves phenotypical variations without genotypic changes. Three major epigenetic mechanisms participate in atherosclerosis: DNA methylation, posttranslational modifications of histones, and non-coding RNA molecules (long non-coding RNA molecules [lncRNAs] and microRNA molecules [miRNAs]). The field of epigenetics has opened up new diagnostic and therapeutic options. Arterial stiffness is increasingly recognized as a surrogate endpoint for cardiovascular disease. Pulse wave analysis (PWA) and pulse wave velocity (PWV), determined by applanation tonometry, provide essential information on central aortic stiffness. PWA and PWV are strongly correlated with atherosclerosis and can be used as a tool for assessing cardiovascular status and the risk of mortality and morbidity in patients with coronary disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, arterial hypertension, and kidney disease.
